Question about Home PNA

Has anyone seen such a network before ?
The reason I'm asking is that the machine's definitely got a Network (RJ-45 ?) as well as RJ-11 (?) for the modem.
Now wouldn't it make sense for Home PNA to use RJ-11 connectors if you're going to plug them into your phone "network" ?
Just a thought.

most of the homePNA adapter chips double as 10/100 adapter chips.. do we know what chip this thing uses? pegasus, kwath?? what?

Someone with a NT-150 I think it was turned its HPNA-like networking into ethernet. Aparently the parts themselves cost more than the whole machine, somewhere in the range of $50-$90. If it's not on this board somewhere, that machine has a dedicated website that I cannot recall at the moment...

Does anybody know what the chance of using a USB/ethernet adapter is?

Will the USB ports be recognizable by Win98?
Will they work with devices other than HID (mouse, keyboard)?

what makes you think USB adapters wouldn't work in Win98 ?!

I have no reason to think the USB ports won't work under Win98.

However, I'll feel more confident about it when someone is able to confirm that they're there. With a system like this, I'll always leave room for some unusual, proprietary hardware until I know better.

Also, some other straight-from-the-box machines only talk about connecting mice and keyboards (HID devices) to their USB ports. Although I do not know for sure, I'd imagine that it's possible to build HID-only controllers into the machine.

However, at the Gateway site, I believe they refer to mice, keyboards, and printers with other devices available in the future (CD-RW). So, I assume they're not crippled.

I'm trying to plan ahead a bit here. If I can only get an HPNA machine, I'll need to rig an ethernet connection. Personally, I don't care about the modem.

I came across a few things relating to HPNA that I thought I'd pass on.

1) You can daisy-chain HPNA adapters. You don't need to use a star configuration like ethernet.

2) It looks like you don't have to actually plug it into the real phone line anywhere. You can just daisy-chain machines. This is according to Linksys documentation.

3) Linksys makes a bridge to connect HPNA networks to 10/100 ethernet (also with a WAN port for cable/DSL but no firewall): HPB200. It's only $164 :( Price is buy.com but seems typical.

Comparison with ethernet in Gateway box:
I think the Gateway ethernet card is 10M (not 10/100).
A usb to ethernet adapter will get 8Mbps (on 10baseT) or 12Mbps on 10/100 using Linksys adapters.
HPNA is nominally 10Mbps (I think) but that's shared bandwith which ethernet through a switch wouldn't be.

i really wanted to tell that guy he was asking stupid questions but i am new around these parts...what was bugging me was that he would ask the same question over and over and over

yeah, well it was really becoming a pain...

Anyway, I opened up the DW and found that the HPNA is lodged in the miniPC slot and has the following markings:
"RTL8139CL
07193S1
029b TAIWAN"

Looks like a Realtek chipset to me...and it is: http://www.realtek.com.tw/htm/products/cn/rtl8139c.htm
It seems to be a standard Ethernet chip ?!
I wonder if GW actually have to do drop in a miniPC Ethernet card to convert it from HPNA to Ethernet.
I'm beginning to wonder if it's not a simple software reconfiguration...

The software angle is something I mused about in the thread I started the other day that nobody bothered to reply to.

Of course, I should have put it in this thread instead of starting a new one - so I hope nobody ever bothers to reply to that one.

Can't wait to get mine so I can start playing too.

Hey yellow1 maybe the HPNA adapter just requires a diffrent socket for ethernet. Figure that gateway would hate to get stuck with 5000 HPNA Touchpads, and 5000 Ethernet. Okay, maybe Im am idiot since I havent even received mine yet.
