HEY This GTC makes a great source of parts fo the i-Opener!
Lots of kool stuff!

OK I've taken the stand off of the GTC and mounted it on one of my i-Openers and it looks TOTALLY KOOL!

Hmm there are some other useful parts on the GTC...Lets see,

10.5" LCD with touchpad. (Maybe I can locate a seperate controller card for this touchpad to use on the i-Opener, I'll be searching thru some old posts soon!)
anyway it's nice to have a spare LCD these can break EASY!

32 Meg compact flash Oh and a socket! Hmmm, Does this little socket fit in the i-Opener? Time to warm up the BLASTER MASTER! 1000 watt heat gun. (Getting VERY good at this type of parts removal.) "Homebrew wave bulk Desoldering" .

Sodimm memory.

LCD interface cable! THE EXTENDED LCD CABLE MOD is a reality soon! mount that MOBILE in car i-Opener Mobo and hardrive assy under the passenger seat and extend the lcd cable to the dashboard mounted GPS display! Mobo/Cpu/hardrive stays cooler during those hot summer days! I have 7 i-Openers, some Hitachi some Sharp LCD's.

Bios chip. Reflash it for spare i-Opener!

Slim inline power supply adapter Hmmm, 19v @2.6 amps! (A little more current for that AMD K6-2+ 450)

Mini speakers

and some misc SMD parts for us that like to tinker!

*Note* I was going to resell this unit earlier only because of posted marginal/poor performance. Now I've decided it's a keeper for parts!

Ps I'm exchanging the HPNA mini pci card for the ethernet soon. Gateway customer service sez I have 30 days to do so...Anyway that will be up for grabs (trade or $} when I get it...

Have you started hitting the bottle a little too early this morning ? You are disassmebling your GCT to provide parts for your i-Opener? Sounds a little craazzeee!!

If anything, I would take the i-Opener apart and use it's parts on the GCT!

Take is easy on the whiskey, I myself never hit the hard stuff until after lunch! :~)

Yes, I may be a little crazy and love it...Some of my co-workers will even vouch for that
Hey, I really like the i-Opener. My opinion it's more flexable and overall with the K6-2/3+ 450/500 after reading opinions it seems like it's a lot Faster than the transmeta cpu. Yes the K6 may be a power sucker but I like it.
The *Gateway (and i-openers) may in abundance shortly anyway? I doubt the will get rid of a *million of them.

PS Drug and Alcohol free for 15+ years!

02U2,
Looks like at the rate this "hack" is going I've been considering the same. i-Opener ad ons! I'm certainly not going to send the gateway back!

The "rate that this hack is going"?

Most people have just gotten their machines or are still waiting. I got mine Thursday.

Add to that the missing IDE connector. But that's not a big factor in delaying things. Just have to order the part. I ordered mine Thursday night from DigiKey. Post Office priority mail got it to me on Saturday (I like priority mail - it's cheap and there's Saturday delivery).

So, as of 30 minutes ago, I'm booting WinME. Not too bad a delay. Now to see how the rest of it goes.

On the other hand, I agree that the price isn't TOO bad for components - but the readily-usable one's don't really amount to $200 + shipping (I'm think CF and memory).

smee....I've been trying to get a feel for the potential of this machine. Would you run the SiSoft Sandra cpu benchmark on your install please? You can get a free copy from Nonags.com. (under power tools) If you've never used this program before, it's very interesting.

I'm thinking touch screen overlay and ribbon cable socket, LCD, *Save the old one as a spare*, 32meg CF, CF socket, THE STAND is perfect and the speakers, Those should be better quality sound?.
I too am not at all convinced YET about the performance of this new transmeta cpu over the AMD K6 2plus.
Yellow1 are you going to post those benchmarks??? I'm very curious!

Also, I'm seriously considering ordering a second gateway IA for parts also!

New MessageWhat's the purpose of the rear door here? (modified 0 times) NormConquest
Profile | Email
The removable door on the left rear should be perfect for passing cables out to an external HD or CD, no? Or I may put my audio-out jacks under the door to keep the case looking stock (hide the mods).

From the size and position of this door, I'm thinking it was originally intended for a PCMCIA card slot. But then the modem (or is it the HPNA card -- which is which?) is mounted right in the path of where that card slot would sit, perpendicular to that path. I say they found and subsituted a cheaper device, ripped the PCMCIA off the plans -- but too late to eliminate the door from the cases. Anyone have any better guess as to what this door was meant for?

Could they have found a less convenient place to stash the stylus? And why no spare?

Where the I-O had two feeble little metal plates inside the RF shield to attach the stand, this has a solid metal slat running all the way across the back. This should add stability. And mass.

There are tiny vent holes on the rear case behind the microphone. Are these meant to improve the mic's performance? BTW, is the mic good for any purpose with the original AOL software?

Someone with a CF writer could make a modest profit selling CFs or microdrives with an OS installed. Once all the optimum drivers and settings are established, that is. Meanwhile, anyone in the market for a pulled 32Mb?

New MessageAnd just an afterthought or two to that ... (modified 0 times) NormConquest

(I had to break up one long msg into these three short ones 'cause the BBS was rejecting the original message.)

Are the bubbly speaker grille holes are purely decorative, or do they have some intention of enhancing the sound?

Black plastic enclosures wrap around the speakers. This should improve the bass notes, no? No sound wasted spilling out the back? Also note that the speakers connect to the MB with a removable jack. Should make testing improvements easier.

I'm still not clear about the SoDIMM here. What's the max we can install here?

What the heck is CN31? And what does the brown ribbon cable at CN9 carry?

Why would anyone take a file to the modem card to clear the IDE cable rather than file a millimeter off the IDE ribbon cable connectors? Am I missing something here?

There is not much material that you can remove from the ribbon cable connector without destroying its ability to hold itself together.

I didn't try any variations. I just removed the modem.

Maybe later I'll try putting it back in but for now I don't need it.
