DigiKey IDE smt header @ $6 shipped (#S2208-22-ND)

Yesterday I ordered 6 of the surface-mount IDE headers (DigiKey #S2208-22-ND) but only need 5 of them. If anyone needs one and wants to save a few bucks on DigiKey's under-$25 surcharge plus their shipping/handling, I'll let these five go at $6 each including shipping. This price will include postage and one of those 75 cent thick brown padded shipping envelopes. I think I'll come out 50 cents ahead each, so I promise not to spend it all in one place. (Actually, I'm being liberal this time around, because as I recall on the last parts deal I did I ended up around $5 in the hole. So wtf, I'll take out my revenge on my new Gateway friends.)

Ok, if you're interested, here's how it works. I will only have five to spare, so please do not PayPal me funds yet. Instead, register your interest here and also send me email (removed); then when I give you the go-ahead if you're one of the five, you can PayPal the money to that same email address. At paypal.com, you'll notice that I'm a "verified, premier PayPal member" so you're guaranteed a measure of protection if I go bankrupt and decide to buy an airplane ticket for Venezuela instead.

If there is some demand for actual soldering, I can do that as well, but that may not be cost-effective depending upon your situation (i.e., probably something like $15 or $20 for my time in busting it open, doing the work, and transporting it back to UPS; plus return shipping). If you find yourself in desperate straits in this regard, let me know. Frankly, though, I have a life and don't want to do more than one or two of these; anything more will severely piss off my wife.

That's it!

Randy,

I'd be interested in taking you up on the soldering service. I've got two GCT's sitting here in my office, one of them I know for a fact doesn't have the IDE header, and I plan to take the other apart to check it out soon. It would be worth $15 - $20 (plus shipping, etc.) per GCT to me because my soldering skills are... let's say nonexistant! I could also possibly take each of them apart before I ship them your way. Then you wouldn't have to bother taking the back casing or that shield off to do the soldering work.

If you are still seriously considering this, let me know as I am definitely interested. You can post your reply here, or to me directly via e-mail at: akeldama_1@yahoo.com.

Thanks, and I appreciate your offer for the soldering service.

Also placed an order for some of these parts, ordered 10, let me know if you would like one and I can send it out as soon as I receive them for $6 a piece, including shipping and packing, will save you the $5 charge if you only need one or two. Send me an email, Hippiewan@msn.com. Check out the No IDE header post, looks like these fit perfectly.

I'll also offer my soldering skills at $25 a pop + shipping both ways. That includes disassembly/reassembly, so you can ship in the Gateway box to provide best protection. This is if you provide the connector, but if I get 5 or 6 people interested, I'll buy the connectors and add another $5 to the price. If interested email me at BubbaDog56@ev1.net....

This piece has just the pins sticking up right? Not a plastic rectangle running around the pins like in destops right? I was just wondering because when I recieved my cables from Badflash today, they have the double end, and if the new connecter that was ordered has the plastic rectangle, it won't allow for the swapping to take effect. I.E. cable wont fit. Thanks!

Just a quick update to mention that the Digikey package hasn't arrived quite yet. I'll update everyone here and in email when the headers arrive.

Got my header in the mail yesterday. They are perfect! I installed one in my GCT in about 16 minutes. Yes I timed myself. It was really easy! I used .022 dia Rosin Core, solder. Rat Shack #64-013 B.And that was after I removed everything. Fixed my badflash cable and it fits perfectly. I should be getting my HDD from FedEx something today.

Wordsmith,

Did you use any flux at all? I mean, I read that you should at least use extra flux to wet the joints as you do em,
then again you probably solder much better than I do. I got my part yesterday, I'm now contemplating shipping the GCT back to gateway
and waiting for an ethernet version, or going for bad with my HPNA unit. Im worried gateway might have caught wind of our BBS and is
now making revesions to their mobos (paranoid? maybe.) I'd hate to ship it and get back an ethernet version with no solder pads!! Well, Im also waiting for my HD so I still have time to chew my nails awhile.

GWIZAH,

Removing the header from the build was easy for Gateway's vendor, removing the pads themselves is a major piece of work in spinning the artwork for the bare board. They're not going to waste time or money on it, their pipeline is already full of these things. Working in the assembly industry, this is not an item that they are building to order, contrary to what they want us to think. More likely they're digging the boxes out of the far corner of the warehouse, blowing the dust off and doing final config on the network option along with final test. If one craps out, they delay your order. Based on all the Foxconn components in the unit, I suspect that they built a large initial order without testing at system level and are taking the hit when they config the units for shipping. Been there, done that....

Well, I guess with the BIOS still in limbo and My HD still in transit I might as well just ship it back to gateway and get the ethernet option.

Ok.. I'm new to all of this stuff and have never done any soldering before..

Are there any pictures or step by step instructions for someone like me on how to solder this stuff together? Or would I be better off having someone off of here doing it for me or buying one that has already been soldered?

Just got my digikey parts today. S2208-22-ND fits perfect and the locating pegs are a much needed help for someone without much soldering experience, like me. Got the header in place and am now just waiting to get my harddrive to play some more. Ordered extra headers and would send them out if you want one for $6 shipped, just send me an email, Hippiewan@msn.com. I have seven that I would be willing to part with. The soldering is a little intimidating at first if you are inexperienced, but take a chance, just take your time.

The solder I used had flux in it already. Very simple to use. BUT, I cant get my drive to boot, spins up, no OS booting though. Check out my thread I made about the BadFlash cable.

Also I heard you can mail the mini-pci card to them in a nother thread. No?

Okiedoke, Akeldema, if you'd like me to solder your two units, I'll do it for the $15 per unit I quoted. I'll send email to the yahoo address you mentioned. Let me know sooner than later if you'd still like to go that route.

I've got 10 headers on order, should see them by Wednesday. Anyone else needing soldering, drop me a line at BubbaDog56@ev1.net and let me know. I know I'm charging more than Randy and BigDog, but I need the bucks until I get working again. Your sympathy, support and GTC soldering jobs are greatly appreciated....
