Check out this page:

http://www.pcisig.com/developers/specification/availspecs.php3?t2=1#mini

I'm not a member so I cannot read the specs.

But, this page says that mini-PCI supports standard side-band signals for communications. I'm thinking that any Mini-PCI network card should be able to use the RJ-45 port on the back if the communication side-band signals support 10/100 ethernet.

Can anyone confirm this?

This would be great because Xircom, Action Tec, IBM, and 3COM all have mini PCI network cards which could be used by those of us that have the HPNA module.

Dell, Gateway, IBM and others sell systems with these mini PCI cards. Does anyone have a laptop with one that they could try out in their GCT to confirm this?

Many of the Mini-PCI ethernet cards also have 56k modems which would allow removal of the built in modem to make room for a hard drive.

Thanks,
--matt

It would be GREAT if these mini-pci cards work.

Here's the product specs for each one:

  • Actiontec
  • 3com
  • Xircom

If not, I have an HPNA adapter that I'd like to trade for an Ethernet adapter.
In the meantime, I'm using a Linksys USB ethernet adapter.
Only problem seems to be getting the GCT to go into standby mode (WinME).

It looks like any Mini PCI card spec. should work in the GTC, since the original ethernet card is also (I belive) an actiontec. you should be able to just pop it in and thats it. Im still waiting for prices to drop a bit more before getting one.

I sold a GCT Ethernet adapter to a friend who put it in their IBM ThinkPad and it worked fine, including the integrated LAN connecter which we worried might require a dongle type cord like the HPNA adpater uses.

There are primarly two popular mini-pci adapters on the market, one uses a high density pin connecter and is used in rack mount chassises for imbedded OS's and telecommunications. Then there are the single blade small ones that are used in notebooks, this second type should work in the GCT's slot but the main problem is the attachment to it card such as wireless antennas and RG45 lan connecters. The GCT supports the integrated LAN connecter but I am not cure about the RG11 phone which on the GCT has an external cable connecter to attach it to the phone line plug with the HPNA adapter.

Someone help me out on the naming convention here, I seem to recall that the notebook mini-pci is refered to as mini-pci type III anyone want to correct me??

    Hi people!!

I've just got my first GCTP and I'm so excited!! This thing rules!. (and I'haven't even opened it . If I could only update the "Instant AOL"'s Gecko to the latest milestone release... (0.9.5 released yesterday) instead of the october-2000 release instant aol includes...

But back to this thread... I've looked at the ethernet card in a photo on another site and I could gather the following Actiontec part#:

    50-6048-2A

However, I've emailed sales@actiontec.com and support@actiontec.com asking about this part# and never got a reply.

Anyone wants to try bugging them?

    Regards
    Willy

    The ones on Ebay:

ACTIONTEC MINI PCI MODEM+LAN COMBO SL2150

Are not the same card that Gateway had in the GCT. I tried one of them with the unhacked AOL SW and it did not recognize it. It's not the same part number as mentioned in this thread.
