Anyone get a real version of linux working on this

Well first of all good news about getting this to work properly in winme with touchscreen.

and you say the video was designed for winme?

but even if this is true this appliance overall was designed to work with a small version of linux, so has anyone tryied a full version of linux with hdd meathod, a full proper version of linux can be shrunk to fit on the flash, so it would boot up few seconds and then store mp3's on hdd (or cant you have both?)

anyway has anyone tried it with linux as it was designed for a smaller version and the drivers should come with it too?

just a thought, i dont know much about linux but im learning.

I think you are going to have to wait until some more of the units start arriving at their new homes.
Mine are on the way.

That will be one of my first missions...get this thing running as an X terminal. I want to find out how the flash disk is partitioned so I can remove the info off the flash card and preserve it to make use of the touch screen code and any of the other special modifications that AOL has done on top of the base OS. More that likely if we can figure out how to modify what is there, alot of the work is done. Security sounds like it may be a concern since there is no log in. I doubt any of the daemons are installed (such as ftpd, httpd etc) so you might not be able to do much anyway.

Does anyone have experience with Midori? I've used Redhat(half step up from Redmond...) and Slackware (very durable...crash resistant).

but all of this is just speculation until I get my box on the 18th (I can't touch it until that Sunday though bc my mom's getting remarried...)

Later

Whats the Status/Feasibility of getting a distro of Midori installed on this thing?
Im not a Linux user (Graphics guy...) but Ive delved into the power of the penguin a few times and it seems ideal for this little appliance.

I'm new to this board, so I haven't read everything yet. I did find an article on setting up linux on a CF - http://embedded.linuxjournal.com/magazine/issue03/4551/ maybe it will help. Quite a bit of useful info flowing from you guys...Thanks. My GWTP should be here today or Monday however it's destined for my wife. She gets pissed everytime I change something on our other machines and can't get her email so maybe this will bring peace to household.

I'm not a Linux guy, but isn't there quite a bit of material on setting up a Midori distribution on Transmeta's Midori site:

kamajo, Sorry guys...this is a bit off topic for thread, but just wanted to tell kamajo... Same situation here. Hubby gets really ticked off when I do a minor or major upgrade... In his words "Well, of course about all I do is email (he's very active with some professional groups)" and then a month later he'll ask, "Can I do (this or that) with my computer? Why not but don't give me any details." I tell him I can upgrade it so it can. He says, "Too many other things, more important to do." A month later he's whinning because he can't do this or that. Only solution I know of is to build antoher system with major upgrades, without telling him, clone hard drive, and then deal with all adjustments/problems that arise, test, test, test (!!!!!!!), then exchange systems when he is not here. I've told him about XP. When it goes gold and he wants it I'm going to get some medication to assist me in coping, for a few months, while he gets used to it. Maybe I can sleep throuh it..... I'm sure this is familiar to many on this board.

Double post -Oh well. Here are some Distro's that will work on a CF Card:

Tom's Root/Boot disk - http://www.toms.net/rb/
LEM distro - http://linux-embedded.com/
BlueCat - http://www.lynuxworks.com/products/whatisbcl.html
Hard Hat Linux - http://www.mvista.com/
Bruce - http://bglug.8m.com/

I like this one, since I've used it.
PocketLinux - http://pocket-linux.coven.vmh.net/

I have had success in installing Linux on the GCT!
This is a good sign that the BIOS was not hampered like the IOpener. I believe other Linux distros should be possible.
I used a few different mini distro's so far to rough out which will be the distro of choice for me.
Here is what I have learned so far:

mulinux based on 2.0.36 kernel-
In its basic configuration- no X11 windows yet since that is an addon disk which I have not bothered to make yet- but I see no problems with doing so. Adding the GCT drivers to the distro will take a bit of doing but I will look into it later.
SVGA may only be available in the distro's addon disk option. Sound, USB, and touch screen will require a development build, and to make it easy, an addon disk create so during the install you just pop in a floppy and you would get the GCT goodies.
Since it is 2.0.36 USB support may not be an option... a USB back port patch may be available... that needs looking into.
All-in-all mulinux is a great distro with a nice active community... but the kernel needs updating.

JailBait Linux 6.0 (IOpener build from LEM)
Based on 2.4.0-test1 Kernel... so this is a good thing.
It boots to a certain point but dies looking for a root partition since it is built with the boot drive being hdb (IOpener sees the second IDE slot as hdb since the SanDisk is on the bus- I beleieve).
To fix this distro would require a developmental build environment with LEM and JailBait sources.
I never really used JailBait (just booted and tinkered) but it has a pretty good rep. I have been unable to ever get in touch with the Author... maybe someone else has a closer tie.
USB support is most likely ready to go since it is based on the 2.4 kernel.
Sound, Video, touch screen would neeed to be added.

Midori Linux (GCT native Linux based on 2.4 kernel)
This of course seems like the most promising ditro since it is the one which ships with the GCT. The Transmeta site has the distro and docs.
I have downloaded it but have not looked at it yet... stay tuned.

Hard Hat Linux - I have it but have not installed the development environment yet.

PocketLinux - I have it but have never been able to load it up properly... It looks promising from the press and things I have seen...

I think my real development focus will be on the Midori distro and the HardHat distro (since I am trying to port Linux to the epods). I will continue to tinker with the mulinux distro though.

Here is another thought... Do you think we should set up a PayPal fund to try and buy a few GCT's to send to the authors of some of the mini-Linux distros like JailBait, mulinux etc. as incentives for them to port to the GCT. My company is interested in donating a GCT to one of the Mini-Linux distro authors.
