Won't boot w/hard drive

I just got my GCT. I opened it up, pleased to see the 44pin IDE header. I got my badflash cable, hooked up my 40gb notebook drive, and got the garble in the upper right hand corner. The compactflash card was removed. It didn't sound like the drive was spinning up. I tried other AC adapters and that didn't help. I was using a 2.4A 19V HP notebook adapter. I checked to make sure the pins were powered and a very clean 5V came up. I even checked the other end of the badflash cable and that showed 5V too. The drive is bootable (I tried it in a desktop by itself). I know the cable is in because the 5V is showing up. Does anyone have any ideas? I also tried a 20gb drive and that didn't work either. Both are Toshiba drives and 9.5mm. I tried it with the cover on and off but to no avail. Please help. Thanks.

Make sure there aren't any pins missing on the IDE header, several of the GCT's I have seen that had a orginal header had a pin clipped... usually around pin 38 or 39, it's normal to have a center pin missing this is standard for keying.

Also be sure the IDE cable is connceted correctly, pin 1 is towards the top and also check the hard drive; it's usually labeled on the PCB board of the drive sometimes with just a straight line.

The problem was the drive wasn't getting enough power to boot up. I used an external supply and it worked fine. I have a new ac adapter on the way with more amps. Thanks for the help.

I have the same problem.

Per Badflash pin pwoer S/B:

41 +5V (logic)
42 +5V (motor)
43 GND
44 reserved

I have 4.92 volts.

What kind of amps should I be seeing??

I got the HD to spin finally.

The 4 row base rbbon connector was not seating properly.

Now it will not boot. Gateway screen then couple machine code characters only.

I have a GTC unit. I purchased the header and cable from badflash to install an internal Hard drive. The soldering went well, and I have good continuity from all the solder pads to the connecter pins. I have a Hitachi 4GB laptop drive that I just formated and installed win 98 on (using my desktop and a connector).

When I power up the GCT with just the flash card, it works fine.
When I attach the hard drive, all I get is the gatway screen, and the hard drive isn't spinning up. I originally attached the hard drive without win98, and I got the gateway screen and a few characters in the upper left of the screen, but that was it.

I have read all of the other similar stories here, and I had a couple of questions...

Does anyone have a list of hard drives that have been found to be compatible with this machine?

If I use an external powersupply for the drive, should I cut any of the pins off of the header that supply power (or ground)?

What else should I do to the drive to help the machine see it? I mean, is just 'format d: /u/s' and installing win98 enough, or do I need: special drivers, jumper setting, etc.

Thanks for taking the time to help with my problems,
