Cut pin on IDE header

Here's a good one!!

I bought a GCT off ebay from LiguidateIT (great deal!) Got it in and pulled the cover... and saw the IDE header factory soldered on!! I thought O-BOY! GREAT !

So anyhow, I got busy and had to set it aside for a week or so, I get around to hooking a drive up tonight and I have fought the thing for two hours trying to get it to work with no luck! Well I made two cables, tried a different drive, then put everything in another GCT and it worked fine! I glanced at the header, and what I thought at first was just pin 22 missing for proper alignment I realized was pin 25!! They cut a pin off the header to disable the IDE! (Can you say i-Opnener??).

Now I trying to decide if I should just remove the header and solder a new one on or solder just the one cut pin. The factory solder job is clean, I am a little fearful of messing up the pads removing the old cut header, anyone got any advice on this situation??

What I would do is...
You have steady hands? Manditory! (No caffine!)
Very Hot exacto knife,Glove! Carefully cut away the plastic supporting the ONE cut IDE header.
Desolder the damaged pin and replace with same from another header.
Fill in the cut away area around the new header with one small drop of epoxy for support.
Dremel tool with very fine bit may work too for plastic removal.

ESD precautions!

One ooops and you may be out of luck...if Mobo PCB trace(s) gets damaged...

You might try getting a pin and putting it into the IDE connector at pin 25 and seeing if the force from the connection will keep everything in place. If there's a stub of the pin left on the board I'd remove it first.

So you're only good at soldering them on? Just kidding, but 02U2 has the right approach with the single pin replacement method. Hot X-Acto knife may work, but the plastic is probably a high-temp or glass filled material to allow it to take the original solder reflow oven process temperatures of about 220C. Also, shoving an X-Acto knife around where you can't see may do serious trace damage under the header. Myself, I would take a small ball end bit (width of pin or slightly smaller) in the Dremel and just cut a slot in the edge of the plastic up to the cut piece of pin. Grasp the top of the cut pin gently with good tweezers and simultaneously heat the leg of the pin on the pad, you should be able to then remove it from the board. Clean the pad with a little solder wick and your iron. Take one pin from one of your multitude <g> of extra headers, slide it into the slot and resolder to the pad. If your're worried about alignment, place the pin into a ribbon connector in the proper location, then slide the connector over the existing header on the board to line the new pin up properly to the pad. If you do that, be careful about too much heat/time soldering the new pin otherwise in might also solder itself into the ribbon connector contact plating. Good luck, let me know if you need any clarification....

Almost forgot, fill in the slot you cut after replacement with epoxy for physical support, a little dab'll do ya....
