I did it! TFT on a GCT!!!
The GCT WILL drive a TFT display!

Well after a lot of study (and some luck) I was able to get a TFT display to work on the GCT! Turns out that the 40pin CN6 is a TFT connector! Also the BIOS does support TFT, there is a pin on CN6 that when you ground it and reboot, it puts the GCT in TFT mode :)

Check out this pix of the GCT driving a LT121S1 12.1" SVGA display. http://jmayes.com/gct/gct-tft1.jpg

Mostly it just takes a custom cable from CN6 to whatever display you use (must be 18bit SVGA) If anyone is interested contact me direct and I will work out some kind of kit.

GOODBYE TO THE SUCKY DSTN!!!

Cheers,
Jmayes

That's good to know, but the real question is:

Which TFT display can be subbed for the DSTN display, and still keep the touchscreen active? Is the touchscreen integrated into the current display, or does it sit in front?

The touchscreen membrane is attached to the surface of the DSTN LCD, while I guess someone might be able to remove it (heat like a hair dryer), nine times to ten it would be damaged in the process.

Update………

First off my pix link has changed, see http://jmayes.com:82/gct/gct-tft1.jpg

I was able to easily remove the touchscreen by using a razor knife and splitting the foam seal between the touchscreen and LCD, I only split it on 3 sides and lifted the touchscreen toward the fourth side. After removing the touchscreen you can rub the remains of the foam & Glue from both the touchscreen and LCD.

Now the larger problem is finding TFT SGA (800x600) LCD's that will fit in place of the original. I have received several but most are just VGA (640x480) and 10.4" which are larger then the original which are 10.1". I have not been able to get the BIOS into a VGA mode so even if I can get some VGA LCD's to fit success is not promising.

One screen which I found in a HP Omnibook 800 fits all the requirements except it requires a vertical sync signal which is not present on the TFT connector. I believe that the signal I need is on the MB which we can run a jumper to but I have not confirmed this yet.

Soooo… If anyone has a lead on some 10.1" SGA TFT's please chime in! If anyone has something laying around please let me test it!

And for you do-it yourselfers, I will post my findings & pinouts later this week.

So there you have it, more soon…

I'm wondering if my GCT will be able to perform a specific function when I mod it with a TFT...

I'm using a linux based PVR setup called mythtv (available at http://www.mythtv.org ) with a dedicated backend server and several frontend clients connected via wired and wireless ethernet. I'm wondering how well the GCT will do as a frontend, decoding mpeg4 (with 160mb of RAM and the relatively underpowered cpu, load is a concern), and equally as important, will a TFT handle full screen video with no noticable degradation? I understand the Silicon Motion video isn't the fastest, but will it do?

Any thoughts, or has anyone tried something similar?

jmayes, i've emailed and emailed, and have yet to hear from you to get the instructions on getting this TFT-GCT thing working. I'd suggest that you start a thread/section on chaezewiz's GCTP site (http://linux2.leeandjennifer.com:8080/ ), or even your own website (if it's dns will resolve properly), so the community can make use of the great work you have done. Let me know what you think.

p.s. I have mythtv-client working on my internal
SoopaOS, but need to re-work other packages to get
it to work properly and smoothly as a downloadable package

if McGyver can save the day with just three milk cartons, why can't I do it with two?

^bump^

just hoping that jmayer will share his wonderous mod for the GCT, or let us know where to buy the cabling, because my tweaked out GCT is just sitting here staring at my newly ebayed Samsung LCD. Has anyone else accomplished this GCT-TFT trick and would be willing to share?

Guess your ISP's DNS lookup doesn't resolve to the right server?

Hope it works... if not, send me an email and I'll send 'em too ya!

I sent jmayes an email asking why he'd never posted more info on his TFT conversion. He told me that, due to some malfunction, he was unable to post to the board. Anyway, he'd said that he had to custom-make his cabling, and he was missing one inut pin on his chosen panel so it didn't quite work right.

Just in case you were curious as I was. I'm sure it's possible...
