Anybody tried IBM Microdrive in the compact flash socket?
Anybody tried IBM Microdrive in the compact flash socket?

Has anybody tried using one of the IBM Microdrives (170MB, 340MB, 1GB) in the compact flash socket? They should work but from a previous post it sounded like somebody may have had trouble.

Thanks!

Silicon-

Perhaps you can help me out. I finally got my microdrive for the GCT (off ebay for around 120) and I am having trouble installing win98lite. I tried to install the chubby version and when the setup goes into
"Setup is now going to perform a routine check on your system"

The system just hangs when I press enter. I have had it sitting for like a hour and get no response. Did this take a while for you?

This is very frustrating b/c I waited to get this darn microdrive and now I can't get it to work.

Thanks ahead of time,
Scyber

Hi,
Ok, maybe you all can help me out... I have a 256MB CF (Kingston) which may be large enough to hold W98 Lite... however I am not sure where to obtain a copy or where the documentation is... could someone provide some background info on where you get it and a bit about how it works? Thanks

Scyber--

Good price on the MicroDrive, I am wishing I had waited on mine...

Well, here's what I noticed during my trials. It took me a day to get it done right, maybe I can save you some time. There is a key code to change the screen mode, something to do with a mode.com I believe. Sorry I can't remember exactly, it's on the board somewhere...if in this mode, the "routine check" will be visible as a ScanDisk if I remember correctly. If it's not visible, hit enter a few times and it'll skip the check. I had the same experience with leaving it sitting. I think it was locked some of the time, some time it wasn't. I had several attempts with "not enough disk space" errors...I had nothing but 98lite and the cabs on the MicroDrive in the end, it needs all of the space to work with it seems. I used Chubby mode with just about no options. I also used WinME, so that takes more space I guess. Anyway, try hitting enter a few times and see if you get to the next step.

Thanks for the tip. I managed to get to the win98 install screens. Unfortunately now I am getting an error saying that it could not extract all of the files it needs for the install. It says that either one of the cabs is corrupted or it does not have enough memory to extract it. I am pretty sure it is not the cabs, because I have checked and recopied them all and I still get the same problem.

Has anyone experienced this? Is their a way around this?

Anyone experience similar problems during win98 setup when using a microdrive and or CF?

I had thought it was the system carping out b/c of heat (I have it laying down on the floor, but I have it standing up and properly ventilated and I still get the same problem. For some reason win98 setup says that I have a corrupt cab file. Which is untrue, because I installed win98 from the same microdrive onto another computer.

thanx ahead of time.

No problems here with a 340MB unit.
