New AOL-TV, Drive does not show partition in DOS.

Just got the new toy. Not bad for $29. Now to get some use.

My major goal is a MP3 server. Hence I need the audio. For now just
to boot something.

Anyway, I removed the hard drive and popped it in my Win98 machine and it
does not show a partition under FDISK. I thought VXworks was loaded or
is it in a flash disk?

Is it safe just to go ahead and fdisk and install 98 it or will I ever be
able to get back to the AOL-TV VXworks OS?

Thanks
Max

So far I think the only way to backup the drive so you can restore the original software later is to put the drive in a Linux box and backup using DD.

I'm not really sure that the processor will be fast enough to decode MP3's. I would like to do this as well but it may require overclocking the chip.

The partition table doesn't show up under DOS or Windows even though it is there on the HD. You can backup the software on the HD by using Linux with the DD command or using DOLLY(sp) from DOS. Once backup and compress, it takes roughly about 13 Megs of space. I prefer the Linux way, since it can be compress at the same time as it is being imaged out.

There is a second way to restore the AOLTV software if you FDISK and didn't do the backup. Let the AOLTV dial home and download the software in recovery mode. This is ok as long as the AOLTV service is in business so I recommend you backup your own drive before playing with the system.

MP3 decoding should be ok, although I doubt this would be a good choice in Win98 (memory & CPU). This would be better in either DOS, Linux, QNX, etc... as these don't use too much resource. Haven't had any luck install anything but DOS on this thing so far, although some others have been able to get win98 installed just fine. Might be my particular version.

Well,

I used Dolly to backup my disk. I hope it works as did a FDISK immediately afterwards.
I suppose its not too bad. If it ends up as a paper wieght, I have spent more on beer
on a Friday.

I then formatted with /s. Alas all I get is a flashing cursor. Must one have the VGA
hack in place for DOS?

I also tried a Compact Flash card with Linux and DOS with the same results.

For confirmations, can someone tell me if this is correct:

White connector (4 pin) labeled 1801 near the VS0024AF chip is the keyboard and
the unpopulated connector (6 pin) location labeled 1151 is the VGA port.

Also anyone know what the 10 pin connector location the hard drive is?

Thanks
Max

You are correct about the connectors for the keyboard and VGA.

I was able to boot DOS without the BIOS hack in place. I don't really have an idea why you are just getting a blink cursor assuming you FDISK'd and formatted properly.

I see the blinking cursor on the TV display. I do not have a VGA monitor connected yet.
I will reinvestigate the disk this weekend. I also was not able to boot it from a USB
connect diskette drive (TEAC). others have reported the same results.

Well, I had not set the partition as active. I did that and my K6-2 boots the drive but
the AOL now shows Invalid System Disk.

Any ideas anyone?

Also the heatsink on the PS is LIVE!

Well, I have tried a HD with a CD just fine. For some reason, I never even thought of using 2 HD. Would be worth a test.
