Com Port Investigation, IR Keyboard

Well, since I got DOS loaded, I loaded PCPLUS.

The IR Keyboard is on COM2. It seems to respond best at 9600, 8N1.
ANyway at that setting, a control M (is that carriage return or linefeed? my brain is foggy)from
the PS2 keyboard returns "7?2?9 Nov 12 1999 16:28:55 TW/SM ? 0 " where I can't read the ? on
my LCD display. Hitting a key on the IR keyboard sends a string of characters to PCPLUS. Now
just to figure out the protocol. The IR keyboard is autorepeating and the control key does
not send.

Also, "mode co40" in dos just blanks the screen. Seems the chipset does not have a 40 column mode.
Would be hand on TV.

If you get into setup by using Ctrl-Shift-Mute (or Ctrl-Shift-F12 using a normal keyboard), you'll see that the same date/time is given next to the label 8051.

The AOL motherboard has a P89C52U which is a derivative of the of the 8051. It is my guess that the code on this chip is interpretting the infrared signals and converting them to serial data. I've previously seen application notes for doing just this with the 8051. They suggest connecting the serial port of the 8051 to the serial port of the PC to do the transfer.

I think at least some of the settings you are using are correct, but something is may still be incorrect. The setup screen lists 2a9 Nov 12 1999 16:28:55 TW/SN. I'm not sure what you mean by not being able to read some of the letters, but the "a" in "2a9" you are listing as a ?

Haven't found any prebuilt drivers to interface

Mevanson,

Yep I tried again with it hooked to a 25 inch TV and it is a
"a" there. I could not read it on a smalled screen. The other
characters are the ansi graphics it appears.

I can not get the modem to react. Which com port is it on?
I would assume it has be to initialized or is one of those dumb
Win only modems?

ok, so i finally got a aol-tv. got dos working just fine. tried to install win 98, but it installed, but then on the first reboot, gave me a blinking cursor, and nothing else.... anyone have any idea how to fix this?

ok, onto the real message, was thinking the best way to handle the keyboard issue would be to install a winLIRC (or LIRC for linux) program or derivitave on the AOL-TV. this converts serial port data to key strokes, and whatnot. http://www.lirc.org

i got the remote working on my desktop in windows with a packardbell IR reciever (eww.) but the keyboard would never send the same code consistantly, it seemed random. i used girder http://www.girder.nl as it is kind of easy to use (acutally, its hugely annoying)

I do not know what the system requirements are for these programs, like i said, windows 98 failed me.

Best route would be to make up the config file for the keyboard on a regualar pc, then just worry about the receiver config file on the AOL-TV. I will keep trying to make progress with it, but any help or ideas or anything from you guys who have worked on this beast for monthes, would be most appriciated.

I am still waiting to get my aoltv from the auction, and was wondering if anyone got any further with this? I looked at girder and it looks to me like it could in fact be used to map the keyboard.

Has anyone tried anything with the other paritys/stop bits etc...
