Gatewayatwork.com is running an online special on the GCT for $199!!! (plus the outrageous $60 shipping and handling). Follow this link: http://www.gatewayatwork.com/onlineads/touchpad2/index.shtml Though the online ad states that the price can be redeemed at your local Gateway Country store, that's not really correct. When I called the local Gateway Country store to ask about the $199 price, the rep said they were currently listed at the 'new reduced' $499. When I told him that I saw an online ad for the $199 price at gatewayatwork.com, he dug a little deeper. After a bit he came back and said that the original promotion ran out on the 14th of April, but it appeared that they have extended it for an unknown time period. When I mentioned that the online ad said it could be redeemed at a local Gateway Country store, he said that the promo status on his system for the current promo stated that the stores were supposed to refer customers back to the website to order. So I think: 1) The promo is still good, 2) Your order should go through, and 3)I'm going to post this and give Beejay the glory. Why wait for TradeOut if we can land them for $260 (shipping included) from the big GW themselves. I'm also calling back the Gateway Direct Rep tomorrow and ask why the best they can do for 50+ units is $285 + $60s/h if I can buy them individually for $199???? Obviously, this promo could end in a heartbeat, so I'm still chasing the TradeOut deal. I called their Customer Service folks and reported the lack of response from the seller, they said that they would email or call them and remind them of the importance of good communication with potential buyers. (+ mouse and Stylii) The AOL subscription doesn't appear mandatory to me, and in fact there is a sentence in the main page: "The Gateway Connected Touch Pad may be purchased by itself or may be purchased with a Gateway Essential™, Gateway Select™ or Gateway Performance™ desktop system." There's no "offer conditional upon subscription" message. In fact later on...in the TERMS and CONDITIONS page (section on ISP) "You can terminate your account at any time by contacting Gateway" Smacks of early Netpliance and Websurfer messup. Anyway, I don't think Gateway will be too bothered on a product they've obsoleted anyway! One fun note. If you check the "I don't have an email address", the system later tells you that they're going to send you a confirming email! We take something that was supposed to only dial into AOL, add a hard drive (usually) and modify the system to boot up windoze or Linux or BeOS and use it for whatever purpose you want. Booting up Win98 and dialing into any ISP for example. Using it as a second, third or whatever computer on your home lan would be another. or an mp3 player, home automation controller, etc. See the section of the IOpener. We hope to do the same kind of thing with this device. If you are not comfortable with making these kinds of hardware/software changes then this project is not for you. At this point, the only problem I see are the touchscreen drivers. Other than that, advantages over the webplayer (I've got one in my kitchen) would be: 1) MUCH better screen 2) Probably better performance with the Transmetta 3200 at 400mhz. Now this is not equivalent to a PII at 400mhz, but should still be better than the Geode at 200mhz. When my webplayer plays mp3s it pretty much maxes out on CPU usage at 75/80% 3) Interesting form factor as you have the option of turning the base upside down and screw it under a cabinet. Hard to explain but you see what I mean... Now if someone can come up with touchscreen drivers, this is going to be a hard deal to beat ! PS - As I mentioned previously, I've been able to run a version of an alternative OS off the CF with touchscreen working.
