The red garbage characters at the top at boot isn't a prompt, it's an error message which indicates that there is a IDE boot problem and it couldn't find a device to boot on.

The bios has no password, there just isn't a keystroke option to enter the setup as this is a feature of Phoenix bios that can be set from the factory. Even if you did have an bios image, there are not any programs I am aware of will flash the Phoenix bios since this is only supported if the manufactur supplies the proper flashing program which Gateway doesn't.

The only other option to flash the GCT bios chip is with the eprom burner hardware that Badflash has. Which this I tried, the removable chip turned out to be the same as the newer one and the difference was apparently an onboard unremovable bios chip, go figure??

I might have hosed my BIOS. After it wouldn't boot, I realised that I had pinched a wire between edge of the motherboard and the RF shield and this cut the rubber around the wire. I think it was the power wire to the screen.

Anyway, it won't recognize either harddrive that I've tried. I also get that "red garbage" on the top of the screen. Any keystroke causes it to repeat the garbage characters one line down every time. I can still get into the BIOS like before, but when listing the IDE options (I don't remember exactly where in the BIOS), the "D" character in "Drive" is messed up. ...weirdest thing.

Any explainations or advice from anyone?
I'd like to find a BIOS image because I have a friend of a friend with BIOS burning hardware. (please email me)

I have the older GCT with a new keyboard and have gotten into the BIOS before but I dont remember what key strokes were used. What keystrokes are used for those of who are able to enter the BIOS. I can send an IMAGE once I confirm I can enter the BIOS

Most GCT's won't allow entry into bios setup, the early ones do, it's been awhile but I believe that if you hit the ESC key at the right time when the unit powers up, you can get a boot menu which you can select which boot device to boot from and from that menu (pop up text in the center of the screen) you can pick the last option which is enter setup.... I beleive there is a keystroke like ALT ESC too but some keyboards don't have the ALT key.

The bios image is tough, a long time ago Jack Rolands Aka..Badflash and I worked on this; there is more to the cmoes entry than just the removable bios chip. I had a unit that I could get into setup and I sent the bios chip to him to duplicate and compare to the regular; as I recall the bios in the older and newer units were the same, somewere on the GCT is a non-removable companoin bios chip which holds the key to this..... another way to know if yours allow entry into cmos setup is if when you turn it on you see the AOL & Gateway black & white logo; all the others just have the big color green and white gateway logo on power on.

from reading my above explaination, do you guys think I hosed my bios?

I have the black and white screen that shows both gateway and aol. I just used a regular keystroke to get in, I think it was f2.

christoffs, please email me (or post somewhere) the image if you have it! thanks!

I just got 4 old style GCT's. They all have the dual logo during bootup. I've entered the BIOS on 2 of them before but couldn't remember what keystrokes I used. What program(s) could I used to make the appropriate image? Will any version of the Phoenix software work?

Was this GCT bios mistery ever solved? Is there a way to reflash or a replacement bios available from badflash? Got one on the way and I'm getting emotionally ready (and making a shopping list) :)

There was no joy called on that as far as I know, The companion rom chip which is right below the mini-pci is the key. duplicating the rom contents of that chip is the key which requires you to de-solder the chip and rewrite it and of course then solder it back on.

There isn't a whole lot you are missing by not getting into bios if that's any help! The standard bios config allows for cd-rom then hard drive boot order, some power managment functions. The bios does not support booting from USB which was a real downer.

The same fine folks who built the i-Opener were the ones who made the GCT, they were so dead against hacking that they went out of their way to block modifications, had they spent less moeny and time on anti-hacking, they could have built it a little cheaper and actually had a successful product.
