The I-opener is gone from Circuit City's website.
No internet appliances for sale.

No info on I-opener.

The last of the IOs at CC?

I think so, you can go buy the store demo model in any store now, $79.95, great deal, and no pressure for TOS, I got one yesterday, and called another store...

Sod, I-Opener is still on the circuit city website. Go to http://www.circuitcity.com then click on "Computers and Peripherals" then click on "Internet Appliances" and the first thing to pop up is the I-opener.

I went in today to the Circus City in Fairfield, CA and tried to buy one. I was informed that they DON'T have them in stock and I'll have to order one, and they further explained that this (order setup) was so I would have to get the monthly service (TOS). He said if I didn't get the service within the required time period that I'd be billed something like $700. I left, without an I-Opener. Oh well.

On another topic, NPLI stock is up $1.38. Don't know what that means, but thought I'd pass it along.

Oh that's a strange mixed signal. I went to the link above for Circus City just to verify I had the navigational instructions correct, and noticed there are two links for internet appliances, one under the "Shop for" heading and the other under the "Learn About" heading. If you click on the one under the "Shop for" heading Sod is correct that it says no internet appliances are for sale (which is total rubbish). If you click on the one under the "Learn About" heading it takes you to the info on I-Opener. Maybe the Circus City floor jockey I talked to didn't know what was going on.

No, it has been cancelled by Circuit City, even on the web site. If you do click "Computers and Peripherals" and then "Internet Appliances," you're taken to a "Basics" page with some information. Then click the link that says "I-OPENER INTERNET TERMINAL" and you hit a dead-end. That page has been removed from the site. Moreover, it's been removed from the site search engine as well, leaving no way to buy it online.

When I visited our local Circuit City store tonight (Knoxville, TN), the manager confirmed that they had been notified that the unit was no longer in the product line. And, interestingly, he sold me the demo unit for $79.95, no TOS, no questions asked. In fact, I told him my intention was to put a hard drive in the unit, and he was quite jovial about it, acknowledging that he'd heard it was quite fun to do, etc.

When I asked why Circuit City was no longer representing Netpliance on the retail front, he seemed not to know the reason, although he agreed that the company has had some difficulty identifying its audience, settling upon pricing and service requirements (i.e., TOS), and with delivering product. He also remembered the advertising campaigns we'd seen during the past year with some disdain, saying, "They would take out a few national ads. We would have 5 units on hand or less. But we'd field 50 calls and have to turn the business away."

Well, that's my report from the mid-south.

UPDATE - Circuit City to get IO 2001

A CircuitCity.com toll-free salesperson (1-877-932-2225) just told me that they have cleared their existing Netpliance i-opener stock. However, he did say that they HAVE NOT discontinued carrying the Netpliance line and that the new "i-opener 2001" product will be in stores and on the web site when it is released. He added that this will occur "in the next month or two" and that the item "has some minor improvements." This certainly bodes well for Netpliance vis-a-vis their retail presence. I'm wondering what the "minor improvements" are, though, other than the higher price point of $399 and the addition of "i-Chimes" instant messaging (per Netpliance.com). Faster processor? Even harder to hack? Better multimedia support? None of the above? Stay tuned.

I've been watching the CircuitCity web site for a few weeks. None of the stores here in VA have had any I-openers in stock. I signed up for email notification for In Stock status. I just recieved email from CC that the I-opener is back in stock, but as you know, the web site hasn't been updated yet. Give CC a day or so.

Pre-orders will apparently still be filled according the the folks that I talked to. Gotta hand it ti Netpliance, they sure know how to blow themselves out of the water...

Hope Compusa & CC get hazardous duty pay for carrying this thing.

Subject: Dear Consumer,

Thank you for submitting your inquiry at CircuitCity.com.

The amount of I-opener's that were shipped to Circuit City from Netpliance
were minimal compared to the demand from customers for this product. When
this product was entered into our systems inventory it automatically sent
out Back In Stock Notifications nationwide. Unfortunately, Circuit City had
more customers request back in stock notifications than I-openers available
which in turn led to the product selling out in a short time.

At this time Circuit City does not have a time frame for the next shipment
of I-openers from the manufacturer. If you wish to contact Netpliance
directly you may do so at 1-800-467-3637 with any additional questions you
might have about the product.
Sorry for any inconvenience this might of caused you.

I appreciate your visiting Circuit City On-line and hope we have the
opportunity to serve your consumer electronics and home appliance needs in
the future.

Sincerely,

Thomas Mish

This may or may not be true. I bought the last one in my hometown store today (floor model) for $74.00. An employee knocked off $10.00 cause he couldn't find the manual. :) He went on to say they are backorder most of the time, and he thought they would be back in stock but the price raised to $299.00. Who knows for sure. All I know is I got a sweet deal... Now I'm looking around for an IDE cable locally.

Score! Went into local CC, asked for manager then asked for demo it was broken from use. He is going to return that one, but had another that was on a rain check with no deposit and tried to contact customer for 2 months. It's dated 5/11 - $99 no TOS he said he doesn't care what I do with it. Had him check wherehouse stock, none.
Hey Netpliance lurkers: We talked a while about how dumb and out of touch corporate execs are, he said that CC was able to move millions of products like this and blew it by freaking out over maybe 3000 that were hacked.
Go try to get one, it's worth it and the timing is right for leftover orders.
