I just got home and found a "Gateway Connected touch pad Welcome Kit!" in the mail. Its not much of a kit, its just a letter that says you need AOL. It has both Gateway and AOL logos on the letterhead. It doesn't look like they'll be trying to do any passing on of credit card info because it says on this sheet that you need to sign up using the touchpad if you aren't already an AOL subscriber. And on a side note, I think I read somewhere that the Crusoe 3200 chip doesn't have good support for 16-bit operating systems which would account for why it doesn't run 98 very well, but gets better in Me. I guess 98 still had a lot of 16-bit code in it. I'm actually thinking of using this for its intended purpose. I've been holding on to AOL because of the email adress and IM name, so this would be a good reason to continue keeping it. The only problem i see is that I only pay $9.99 a month because I have a cable modem and I'm on the "bring your own access" plan. I have a feeling that instant AOL won't have a setting to use TCP/IP to connect to AOL, but I guess I jsut have to wait and see.

Well I tinkered around with Instant Aol and there's really no configuring you can do...so you might have to go the HD way, unless someone manages to access the midori shell from instant AOL !

do you remember if there is a way to tell it to use the HPNA connection? since that connection exists it seems stupid that you wouldn't be able to use it...

Got my 'Welcome Kit' yesterday, with a postmark for $3.50!! to send a simple envelope with a single page enclosed. Guess this another reason they whack you so bad on the $60 shipping charge....

Yes. But it's a stiff, heavy duty cardstock envelope. They fooled me for a second. After the single sheet of paper came out, I thought there must be something else in there.

I guess it's good that they send this early so you know what to do with your machine when you get it. It does seem a little funny that it doesn't just come with the machine. I assume this means they come boxed/sealed from the factory (in Taiwan?) and Gateway does this so that they'll be able to change things "on the fly."

The fella at Gateway who handled my sale indicated 6 months of free AOL service was bundled with this purchase if you provided your own ISP... personally I don't think I'd mind 6 months free... well 5.5 months.. after that...

just got mine.
strange thing is that it gives a registration numbe and password under "New America Online Members".
What does that mean ?! Would it enable me to sign up on AOL ?
But then footnotes on the bottom on the page have a BLOCK letters "NEW AOL MEMBERS WILL BE CHARGED $21.95 PER MONTH"...Would that kick in if I use the information above or would I have to sign up separately?

Do you really want the reputation that goes along with being an AOL member?

And doesn't your IQ automaticly drop 10 points when you become AOL'er? :~)

I believe weird al said it best:

"Hey fella, I bet you're still livin' in your parents' cellar
Downloadin' pictures of Sarah Michelle Gellar
And postin' "Me too!" like some brain-dead AOL-er
I should do the world a favor and cap you like Old Yeller
You're just about as useless as jpegs to Helen Keller..."
