Just like the title says, Can I use a 256 Meg RAM stick in my touchpad?

I put in a 256 meg stick from compgeeks.com, it works great.

Excuse my ignorance. Are you saying you put 256MB of RAM (DIMM/SIMM/whatever) into the GCT? We're not talking about CompactFlash correct? Presuming not, are we talking about standard 168pin sticks or something else?

I used a 144-pin SODIMM (laptop memory). The GCT's only got one slot for ram, so you have to pop out the ram that's already in there and replace it. After putting the 256Mb SODIMM in win98 reads 304 megs of ram (64 onboard - 16 code morphing + 256 SODIMM? I think that's right)

groovai--

One more stupid question. Are all SODIMMs the same physical size? I note the one in the GCT says SODIMM v1.0.

It also seems to be a PC100 and the one I think you got is a PC133 (I know that shouldn't matter).

Do you see better performance?

Any 144 pin SODIMM should be the right size (as far as I know).
I actually don't recall whether I ordered PC100 or PC133 ram, but because we can't change the bus speed on our GCTs they both have to run at the same speed, and would have identical performance because of it.

Ok. I got to the point where I need to ask for help.
I already tried 2 SODIMM 128MB sticks in my GCT and they didn't work.
The first one is a "Centon" brand bought at Circuit City.
The second one is "Infinion" bought at Best Buy.
In both cases the symptom is the same: I replace the GCT 32MB stick
by the new one and boot the GCT. Upon boot-up the GCT lights the LED,
but I cannot hear disk activity. Also, the screen remains blank. Even
the POST messages don't appear.
More data: When I tried the same sticks in my Laptop they worked fine.
Also, I tried a Kingston 64MB stick from my Laptop on the GCT, and it worked.
What I'm wondering is that maybe my GCT has a different memory controller in
its motherboard, that only accepts RAM up to 128MB (???). The different chip
may be possible because my GCT seems to be one of the early prototype units
from Gateway - It has access to the BIOS by pressing ESC at startup and prints
out a message like "NOT FOR RESALE" - I suppose it is not a production unit.
My question is for the hardware wizards out there: How can I find out what is
the hardware that controls memory in the motherboard? If I have some tips I was
wondering that I could find out if my chipset supports more than 128MB, but I
don't know: a) if this is really a function of the chipset; b) if this could be
some restriction at my BIOS;
So, I would appreciate any help or suggestion.
Thanks in advance.

If it's like the I-O, the NUMBER OF CHIPS on the SoDIMM is the determining factor.
The IO couldn't address above 16M per chip.

The 128 MB module with eight 16-M chips worked, the module with four 32-M chips DID NOT.
Some reports said the 4x32 showed up as only 64 Mb. Other reports said it wouldn't boot at all.
By analogy, you would want a 256 MB module with SIXTEEN 16-M chips. Never seen such a beast.

Of course, this I-O lore may not apply to GCT. I'd be delighted if that were true.

If you take the gamble, PLEASE report your results here.

Both sticks (centon and infinion) I tried were 16x8 and the GCT wasn't booting. The Kingston I tried was 16x4 and it booted OK. Any other suggestions or reports of successful (or unsuccessful) added memory are appreciated. If possible, please include how many chips are in the stick and where you bought it. Thanks again.

I bought a 128mb Centon memory from Circuit City and it worked, don't know on the 256mb, but you can always return it if it don't work.

There's a rebate on those 128mb Centon SODIMMS at Circuit City. Pay $19 at the register and get $15 back in rebates.

Enjoy,

Just bought a Centon 32x64 10ns 256mb sodimm at Circuit City and it works great, Windows XP shows 310mb memory which is different that what groovai mentioned that his showed 304mb under win98.

The memory has 8 chips on each side with a total of 16 chips, the model number (above the UPC barcode) is 256MBLT100, it was $79 with a $15 mail in rebate.

Windows XP is a faster, It shows about 202mb free working memory after disk caching. 128mb would most likly be just as good, but the memory was only $20 more more the 256mb versus the 128mb sodimm.

Just picked up another 128MB stick for my second GCTP from BestBuy. K-Byte brand, 128MB-PC100, 8 Samsung chips, for $19.99. Sku # 4142779, model # "128MBpcsodimm". Looks like an in-store deal, web shows it at $49.99

Works like a charm.
