IDE Cable Help Please
Make my own IDE Cable

Hello,

I am thinking of making my own IDE cable for the Gateway. Can I use the standard IDE cable with the Gateway? or do I have to modify the cable before I can use with the gateway? Please, direct me where to get the information. Thanks for all of your help.

You need a 2mm 44-pin ribbon cable and IDC header, the regular IDE 40-pin will not work and the cable needs to have every other line reversed which can be done by splitting and reversing everyother pair like I do on my cables or you can use the dual connecter end as shown on Badflash's site which uses two connecters side-by-side and you connect the header to the middle inside pair.

Check out the i-Opener Net-appliance section on http://www.badflash.com - Jack Rowlands can set you up with the cable you need or the parts to make your own.

I recently received my first GTC and am about to make the IDE cable. (I know, I can buy them just as inexpensive but this is a learning project!) my question is, the response above "done by splitting and reversing everyother pair", does this mean the pinout would be
1 - 1
2 - 2
3 - 4
4 - 3
5 - 5
6 - 6
7 - 8
8 - 7
and so on for all 44 pairs? If not can you post the correct pinout?

Thanks in advance!

Close, 1 goes to 2, 2 goes to 1

1 - 2
2 - 1
3 - 4
4 - 3
5 - 6
6 - 5
and so one...

When I make my cables, I use a razor blade to split every two lines of the ribbon cable making 22 pairs. Then I twist each pair once so that each pair is reversed (I use tape to hold each reversed pair in line as I twist the next pair and leave about an inch over lapping). Then I press the ribbon cable end on, The other end just has a normal end with no line reversed or any thing.

This method takes time and practice, the much easier method is to not split the ends but to put two connecters next to each other and install the cable on the middle of the four ends, here's a picture from BadFlash http://www.badflash.com/images/double.jpg This method is a lot easier and requires just a extra third header.

Once you get the 44 pin IDC header on the motherboard how do you get it to plug into a laptop HD. The HD has 47 pins on the back. Then the next question is what to mount it to. It seems like there is enough room between the IDC header and the heat sink, but what should I use to mount it?

Thanks,
-Drun

The HD has the proper 44 pin connection on the back - the other pins are the jumpers. Please ignore that part of my post above.

Any HD mounts available?

Thanks,
-Drun

There aren't any real mounts, there is basicly two different places to put a hard drive most use; one is in place of the modem by taking the modem out using a longer 12" cable with two twist in it, the other is insulating the area of the mainboard between the header and the CPU heatsink (electrical tape works) and using a small 3" cable twisted (the RF shield holds the drive in place with both mods).

Both ways work good, I have done both and use double sided tape to hold the drive in place. Also if you put the drive were the modem was, you will need to trim the RF shield and brace a little to prevent excessive pressure on the top of the drive since the drive can't handle must pressure on the top.

Thanks BigDog.

I ordered the headers and cables from badflash and tested the space for the HD as you said above. It fits and seems solid.

Thanks,
