Dead GCT Keyboard Help?

New MessageDead GCT Keyboard Help? (modified 0 times) VansMan

I just tried the KB that came with a GCT I bought on ebay a while back, "AS IS". It appears to be dead (The unit itself is fine, and hacked already! ).

Just wondering if anyone else has had this trouble, and if there are any common problems (and easy fixes) that others have seen. The unit does not appear to be physically damaged, and I don't hear any loose parts (No more than the other GCT KBs I have)

I have several KBs to use, so it is not a show stopper for me, but I would like to fix this one in case I ever decide to sell any of these things.

Thanks!

I have to ask, did you double check the batterys? :) That's the only problem I have seen with the keyboards.

The other thing that comes to mind since you mentioned that it was already hacked is that if the prior owner tried the ps/2 keyboard mod to add ps/2 ports; I did on one of mine and unfortuntly failed (got a little crazy with solder iron) and my GCT keyboard doesn't work any longer.

Check the condition of the square chip (should have a sticker matching the one on the removable bios chip) under the min-pci card and the solder pads above it, has there been any modification attempts there?

Yep , checked the batteries!

I was the one who hacked it, it came to me 'fresh' with the AOL software still on it. KBs from my other GCTs work fine on it, and the bad KB does not work on any of the other GCTs I have. I think it is safe to assume it is a KB only issue. I'll plan to crack it open in the next few days.

Thx

I had the same problem when I bought one as well from "AS-IS". The touchpad was brand new, but the keyboard was no good. I took it apart, and I noticed some of the wire connections were melted (I assume from a battery leak). I tried to soldier on a by-pass, but it was no good.

I ended up buying a Lite-On Wireless Keyboard ($30) from pclub.com:

The good news is, you get a complete keyboard (with 'Alt' keys) by buying the one above.
