GCTs on Ebay

Does anybody know the story behind the GCTs that are going for under $100 on Ebay? Are these returns or QA rejects? I guess I'm wondering why they're going for less than cost after the product's been cancelled.

The descriptions say "customer returns, untested". On eBay that usually means they plugged them in and got nothing so they claim they haven't tested it, selling as-is. You could be buying a paperweight, or you could be buying something that was returned because the customer was unable to operate it.

Note however one of the locals is apparently selling one, and you may pay a little more but you'll end up with a better deal IMO.

these units work fine. however, they dont come with a power cord. mine came with an ide header already soldered on, and was the hpna version. i've bought two from this guy already.

i wrote to the guy seeing if he would want to set up a group buy but he hasn't responded in 3 days

my personal opinion is not to deal with any seller on ebay who doesn't answer his email (when i wwas offering him business!) in a timely manner...it's a prediction of things to come

I assume folks are talking about the "All-As-Is" as the eBay seller,

I polled 5 or so recent GCT buyers from that seller and they said the units worked but needed AC adapters. One very recent buyer said seller was uncommunicative and hadn't shipped yet. It appears that the guy is a fast seller. If you look at the I-Opener d-diving thread I get a lot of things I can't/don't want to test when I sell them on eBay so I can understand the seller's situation.

Seems like it's worth a try if you're brave. Link to seller's auctions below...

where would these GCT's be coming from where they would be missing the power brick?
and if some have the ide header on that would imply that someone attempted a hack and failed. unless Gateway shipped some with the header already onboard? I don't recall anyone reporting that theirs came with an IDE header already on.

These GCT's could be models that were returned to the manufacturer after the initial rollout. Its possible that the powerbrick was refurbished elsewhere from the main unit, and not returned along with it to the manufacturer or service area. Since they already have IDE headers they probably are 1st gen models. If these were all "hackers" models, I think there alot of unskilled hackers out on EBay.

I bought one from LiquidateIt, without a keyboard and PS. The Header was intact but on of the IDE pins were clipped, which when I hooked a cable to it, the drive didn't work. I took a razor and cut the header out were the pin was clipped, then took a pin off one of my spare headers that I use to soldering and soldered it on.

I would say the GCT's on ebay are surplus that Gateway is getting rid of since most the sellers on ebay that have them deal with surplus obsolete Gateway hardware. It's apparent that Gateway has all but discontinued the GCT (have your tried to finding reference to one on their web site?).

these are not gctp's used by hackers. these are first gen gctp's. when it boots, it shows the aol and gateway logo.
