Anyone else having boot problems with a badflash cable?

This might be too early to post but..I spent all day today working on one of my GCT's and I cant get the drive to boot. I installed the digikey header pins perfectly, and added the badflash cable to the pins. the red line hits pin 1 on both drive and board. I can get the drive from my webplayer to spin up, but then I get about 5-6 red chars. in the corner and nothing else happens. The drive works in webplayer. Could it be the cable? I think I might order a true swapped cable tonight, and not one with two connecters. Give me some feedback. Thanks

I used the badflash 2-connector cable and it works fine.

I also got the characters you saw (or at least some characters). Every time I hit a key on the keyboard, I got a new line with the same characters.

It turned out that the problem was...

I forgot to set the drive partition to be active. I put the drive back in my desktop machine as Drive C and used fdisk from a floppy to take care of this. Worked beautifully after that.

I later cut the cable down to 4 or 5 inches. It's still too long, though.

I'm getting the same as wordsmith stated, the little red characters after putting the header on and attaching a known good drive which came out of a i-opener, I will double check the drive on another motherboard, be right back......

Ok, mine is ok....

The IDE cable wasn't plugged in good, one end needed to be pushed down. (I was just trying to treat the new header with TLC!)

Dude, same here! I was scared I might damage something. Then I remembered something, I have 4. So I took a chance, and it works great!

Correct me if I'm wrorg, but is the IDE cable the same setup that is used in the I/O or is a standard cable used to get a HD to work? Mine's on order and i'm getting all of the info I can.

Thanks

Yes, the required cable is the same type used for the IDE interface on the i-0pener.

How is everyone powering the hard drives? I can see using the badflash cable as a connector but have no idea if there is a way or if it even makes sense to try running the hard drive power from the Gateway Touch Pad.

Well if you use a laptop HD, the power comes from the cable !
If you're using a desktop HD- that would have to be temporary anyway, because it won't fit inside the box, then you need to get power from elsewhere. Sorry, can't help with that, but I'm sure others can, take a look at the 5V/12V thread, that might be a good place to start.

With 44pin 2.5 inch drives the power comes through the ide connector.

Low powered, 40 watt, fine tip one and very little caffeine

It makes it easier if you use the keyed header that has the two small tips on the underside, which the mainboard has holes that match up to them.

Some apply rosin on the pads, some are pre-tinning the header before soldering it on. My self, I have been using the solder that's on the pads then I go back over all 44 pins and apply just a little silver solder on the top of the leads and be sure that the solder flows over the top and bottom to assure a good hold to prevent the header from pulling loose when taking the cable off. now when I say I am applying more solder to the contacts, i mean very little!! Too much solder and too much heat will allow the solder to flow across the adjacent pins and the heat can damage the board.

Several threads have discussions of the soldering process (and maybe a bunch of other stuff you need to weed out/ignore). Here's a couple:

I used my weller iron set at 30 watts. Just lined up the guides on the part, held the pins with fine pliers and pushed down on each pin for about 3-4 seconds with the iron tip. work one pin at a time, if you are worried about excessive heat near componens, dont hold the iron for too long. I just got into soldering SMT components (Yeah, I had a Playstation MOD too!) Its really not that difficult. Just take your time, do each pad one at a time and dont use too much solder, Trust me, its much more difficult to bridge pads and have to re-tin them later!

Here's another good link I'd posted a while back in an iO thread:
