Can't create bootable CF card

New MessageCan't create bootable CF card (modified 0 times) jason_559

I followed the steps to a "T" that were outlined here:
http://orchycam.hypermart.net/GTC.htm

Then when that failed with an "invalid system disk, replace and press any key" error, I tried:
GCT Midori Image v0.03 w/ mozilla-1.0 off of this site:
http://gct2.leeandjennifer.com:8080//index.php?actionID=downloads
And with that I get the following colored in red at the top left of the screen:
<symbol><smile symbol><gender signs?>twice<divide symbol><spades symbol><another system>
Pressing any key just produces them again...

Any clues on what could be wrong? I can still read the default 32mb card with AOL on it...

Sounds like you need to make the compact flash card bootable.
The only way that we've figured out how to do that it by using Ranish Partition Manager (http://www.ranish.com/part/) in Windows ME. (Has to be Win ME - for some reason, that is the only operating system that will allow Ranish to run in a command prompt window and recognize a USB card reader).

Ok,

I've tried the program listed above, and made the partition active (confirmed it in fdisk). I did a "sys e:" from a Windows 98 (original) boot disk after booting into Windows 98. It said the files were transferred successfully but when I remove the CF card and put it in the Gateway it still says "invalid system disk". Anything I'm missing???

Start from scratch one last time
1)Pop the card in the USB reader on a Windows ME machine
2) Format the card FAT16
3) Use Ranish to set the partition bootable
4) Manually Copy/Paste the system files from the floppy to the CF card (instead of doing "sys e:")
5) Make sure those files are on the card
6) Pop it in the GCT and try again.

That should get you to a C:/ prompt.

If that doesn't work then maybe your brand of CF card is not recognized by the GCT. I've heaard of certain devices not recognizing certain brands of CF card.

I printed out the steps, took them with me to my ME machine, and followed them exactly. Same error, Invalid system disk. I've tried two different CF types, PNY, and now a SanDisk (same brand used in the machine originally) but mine is 128 megs. I can't see how neither of these would work... Do you have any other suggestions or maybe an image of yours you could send me?

Thanks

The image wouldn't help if you can't get your CF to show the dos prompt.
What you could try is go to a digital camera store and format your CF in there. Try a Canon, it used to work for me.
What you tried up to now should have worked though. Are you able to boot with the original AOL CF ?
cheers

I formatted the card in my digital camera, took it to my PC sys'd it with Win98, and checked with Fdisk to ensure it was active (it was). Returned it to the GCT and now I get a frozen gatway image, hitting keys doesn't do anything. Does this mean anything inparticular?

Could be something wrong in one of your system files. Sounds like it's looking at the A:/ drive. That is the same error message that you get when you leave a non-system floppy in the A:/ drive and try to boot up.

Yeah, I'm using a USB writer/reader. Think any of these places would carry an IDE model:
Best Buy
CompUSA
Office Max
Office Depot???
Those are the places in town that carry computer items, I hate to mail order one and it not be the problem...

Any chance a PCMCIA to compact flash adapter would work? I found those locally...
