Very Cool!! I saw a bunch of them at C.City. And guess what. It has this printed on the price tag.."AOL service through end-user" I.e. You subsribe to AOL, not use. They are $199.99 if anyone cares. I will soon, but Im having a ball with the Gateway Connected Touch Pads.

>> no exp slots (1 pci but not populated)

Does this mean that there is a slot on the MB, but no way to use it because there is not a cutout in the case? (In which case a bit of PCI card or case surgery might allow for a NIC.) Or does this mean that there are traces on the MB but no physical slot and hardware?

Can you provide any details on the video chip? Are there Linux or Windows drivers which will allow us to use the video goodies for our own purposes? Is it video in a window only or can it also do video overlay(*)?

Can you post any pictures of the guts?

BTW, for you other curious types, go to www.philipsusa.com and search on WVH111. You'll get the spec sheet with a picture of the back of the unit. The user manual is a broken link.

Here's the spec sheet:
http://www.philipsusa.com/specs/Internet/wvh111.pdf

And the broken link (in case they fix it) to the manual:
http://www.philipsusa.com/om/wvh111.pdf

Many Thanks,
Gern.

(*) more precisely-- video with alpha blended computer generated images/text on top, apologies for the bad description.

Codeman,

Any chance this box can run a flavor of windows? Or Citrix?
I have an application that drives my Sony CD jukebox -(from Nirvis systems..).
I'm looking for a unit that has the following characteristics:

1.Runs windows
2.IR keyboard/mouse
3. NTSC out
4. cheap

The phillips box looks promising.... except for the memory.
Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I just got mine on Saturday... openbox special at C.C.- $49! Haven't tried it yet... I will tomorrow. I have a Flash which works on the Allwell 3036N... it probably works on the AOL/TV.

Well I dropped in my Linux distro in the AOL/TV and it hangs on boot... gets to "found disk image at ..." and then hangs. It would appear to be a (lack of) memory problem. Good news is that the AOL stuff works (well, boots anyway) so the box does work. I guess I should try a stripped down kernel since this puppy only has 8MB. I gues that will have to wait since I just got my ThinkNIC HD adapter!

I have been seeing different configuration on this thing and was wondering if someone can clear it up. The following is from philips

"The WVH111 AOL TV has a 166Mhz-processor w/ 12Mb of memory. It includes a 5.1G Hard Drive, parallel port, SmartCard and 56K modem. The WVH111 includes a wireless keyboard and universal remote control."

I have seen this thing listed as 8 megs of ram and including a 4 gig drive. Is 4 megs of the memory being used for the video???

Also, can someone post pictures of the insides.

I've collected a bunch of info about this box on my site -- http://www.geocities.com/shavenwarthog/aoltv/ , click Notes.

Most of the material was grabbed from this BBS or the NT-150 lists. Some material I havent seen elsewhere, like links to AOL's AOLTV developer information, plus some newbie info on how to pull up interesting info off the hard drive.

Now, if I could get my #$! Linux machine to come back up, I would play with my new toy!

Is this a candidate as a DOS box with two serial ports?

I have a need for a low power box running DOS but it must have 2 serial ports.

This has three COM ports:

* the modem.
* configured for ir mode. used for the keyboard and mouse.
* a third one appears to be available but the header does not exist on the motherboard. their is a place for a connector next to the io chip, but it has only three pins: rx, tx, and gnd.

In short, I don't think it'll fit your needs.

This txt will explain how to get free msntv service using the one plan without using msn
as a service provider (isp). This method is for first time registration users. This may
also work if you already have an account but I haven't tried it yet. Feel free to modify
this method to work for already registered users. This method can be usefull in "many"
ways. For one, many of us like the isp we are using now and even though msntv does take
money off for using your own isp there is nothing like getting it for free. Some cerdit
on this goes to a friend of mine MoneyMan.

When registering for a new msntv account you will be asked if you have a @msn.com
account, choose yes. It will ask you for a promotion code at some point, you'll want
to enter in "freemsn". Then continue to finsih registration. When done your box will
need to redial and you will be brought to a screen that ask's you for your msn user
name and password. What you want to do here is enter in a "fake" user name and pass.

For example:
user name: MSTVforFree
password: freemsntv
put whatever you want!

Now your box will dial the 1800# and then hang up and try to connect to your fake
msn account. What you do here after connection has failed is power off the box.
Now while box is powered off hit your options button 3X and enter in the
numbers 32768 the lights should blink. Now hit options 3x again and enter in
the numbers 217 and power on the box. You should be brought to a phone
settings/options page. Click on ISP Settings and now fill in the info of
you real isp. For the isp name I would put MSN don't know if it makes a
difference or not but it looks better lol. Once you have entered in the correct
info of your real isp click on Done and then connect. You should now connect to your
msntv account using your isp and free of charge!

I believe this method works because msntv doesn't validate if it's a real msn account
until "after" you finish registration and try to connect, allowing you then fool the
system into letting you use any isp with the one plan.

Enjoy!
