well, long story short, we might have a good candidate for our aging aoltv units.

http://www.geexbox.org
(super light linux distro. that's a media player, avi, mpeg, xvid?, divx?)

Someone PLEASE check this out and let me know. I think it's a good fit. The hardware in the aoltv is solid, there will obviously need to be customization as the remote, keyboard, etc... won't be compatiable out the the box.

This would be great if I could get it to work. I'd love some help, but I'm going to get geexbox going on a regular PC first, then try to bring it to my aoltv since the aoltv has the remote, keybaord, etc..

damn, i wish i knew more about linux!

Initial attempts to boot GeeXBox on a 40 gig. drive has been unsuccessful. The AOLTV boots up, but hangs at the boot loader. I will try installing GeeXBox w/o the boot loader and see if I'm more successful. I may need to solder the keyboard header.

Now did you just try to run the base CD. I was reading the list of unsupported controllers and it seems that we may need to recompile support in for the MediaGX. Below is the list of unsupported drivers. If I get a chance, I may take a look at this. It seems like it would be perfect, abit the need for a little modificaiton,

"- Unsupported controllers : Compaq Triflex, Cyrix CS5510/20 MediaGX, National SCx200, ServerWorks OSB4/CSB5/CSB6, Tekram TRM290."

Now, if I can only get it booting from a CD drive. It seems that it can be done as noted on one of the other thread. Just need to get the information on what needs to be modified in the BIOS for this.

kNiTe-oWl,

I just installed GeexBox using another machine and moved the drive over. As for the re-compiling, I got lost quick in Linux. As it stands, I'm missing something, not sure what.

I have to start packing everything up as we're selling our house, and moving. Maybe over the next few months someone can take a look and add onto this.
