Hard drive caddy in the GTC

I was rumaging trhough my box O' parts and came across a hard drive caddy out of an old Gateway Solo and then I looked at the small door on back of the GCT and guess what? Without the modem and shielding installed the the caddy fits perfectly! The small screw that retains it even lines up perfectly to the existing screw hole that holds the door on.

If I could only remember what model of Solo the caddy came out of, I could make a swappable drive bay for the GTC. That would come in handy!

You don't think that at one time Gateway was thinking about putting a hard drive in it??

You know, that might be. Thats really cool because it would make everything much easier. Although I got my 8.45mm drive in fine, on top of the BIOS and CMOS battery. Dont froget to elec. tape the drive! heh. ZAP

Well I think Im going to keep my HPNA model after all. Since it has a modem on the card I can just chuck the extra one out and mount my 9.5 drive in there. Have to figure out what to do about the modem stand though.....Question. Will Codeman be making an I-M...I mean a Touch-MOD for this thing? Looks do-able, at least if you get the IDE soldered on.

How about it codeman?

With the help from my friend Mr Dremel Tool and the sacrifice of one Gateway Solo hard drive caddy; I have made a functional hard drive bracket. Took the modem out and used the four posts as anchors.

I will get pictures out in a couple days!!

BigDog,

I'd also like to see pix and a part #, I did something similar without the caddy but might find your soultion a little more 'elegant'. I nipped away part of the stand bracket above the standalone modem area, and also in the door area, and have been able to get a 12.5mm drive mounted under the shield and can access the drive connection through the door.

I'll try to get some pix of my mods up on Yahoo today/tonight, the Kodak camera I borrowed is both crappy (493x373 in 'high' mode!) & cranky to d/l. Got a pretty nice Agfa cl20 on the way for a sweet price, 1.3megapix and USB will be a huge improvement....

I have no idea what model the caddy's I have are, all I know they came out of a Gateway Solo notebook. Give me a couple hours I will get pictures out....

Fyi they are simple caddys, the plus about them is that they are a simple metal case somewhat like the compaq ones but open on top.

I will take a picture and perhaps some can figure out which model it is.....

A while back I purchased a box of caddies for a rediculous price. I don't think it was eBay. I'll go down and check the return address on box. They are nice little boxes and will take different depth drives. Back in a sec.

WELL I'LL BE ..... SURPRISE, SURPRISE!!!!! Guess what I found in the bottom of the box that I had totally forgotten about????? An external MicroCD Portable Slimline USB CD-Rom Drive 24X. ONE BIG WOW!!!!!!

I have the Sales Slip... came from Computer Geeks (everyone should know this but) http://www.computergeeks.com

The caddies are

IBM Notebook Adapter (metal top) - 19mm
Part nmber 205-9235

On the caddie label are numbers
FRU P/N45H8791
ASM P/N11J8138
11J8140

$1.75 each

Bottom and sides (base or turned the other way top, I guess) are a black plastic. Top (or maybe bottom) is shiney metal totally covered with a label that feels like electrical tape. Inside is a shield of some type ... probably to go between the metal and drive. There is a little metal flip down wire type handle on one end.

I orginally purchased these for neatly mounting notebook hd's on the out side of "toys" but will probably use some inside.

Hope this helps. Really can't beat the price if one is willing to do some mods.

BigDog, can you pull the drive out through the door? If you can't get a grip on it maybe some sort of tab (like on the metal bar on the IBM laptop drive cases) would help.

That looks like it was meant to be there.

No, but that's what I had in mind the first time, however I would have needed the mating socket for the caddy.

The drive is attached to the caddy with 4 screws and the caddy is attached to the 4 mounting modem posts by 4 addtional screws.

I couldn't find the mating connecter for the caddy, but I'n going to keep surfing ebay for an dead notebook chassis that might work, the problem is most have the HD connecter attached to the notebook mainboard and would require re-engineering.

BigDog,

It looks like the 44 pin female HD connector at the back of the caddy is through-hole, right? Just take one of your extra 44 pin surface mount headers and solder it to the female connector pins sticking through the back of the caddy board. Then you can plug the ribbon cable from the GTC header into the added header on the back of the caddy without hassling with trying to find the mating laptop connector. The drive will be removeable, and you'll have one less header to solder on someone's system, hehehe....

The connecter on the orginal caddy was 44 pin on one side and and edge blade on the other, it's not straight through 44 pin 2mm, It was meant to mate with the docking connecter on the Solo, it took me a couple times to read and understand what you were referring to.

Unfortunatly I haven't seen any thing like that yet. I am going to keep an eye out for dead notebook chasiss's but the they usually don't come with the mating caddy, you have got to find that elsewere.

Finally got some pix up of my shield/case mods that let me mount a 12.5mm HD in the area vacated by the unneeded modem, and allows access to the drive connector through the 'mystery door'....

I ended up putting the drive I have (9.5mm) on the rf shield. the shield bowed slightly when I re-attached it to the case, but the outside case doesn't look any different at all. The cable I made is one thats a little longer then it should be, but it works and you don't have to remove anything. The cable length makes a difference as mine folds over is a 'S' pattern. If you have a larger drive then it might be harder to do with out a little more modification of the shield.
Chaos, panic, and disorder... My work here is almost done...
