HDD Won't Spin Up!

There are a few posts regarding HDDs, but I have not found my answer... I bought my Gateway with a 44pin header already attached. i bought a 44pin cable from cablesonline.com and popped it in. Connected the drive and powered it on. unfortunately, the drive doesn't even spin up. All of the pins are intact. From previous posts the problem, I think id either not enough power or I have the wrong cable (i.e. just a standard 44pin cable). I appreciate any help the gurus can provide

Thanks,
Bob

If you have a standard 44 pin IDE cable, that won't work, you need a i-Opener type cable were every other line is reversed....

Check http://www.badflash.com/iopener.html

scroll down to the i-opener IDE cables and GCT IDE cables...

thanks for the help. I bought the badflash cable and the hard drive spins! unfortunately, I still can't boot. I get the first AOL Gateway screen and then garbage text in the upper left corner. The drive I am using is from an old compaq laptop and has windows xp installed on it. I put the drive in my desktop as a slave and it is readable. what could be wrong?

3 things I can think of:

1. Make sure your hard disk is set as bootable and has
a bootable OS.

2. Make sure you have taken the Compact Flash card out, it
will prevent you from booting your disk.

3. I have had problems with GCT's that came with the
44pin header already installed in that there is usually
one pin that is missing out of the 44. I take a piece
of 1/4watt resistor lead, solder it to the pad where the
pin is missing, and with a pair of needle nose pliers,
bend it over, up and straight so it is in line with the other
pins. Then cut it flush in length with the others. Carefully
re-attach cable and see if that helped...
