Anyone installing other mini-pci cards and having problems? I am trying a Dell Lucent mini-pci card (under XP os) and I am running out of IRQ's and the card is not working. The drivers are installed but the card never detects the wireless network. The USB controller comes and goes, XP tells me that the hardware is running out of resources and cannot allocate a IRQ for it and I disable the secondary IDE controller and it comes back.

I was thing it was an antenna issue at first but I tried the same card with a homemade antenna in a notebook that has a mini-pci slot and the card works fine. The hardware device manager tells me that everything is happy and wireless card is working.

Anyone else having a problem with this? I am not sure if this is a XP issue or the card, I may try Win2K to see if it's the OS.

Yes, I am running XP on the GCT; XP found all the drivers with the exception of a "Soft Modem". OF course there isn't a driver for the touchscreen so that part is only thing that dosen't work.

The Dell mini-card is detected, first as a Texas Instuments card bus controller then as the TrueMobile wireless card. XP even has has the drivers for the Wireless card but the card can not find any AP's or other wirless computers. Really strange as the Dell card worked fine on a Gateway Solo 9500 notebook with the homemade antenna but so far not in the GCT.

I was really surprised that that the Truemobile mini-pci card was detected as a card bus controller first, apparently it's designed the same as the PCI & ISA adapter cards that are used to run the standard wireless PCMCIA card bus wireless adapters. It would be interesting if a PCMCIA socket could be hacked on the card then you could run any card bus card on it.

It would appear from the Linux Driver ORiNOCO PC Cards v6.16 - Winter 2002 release http://www.orinocowireless.com/template.html?section=m52&envelope=90&page=3268 that the Linux driver supported the ORiNOCO MiniPCI Card since Version 6.03 (Beta)-August 8, 2000.

wireless - Drop the guy a email, he offered to sell me one at $65, he might do better if you buy 6. I might buy another, but that may be awhile.

On the XP and the wireless issue, the card is working fine. The problem seems to be with XP, when I un-select "Let windows configure the connection" (or something like that) The client manager reports that the wireless card is working and indicates the strength of the signal.

I am going to try Win2K this weekend and see if it's better, first however I am going to install the winter 2001 drivers from Orinoco and see if that makes a difference as I am running the Orinoco USB adapters on my "Barbie" PC under Win XP with no problem, The problem seems to be the MS provided driver that XP uses, Dell doesn't have a XP driver update yet or I can't seem to find it; They do have a Win2K driver, I might try it instead too.

FYI - 256mb of memory with XP on the GCT makes a big difference, I tried running with just the 32mb SODIMM and hated it, 256mb makes it a lot better. Also XP is a hella of lot better in speed that WinME or Win98. The memory I am using is a Pony brand this time, it has the 16 chip SODIMM design.

just got mine. Only problem is that it doesn't come with the cable to connect to an antenna...so it's useless for now.
The guy said it came with it, so i've sent him an email to have him send me that cable !

Before we get too carried away getting these for the GCT, had anyone got this working in the GCT yet? I know a couple of you have this working in the WebPlayer....

I have been trying since last Wednesday and can't get it going yet. The best I have so far is the drivers and manager installed under Win2k. I get a good connection according to the client manager but the network connection shows that the "cable" is disconnected and I get no network connection.

Is there something I am missing making the actual network connection detect the wireless link? The radio RF part is working and detects my RG-1100 but something just doesn't click and make the connection between the card and the protocol. FYI - The client manager allows me to edit the profile and all that is good. Also I did install WinRoute from Dell's site as they recommeded this under Win2K.

Any ideas?

Well Dell's knowledge base tells me that the "cable disconnected" msg is because I didn't have WinRoute installed.

I have re-loaded the HD with Win98se (I have reloaded 3 OS's just today) and now I am getting a "code 7" and that the drivers need to be re-loaded. When I reload it's get's me nothing but the code 7 again. I am a wee bit bit tired, I have been working on this all weekend....

I may go back to Win2k since that's were I had my best results so far (The Orinoco USB wireless adapter works great under Win2k unlike XP) I may contact Dell directly and see how far I get; it most likely won't help if I tell them I am installing on Gateway internet appliance but from what I have heard their support is a lot better than Gateway's.

Anyone but me trying this ??? (yellow???)

BigDog-

I dont have any miniPCI card to try... It seemed that you were making progress, and it seemed that the Linux drivers from Orinoco were available... I guess I was jumping in whole heartedly! WooHoo! I guess I am a bit over zealous! If you need help, blast me an e-mail and I might be able to help you over the phone. I have only got the Gold card working on '98 and CE (haven't tried anything else)

When I am ready to order I will drop you a line!

I have a little more success, I found this regedit on Gateway's website regarding an issue of improper Irq routing under Windows 2000 ONLY.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pcmcia\Parameters]
"DisableIsaToPciRouting"=dword:00000000

This was a Win2K fix only, now the card is recognized and the LAN connection is showing connected but I am not receiving any packets, only transmitting. When I get back home I will try peer to peer adh-hoc and see what happens.

Also I called Dell support, they won't talk to you unless you have a ID number from a dell computer which is what I expected. It's bull that they won't support the products they sell.

OK, I have it working under Win2K (I am typing this msg on my GCT right now!), after I applied the 2k fix that's with the Orinoco PCI card adapter (the PCI adapter for the card buss cards for Orinoco cards) This is a reg patch mentioned in the above msg and a replacement of the pcmcia.inf file.

I started thinking that hey, this mini-pci adapter isn't any different than the reguler PC adapter that Lucent has for the desktop machines only that in the mini-pci version you can actually remove the adapter; so I started looking at the drivers Lucent has for the adapter and found they had a special patch for Win2k OS.

I am getting great RF signel (using a wire lead as an antenna) but the actual preformance is bad as the GCT seems to lose connection to the card every few minutes and in a web browser it requires a refresh. I believe it's a reg adjust to change to ip transmit window or something similer (I am not a Windows reg hacker so I will accept any help here)

Same thing occurs to me although I was using a usb Dlink wireless 802.11b and a usb farallon ethernet so that the GCT becomes a real GCT (bad pun intended). My receiving laptop was dropping in and out every few minutes but this didnt occur when i used my usb dlink wireless on my desktop. I wonder why..I had orginally thought I had not set my gct on auto transmit.

I can't get the Dell card work right at all, BUT I did find another wireless card; it's the D-Link model WMP11 PCI adapter. It has a mini-PCI under a RF like shield which socketed to a standard desktop PCI card which includes a antenna.

So far so good, I going to reload XP and see what happens, Win2K worked well as the drivers and management utility loaded and it connected right off to my Orinoco RG-1100 AP, preformance was not too good but I believe I tweaked Win2k too much and I really feel a reload is in order.

Also the D-Link card is a true PCI device unlike the Dell Orinoco card which acts as a PCMCIA controller with the wireless card acting like it's inserted into one of it's slots. The D-Link is detected alone as the wireless network adapter.

Downside; it's more expensive, I paid $119 to get one local, I found them on the internet for $86 plus shipping. I going to find a good price and Staples where I bought it will price match it.

I think the card BigDog is referring to is a Linksys card, not a D-Link. The model number and description fit the Linksys.

I have seen those in use, they kick A$$, the commercial ones will kick up you distance big time on a wireless PTP connection.

Regarding the LinkSys WMP11 it works great under WinXP Pro! MUCH better than than the Orinoco Dell card since the Linksys card has a Intersil controller chip which allows the PCI intergration without a PCMCIA controller and it works directly with the PCI bus. My GCT is working great with a RG1100 AP with the Linksys card in it, I do have encrytion turned off (I don't wanna see no stange cars parked outside my house!) but it's working great, Linksys XP driver updates are available including firmware updates for the card to make it work right with XP's built-in wireless networking.

I tried calling Dell support again and they thumbed me off, the customer "support" person I talked told me that unless I bought a complete Dell system that supported the Truemobile card, then I could not get support for the Dell card. I told her that was not right and a least I should be able to talk to someone about the card in tech support and she then hung up on me. Thanks to that last call, Dell just lost the opportunity to sell my company 30 complete PC systems with flat monitor LCD screens that I am putting out on bid next month at work. I do not deal with companys that act like that! I will make it my job to be sure that Dell does not be a RTB!

Just picked up a Linksys PCI card. Unfortunately that shield is soldered on so removing it is probably gonna leave some undesirable marks...in case it doesn't work well.
What did you do about the antenna ?
WIth USB adapters going for $49 I wonder whether this is still a very good option ?

True the USB is a little cheaper... But this is a lot more fun!! and the PCI wireless will be a little more stable and there are Linux Drivers at ftp://ftp.linksys.com/linux/linux-wlan-ng-0.1.14-pre1.tar.gz

http://home.mchsi.com/~gctp/index.html shows my mod's, the outside RF shield can be taken off with a little TLC and a hot electric de-soldering iron.

Nice hack!
You caught my interest now! I've actually have had interest in RF for years but my attention span wanders...

I have not ran across any of these pci cards yet in my travels but who knows, I may get lucky one day! Or find one on clearance sales IF 802.11a ever catches on...

Well actually, D-Link has a 802.11a 5Ghz which runs up to 72 mbps.

It even appears that you can get it in the same style as the Linksys WMP11 with a pci adapter to mini pci.... (I can't confirm the mini-pci form facter, but the pictures seem to indicate it!)
