Sound Quality?

Playing around with my GCT earlier with my home stereo to check the quality....and it seems pretty bad. I did not take the time to set up the input on my reciever properly, but that should not have any effect on what I heard.

First there is a lot of cracking in the MP3s, like an old LP record (or bad tape) may have. (Sounds fine on other systems, I'm Hoping this is just lack of decode resources?)
Then the Freq Range seems pretty limited as well (No bass or mid-bass, highs were capped too).

I was running Win98 and WinAmp to test. I am hoping some of this will go away when I slim down Windows and it can devote more resources to WinAmp / Decode.

Anyone else seeing this problem? Are there any hacks to get a true Line Out, rather than the headphone output?

Any help, or suggestions appreciated!

Here is my suggestion--

Turn the volume control down on the GCT to half or less. My GCT sounds considerably better when I have the output low and just use my stereo/amplifier to crank up the volume. I noticed crackling when the volume slider on my GCT is up all the way, but it is hardly noticeable to me when turned down.

No luck turning the sound down....still plenty of cracks and pops. The sound quality is worse than a tape or LP...not anything I want to use as a MP3 server.

Have their been any hacks on the MB to get a true line out from the sound chip, like on the I-Opener? Plug-ins for winAmp (etc..) to help?

How about a USB sound 'card'? Not that I want to throw any more money into this thing, but I've spent too much time to give up now!

Any help appreciated!

Thx,
-Ed

If anyone cares.....

Ordered a USB sound device from /www.usbgear.com for $39.
Works great, sound quality has improved 1000%+!

If anyone is using the GCT for a MP3 server, you may want to give this a try.
