Bootable CF Disk Howto?
What's the trick to making a bootable DOS flash disk?

OK, I give up! I have tried for a week to make a bootable DOS flash disk for my GCT so I can install windoze. I have tried a 64MB sandisk and a 340MB microdrive. I am using a USB memory card reader (I do not have access to a IDE flash card drive) and tried to format and sys both cards in win98 SE running under VMware. I tried ranish, diskprobe, partition magic, etc. to make the damn thing bootable but I invariably get the "invalid system disk - press any key" or some other "non system disk" nastygram. I know the hardware is good because I can "DD" linux build images onto these disks and boot from them. Unfortunately, I can't find a WORKING linux flash image that supports my USB network adapter (needs the kaweth.o module) and I don't know enough about linux to roll my own.
If anyone has an image file of a DOS boot flash I'd be eternally grateful, or maybe someone can tell me what the secret is?

Could you partition the card and mark it bootable using fdisk or such. If the dos/windows fdisk command doesn't do it, you can try with the linux fdisk since in linux the usb CF are treated as scsi drives it should work.

No linux install? download and burn to cdr a copy of Knoppix, a linux distro that works from cdrom. doesn't touch your current hard drive, just boot off the cd and use. Pretty amazing distribution and it makes a killer rescue disk (though it's much more).

Good luck

Been there, done that! Knoppix is a truly amazing distribution; I use it all the time, and I also use mandrake linux on VMware under a win2K host. I toggled the bootable flag in fdisk to no avail. Unfortunately, knoppix (running on CD anyways) apparently doesn't support being a NFS server so I can't boot the GCT off of that with one of the linux GCT images. This is totally bogus...can anyone verify this: if I get a IDE flash card interface will I actually be able to make a bootable DOS CF?
