Ok, BigDog has soldered my ide header on, just ordered my 10 gig ibm travelstar HD today.. want to get a few things straight before I try and throw everything together.

Going to install ME, so I assume that I will hook the laptop HD up to my desktop (with one of the converters) and copy the whole Windows ME disk over to the HD and make it bootable and install from there? Anything I'm missing? Also any tips from problems you've experienced in the past would help!

Sound drivers, having a hard time finding them, it seems that acer has changed things around on their website and none of the links work, could someone email me the drivers or put out a working link?

I am assuming installing touchscreen drivers as well as just about everything else is pretty straight forward?

Thanks in advance!

Yep Acer moved them around.
They should still be on BigDog's freedrive though.
Check my website for login info http://orchycam.hypermart.net
and follow the GWCP links.
good luck

It's all rather easy, you will want to get the vidio drivers, sound drivers, and the touch screen drivers. The install is really easy, much better than the iopener. One handy thing to have too is a USB CF reader/writer, Staples and Circuit City have the Sandisk USB reader for $29.95 and with the 32md CF it makes a easy way to transfer files back and forth from another computer to the GCT.

Got my travelstar HD, borrowed my friends 2.5 -> 3.5 converter and tried just about everything but my desktop still wouldn't recognize the drive. I suspected a bad drive from the start because of a noise inside the drive that sounded like a rattle. Friend said it was normal for the drives to have a little ratteling to them, but when I took it over to his house last night for him to have a look at it and see if he could get it working, he heard it and said that the noise it was making wasn't normal and that it was too much. Said it sounded like the platters inside were moving. Don't know if the drive had been bad from the factory, or maybe it got messed up in shipping. Oh well.. will be sending it back for a replacement this weekend. Hopefully second time a round things will work out.

When you hook the drive up to your desktop, you need to fdisk and format.. when you say making the drive bootable, is that taken care of in fdisk?

Yes on fdisk and format with /S option, With Fdisk you need to be sure that the drive partition is set active too, if you are loading it from a computer that already has a drive and the laptop drive is set as slave on the primary controller or master on the secondary controller then you can use Ranish Partition Manager to set the laptop's drive partition as active. Ranish is free from /www.ranish.com

I installed the video drivers off of the free drive account, and when I rebooted, the WindowsME logo would appear, then the screen would go black.. I could hear the hard drive spinning as I was moving the mouse around and clicking and pressing buttons, but the screen wasn't displaying anything. Later tonight I'll re-do everything again, but was wondering if anyone else had any similar experiences?

Press the F8 key (My AOL key) and select safe mode, see if the display works in safe mode. If it does then there may be a video drive problem. Try re-installing the video driver again.

Touchpad is up and running and fully operational! Well, for the most part.. Trying to format the CF that came with the touchpad so I can use it in my flash card reader, and the software that came with can't recognize the partition and format it. Are there any other programs out there I can use to format the CF? I've tried using fdisk, but fdisk doesn't see the CF, but windows does. Any suggestions?

If you are using the Sandisk CF USB reader, there should be a utility to initilize the CF, if not then try a PC running Windows ME as ME let me run fdisk on the CF with my Sandisk reader but Win 98 wouldn't.

Also, with windows ME you must boot with the CF in the reader, otherwise fdisk will not see it.
