USB Port Under DOS - Works!

New MessageUSB Port Under DOS - Works! (modified 0 times) pdp1145

I have installed DOS on my AOL for now (using a PS2 keyboard). One of the disadvantages of the
system is no removeable storage. I have found a DOS driver which enables the USB port for storage
devices:

http://www.pocketec.net/downloads.taf?f=pockey1DosDrivers&_UserReference=7F00000146B4C4B614D828F1D5113D79382F

It is by Cypress Semiconductor Corporation.

I have used it with the AOL-TV successfully with:

IOMEGA Fotoshow (should be the same as a IOMEGA 250 ZIP)
IOMEGA USB CD-RW (CD-ROM mode only)

I have been unsuccess with:

TEAC USB Floppy
Lexar USB enable Compact Flash.

I will keep trying thing.
Now if I can find a DOS driver for the sound chip.

chrisintx,

Well the simplest method and maybe the only method is to remove the hard drive and install it in another
computer (normal PC) and install DOS in the regular fashion (fdisk, format/s etc).

Of course by doing so, you trash the AOL software and VXworks OS. Hence you also lose the IR keybaord and
thus must install the PS2 keyboard connector (see other threads for pinouts etc.)

If you have other questions, by all means ask.

Question: What have other been using for the Keyboard connecter? I carved down a floppy power connecter.

I'm using an old connector from a cd drive audio cable on the MB side and a female ps2 connector cut off of an extra cue cat I had kicking around. For anyone interested, the pinout for this adaptor is as follows:

MB ---------- Hacked Cue Cat Cable ( just the 6" section that the keyboard plugs into, cut at the Y)

1 - Data ---- Red
2 - Ground -- Bare
3 = Clock --- Black
4 - +5V ----- Brown

How do I get to the bios setup to make sure harddrive is set up properly?

You can not get into the BIOS at the moment. Look in the "Flashing the Bios" for details. Since you lost the
AOL software, you could try to put DOS or LINUX on it. Also another thread mentioned that there is a way for you
to have it call out to get the software.

Hey All,

Found another interesting DOS program:

http://mpxplay.cjb.net

Download the version for DOS 6.0. It is a MP3 player and apparently supports the sound chip on the AOL-TV.
I installed it and it plays fine except the volume level seems quite low even when I raise it on the software
to full level. Maybe I am over looking something. Anyhow it is a start.

It detects it as either a SB16 or SB Pro.
I am not sure if it is setting the volume correctly.

Can you post your config.sys? The USB drivers hangs on loading. I've installed DR-DOS v7.03 but can't get USB working.

Hey TempestII

Its just a 1 liner at this point:

device=duse.exe ver=1 dri=1 sec=2048

Here's my Autoexec:

c:©ommand\MSCDEX /D:USBCDROM /S /M:15 /V
path=c:;c:©ommand;c:\utils
doskey

It loads fine. Sometimes it comes back to a Dos Prompt
oth times I have to hit the return KEY. What are you using
on the USB point?

I am using the DOS from WIn98 SE. Have not tried DR-DOS yet.
Has anyone else got the SOund going in DOS? I am interested
if anyone else has the low volume problem I am having.

I'm trying to use a USB Floppy. I did get MPXPlay working and the audio is really low. I was going to try and load the Sound Blaster drivers but I'm having a problem w/their download que not working.

I do have it working w/a cd-rom as slave. If we can get this thing to boot from floppy I want to try and get QNX loaded.

If you would like to try DR-DOS you can download the disks at http://www.drdos.net

"I'm trying to use a USB Floppy. "

I have not had any success with my Ination/Teac USB floppy. Just USB Zip drive and USB CD-ROM.

"I did get MPXPlay working and the audio is really low."

I am wondering if its a hardware issue. Like a imedance mismatch or something. I am thinking about adding a
small pre-amp. Are you going to try the Sound blaster DOS files or WIndows files?

I believe to get it to boot from anything else is going to require a BIOS change. Question: Could one try
loading something like the MaxBlast software to install a BIOS patch so we could boot from other
devices?

I had downloaded the disks for DR DOS but since the MS DOS worked, I had not tried it.

Thanks
Max

I'm thinking the floppy needs to supply it's own power and not pull from the USB port. If this is the case then a powered hub might work.

I don't think it's a hardware issue since the sound is fine w/the AOLtv software. I'm going to try and load the SB drivers for DOS.

I'm sure we'll need a working BIOS to boot from another device. There are a couple of people on this board who have made some progress w/decompiling and reflashing the BIOS. But at this point in time there isn't a working edit module.

If we could just get access the to the file system I'm sure we could find a wealth of information w/the existing software. Too bad we don't have anyone that could write a driver to mount the VxWorks partition under another OS.

I just tried my TEAC floppy with a powered hub. No dice. Also with both the floppy and the Zip drive
plugged in at boot, DUSE will not recognize the ZIP drive.

I have never tried the AOL software. Good to know the hardware is fine.

anyone have any luck using a mouse under dos? I have tried 2 USB DOS mouse drivers, uhci and ohci, but neither of them would detect a usb mouse. A mouse would be really useful.. but i cannot figure out a way to do it.

GFXPULSE,

Which drivers have you tried? Where did you get them? I have not tried any non-mass storage devices
yet.

uhci.exe and ohci.exe

i guess you can get them from http://service4.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/97dacc5430d93f2d85256aa300536849/6e10c78f0331e92a88256af70082ba46?OpenDocument

but i did not get them from there, i cannot find the site, so i am unsure if those are the same files. i tried them both with various USB mouses, optical and not.

anyone have any luck? please post it.

thanks

TempestII, pdp1145, and others using MPXPLAY --

What command line parameters and quality of MP3s are you using?

I'm not sure that I'm getting the program to work. I certainly don't hear anything, but it could be because of the TV I've got it plugged into.

Also, the responsiveness of the program is not that great (not that I expected much better). Is that the behaviour that you are experiencing?

Thanks

mevanson,

I have not gotten any sound out of the RF port just the RCA audio ports.

I have played with the command line options but it autodetects my AOLTV
OK. The volume level is low even at the highest setting. I figure we
need to set registers on the chipset for the RF sound to work and to raise
the volume level.

I believe I used:

mpxplay -scs SB16 -scv 100

If they are RCA jacks, arent they just standard line-out values? The adjustment should be made on the amplifier you are connected to.

My aoltv shipped today...fed ex ground... cant wait to play

Digilexic,

The preamp setting internal to the AOLTV is too low with the MPXPLAY. Others report its fine with
the AOL software. Its so low either with the volume set to max on the MPXPLAY one can not get decent
volume. I have it hooked to a DJ style amp with 300 watts/channel and a 100watt amp sub woofer. I
can cheat and get the necessary volume by going into the Phonon input but there I have too much noise.
