Orinoco Wirelss with WinXP on a GCT

Don't suppose anyone out there has XP installed trying to use Lucent Orinoco wireless USB adapters?

Mine works for about 2-3 minutes after bootup but then starts stopping and starting, the client manager states there is a driver problem and the radio loses signal. Any got any ideas?? (the adapter works fine on another PC, and I have tried two differnent ones with no luck)I also tried a self powered USB hub thinking it might be a power issue, however the hardware manager shows the power amp requirement as less than the USB mouse I am using (I tried it without the mouse on the bus too..)

This is the first time I have had any problems with the USB ports on the GCT, I hope it's just the Orinoco card or Windows XP.

I have the same problem on my XP laptop with both a PC Card (dlink) and USB (Linksys) wireless adapter. They work fine on other sysyems (W2k & 98). I get anywhere from 3 mins to several hours of solid connection before I have to reboot and start over.

The same PC card worked great on the same hardware running W2k.

My guess is a problem with the built in wireless functionality of XP, but that is just a WAG on my part, I haven't dug into it too much.

I dumped XP and loaded Windows ME and got the adapter to work, I also found a article in MS Knowledgebase that stated that XP had some sort of issue with, I believe it was OHC USB hub or controller (I searched again and can't find it now)

I may go back to XP as it was a lot faster and just seemed more solid, wierd thing was the 256mb sodimm that I was trying out in that XP would recognize a total of 310mb with it and ME would only see 304mb. I may put XP back on if I can get the USB wireless problem fixed as I hope one of the "Windows Updates" might fix it but right now I can't get it on the internet since all I have is my wireless adapter.

Hmmm, I'll have to keep an extra eye on some local Oem dumpsters for more wireless "defective" products....Then hope Win XP drivers appear...

I found that Dell is selling a mini-pci card, it's part of their "TrueMobile" product line, I bought one off eBay for $95 then went the Dell site and found it there for $93! (prices include shipping)

The only issue would be it the antenna, I saw a notebook wireless antenna some time ago which was a small rectangle thin antenna which had one side sticky (the actual antenna was about an inch wide; 3 or 4 inchd long and was paper thin). Not sure if the one from Dell includes the antenna, I am going email Dell about the antenna.

FYI - the TrueMobile is actually Lucent Orinoco OEM branded wireless hardware, the TrueMobile access point are the RG1100 and AP100 AP's.

I believe I have found an antenna that will work; a MIG24WAVE antenna, a seller on eBay has been selling these for awhile, according to him the antenna connecter is a MC connecter and from what I can tell so far the Dell mini-pci Truemobile card was the MC antenna connecter.

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2003528730

I have the card and antenna hopefully on their way and I will post the results! also I have read that these antennas are good when you take your portable computer out and drive around looking for wireless AP's Kinda like wardialing in the old days but with a new tech twist!

Gee,That antenna "looks" just like the one I'm using stuck to the interior on my car windshield as an extended range antenna for my wireless door locks/alarm control. Got it at Rat shack awhile ago on clearance for $5. It's an 800 mhz cellular antenna and not designed for the freq of my keyless entry but it DOES noticably improve the range. Great for an old geezer like me who often forgets where I park in the mall parking lot. Just press the button on the remote and my car chirps. Ah there you are....(Just hope no one else has the same digital signal.)

All this particular antenna is is an etched thin PCB at a specific 800MHZ wavelength wired with RG-174 coax.
It had a clamp on parasitic link at the opposite end. I cut it of and physically spliced to the remotes receiver in the car.

I imagine one familar with RF design could construct a simular style antenna for 2.4 GHZ.

The propietory MC connector could be a problem though.

I found Orinoco Dell mini-pci cards for $70 at http://www.tlab.net/~jungmann/cables/stuff.html I emailed the guy and he stated he had 10 left and told he would sell the lot for $550, I just bought one for $90 (from somewere else without looking around much), Dell has them marked down to $85

This card will fit in the GCT and most likely the WebPlayer, but I can confirm the WebPlayer but it's the same mini-pci slot. The drivers are available from the Dell website.
