WinME on CF

Is it possible to make WinME fit on the 32MB standard CF? How would you go about doing that? I would like to just use the compactflash because it is silent, and much easier.

Hey Bloinkster, don't want to meddle, but it looks like you let someone down over there:
http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=bnews&Post=410&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=

Back to your question. I've been toying with the idea, but even after "chubby-98liting" WinMe and deleting the install files, I'm still down to about 300megs...The Windows folder alone uses practically 280megs !

this has been brought up before, but does anyone want to work on a group buy on Microdrives? 340 MB drives can be had for around $190 on eBay...i figure with a group buy we can bring that price down to something reasonable...i don't need a HDD in this thing, that's what my network is for...the CF is the best solution, but size of the CF and cost is an issue...i have never attempted to do a group buy and don't really know where to start...i will take any suggestions or offers to help though :)

$190 is more than i want to spend to get this thing working. I saw some 128MB CF cards for $70 after mail in rebate:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=440197
I would think that we could get a fairly decent OS on there with that much space. The webplayer only had 48MB and the 98lite wasn't bad at all, even has internet explorer.

if you want to go Linux you could probably get a pretty good OS in 128MB...but if you want to go windows you pretty much need ME according to those who have installed it...it works better with the transmeta chip...squeezing that to 128MB is probably impossible...though i would think the 340MB Microdive would fit just about any OS need with some tweaking...i don't want to pay $190 either, but a group buy might allow us to bring that price down a good amount

Well emulating the Drivespace 3 (should be in your system tools) trick used by the I-Hacked wizard for the Webplayer DOC, you can achieve a 2:1 compression ratio, so you fitting WinME on a 128mb CF might not be impossible. I'll try doing a 98Lite "micro" install of both WinME and Win98 and see how that goes. For some strange reason, WinME uses MUCH more HD real estate than Win98...

good point on the compression...a micro install might work just right...do you think you could add IE as the browser as well? and ME uses more real estate because it's by Mircrosoft...der... :)

Not taking any credit for the compression, I got it from I-Hacked Man's !
What we can also use is this mini boot disk file system which lets one boot from the CF.
Thinking about the compression, it's really a 3:1 compression when you think of it, since 1/3 is used to store the image and then 2/3 to decompress it, not that it matters much, you end up with approximately twice the size of the uncompressed CF you started with. I'm not sure how the SC3200 chip deals with compression/uncompression.
I'm just surprised WinME would use up twice as much space as Win98 since it's basically the same OS...Another sad example of bloatware...But then what would you say of WinXP that uses almost 1.5gig to install itself !

Here's a progress report on "98Liting" for installation on a CF.
98Micro is up and running with all drivers installed on my HD and weighs in at 115mb with IE, which is fairly equivalent to what "I-Hacked-Man" did for the WP DOC.
Thing is there's no virtual memory and there's not going to be much room left on the CF.
I think a 128mb CF would work.
If anyone's interested I'll upload that image when I'm done.

On another note, 98lite seems to be running OK and I haven't experienced any of the slowness of the full Win98 install for some reason.
It's going to be hard to make WinME fit on there anyway, so it had better work like that !

Just got my Viking 128mb CF from Amazon, so I'll try runnning Win98Lite from the CF tonight.
Anyone tried that alreay in case I run into unexpected problems ?
cheers

Hey Yellow1,
It would be great if you would upload that image, I don't have a machine I can use to setup my own image right now. If not, that's ok.

Ok, well 98:ite is up and running and while it's nice to operate the beast without any HD noise, I'm not entirely convinced of the efficiency of running from a CF.
First thing is that it doesn't make the already sluggish device any faster...since I had to use Drivespace to compress the disks.
The other thing is that some files from my main install can't be compressed (about 30 megs), so that brings down the overall 2:1 ratio down to 1.65. The SWAP file cannot be compressed either, so even if you limit it to 16megs, that's another 32 megs that go down the drain !
All in all, I'm left with about 60 megs to run on, which is probably ok to use it as a basic internet/mp3 streaming device.
If anyone's still interested, I can upload a 62mb .pqi (drive image) over the week-end and you can restore this to your HD and then copy it to a compressed (using Drivespace) 128mb CF.

yellow1 --

Q: Presumably you are using IE on there. Have you considered Opera? I believe the footprint is tremendously smaller.

Q: Are you connecting via ethernet card using DSL or cable?

I'll try to upload by the end of the week-end.

maybe you could convince i-hacked.com to host it on his FTP...i think he has it opened up for uploads, though i would clear it with him first

A small WinME image would be great if possible, I have a MicroDrive I am going to use so space isn't so tight.

here is a site for the upload

ftp www.peteswickedale.com

user: gtc

It's my box, and am willing to host this file.

I've noticed some of you looking for the image on ftp://www.peteswickedale.com

It hasn't been 'put'ed there yet.

I've e-mailed yellow1 to let him know that he can use my box to host the file.
When I notice it there I will post a reply to this thread.

It's not really working to my satisfaction yet.
I originally had it as a Drive Image file too, so I'll convert it to a ZIP.
Stay tuned.

Ok instead of uploading that huge file, I've written a step by step by process which will et you customize Windows to your own specs.

Will the large Microdrives work?

TigerDirect has the 340MB for $229.99 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-Details.asp?sku=M625-1014%20P) and 1GB for a whopping $469.99.

Is it worth the money? With a Gig I could do a lot?

I just need to keep reading I guess.....

I am using a 340MB MicroDrive, works great. Big enough you can live without compression.
