I have installed many distros on my aolTV and found them to work quite fine.
The only place where I found trouble was umsdos booting. Saying most distros work is a pretty sharp contrast to what others have said but every non umsdos distro I have installed worked. Slack 7, 8.1, 9; Deb 3, 2.2; RH 6.2, 7; Suse 7.1. Now I installed these by sticking the HDD inside another machine doing a minimal install, or close to it, and then tweaking to my satification inside the aolTV itself. I like Slack 8.1 it suits my needs because it has good usb net driver support with the 2.4.18 kernel. Of course you could use earilier distro and upgrade the kernel. :) One of my aolTVs makes a great Samba fileshare.

How far did you get with the install? Do you have the keyboard working? Is your NIC a PCI or USB based unit? Are you using the NTSC video out, or consoling into the box? Do you have the sound working? Do you have X-Windows operating?

I don't remember which distros I tested with vga and which I tested with the composite but slack 8.1 definately works with the composite out. I used the vesa frame buffer and no frame buffer. I am using usb nics and I haven't played with the IRKbd. XFree86 does work with vesa but I don't have a mouse setup and I don't know how to use the extended keyboard functions to setup the 10key as cursor control.
