Interesting.

When I first started using Oracle about 2.5 years ago my company sent me to
Oracle DBA training classes taught by Oracle Corp. It was there that I first heard
of Larry Ellison's dream of putting these appliances in everyone's home. My instructor
compared it to cell phones saying "In the beginning you had to pay $1,000.00 for a cell
phone but now they practically give them away and you pay for the service".

I'm really surprised that Oracle Corp. is so slow since Ellison was probably one of the
first people to come up with this idea.

Actually there was a java-based net appliance by Oracle a few years back, but it was $900 or something, and it flopped. Looks like Ellison, who's net worth still might be greater than Gates', is having another go at it.

New MessageRE:New Oracle Web Appliance (modified 0 times) cool
Good stuff! some of the better points: (my comments)

So the operating system is on the Internet?
No. System software is on the NIC's built-in CD-ROM.

How much does the NIC cost and what does
that include?
At this time, the NIC can only be purchased for donation to a school. We are offering a special price to the Help Us Help campaign of $376 for a complete donation package.

What kind of processor is in the NIC?
The current NIC includes a 266MHz Pentium-class CPU, made by Cyrix.

How much memory does it have?
The NIC ships with 64MB of memory. It comes in the form of one 64MB SDRAM Module.

What operating system does the NIC run?
The core operating system is based on Linux 2.2.15.

(YES!!!!)

Which web browser does it use?
The NIC uses Netscape Navigator 4.72. In the future, it will run Mozilla (Netscape 6)

(NO IE !!!! YES !!!!!!)

What type of window manager system does the
NIC use? X window 3.6+

Can I connect a printer directly to the NIC?
Yes. There are two USB ports on the NIC. Customers canconnect USB printers once drivers are available. The correct driver support or network printer support will be there as well.

What resolutions does the video support?
The NIC displays at 1024 x 768 resolution with 16.7 million colors.

Where can I save files?
There is no local hard disk, but NIC users can save information to their network server or to a capable third-party storage system, such as X-Drive.

(can you say IDE ?)

Can I add software to the NIC?
Since there is no hard drive, there is no way to add additional software on your own. However, there will be software updates available via CD-ROM.

(did you know there are people called hackers out there?)

Is there a floppy drive?
No.

(see hackers above)

How does NIC integrate with my existing
network?
The NIC comes with 10/100 baseT network circuitry for connection to your LAN with support for configuring proxy server settings.

Demolinux (demolinux.org) will run from CD and would be useful to probe the thing. superant.com has their version (Expert Linux) with a variety of extra goodies if you don't want to download Demolinux.Good minimalist Linux links too.I have heard earlier versions of Slackware and SuSE can run live from CD but do not know which ones.Anyone have that info? Bootable CDs could be a fast way to tailor these units to user preference.I don't have enough knowledge to burn one one yet, but supposedly DOS will boot from CD too.

Fail or succeed, anything that adds to my choice of hardware is good. It has a winmodem of the PCTel type, so those drivers will need to be added to any alternate distro. Anyone got photos of this things internals?

Get real; most schools in my district use Mac's. What Oracle should be offering is a cheap portable that kids can take home with them; imagine a cover for the screen on the IO and you get the picture. Might even include a carrying bag of some sort. Now that would be cool.

Oh joy, booting from the net......

Seriously, the market penetration for broadband is still absurdly low for this to be a consumer device. Nothing like having _all_ your data fowing across the internet for anyone to sniff.
Don't know, can se this being a decent semi-dumb terminal, might be good for small-mid sized companies trying to avoid
having to set up a real tech support dept.

Simply pull from box, plug in, adjust a setting to get on the corporate lan, and thats it. No hard drives to go bad, in fact no really serviceable parts at all.

Hmm, maybe.....

'Course for us, I think we could find a use for it :)

The distro they use may be worth investigating. I'd like to eventually have a customized bootable live CD that I can take anywhere, stuff in pretty much any PC, and connect to my choice of ISP. If any of ya get a copy of the distro please post.

Larry Ellison mentioned in a press conference today that the NIC will be available July 4th, and will have free Internet access provided by NetZero. This news bit got lost in the "Oracle spies on Microsoft allies" story though.

The bidding activity is already pretty active, although still low. What does everyone think one of these things is worth? I mean from the technical aspect, not from the "first kid on the block to have one" factor.

Space,

Don't know what kind of space is between your ears, but perhaps you can back up your claim? They are NOT available yet. Check their website thinknic and I think you'll see they aren't selling them yet.
Also, when there are idiots willing to pay $610 (latest as of right now) on Amazon for a device! why would they start selling them?

Please check your facts before posting.

Actually I think that the thing is for sale now, if you go to the FAQ you will see that they took out the statement about donating it...

I don't know if it said this the other day or not, but gr8_brit needs to chill.

Also acording top the FAQ the machine now supports "800 x 600 resolution with 65,536 million colors." Wow 65,536 million colors? Thats 65 billion colors :) It looks like the forgot to take out the "million" because 65,536 is 16 bit color. I wonder if they changed to video controller or if they just changed the settings in the setup on the CD.

Also you can check out the news.com article http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-2236126.html?st.ne.1002.ots.ni

SNIP

Although analysts have questioned the ultimate viability of Larry Ellison's network computer venture, the first 10 of the new devices sold for a hefty $1,650 each in an auction on Amazon.com today.

Eight of the individually numbered "limited edition" computers from New Internet Computer Company went to a single bidder, the head of WebOS, a Columbia, Md.-based software company looking to market a Web-based computer operating system.

and...

Meanwhile, NICC began selling the $199 mass-market versions of the New Internet Computer, along with $129 monitors, from its Web site.

END

Also, in regards to:

Get over yourself... and lighten up a little.

hhmmm.... Right to reply time?

At the time of the post by space, the units were NOT for sale on their web site.

I posted the 'check your facts' because 'breaking news' it wasn't. It was factually incorrect.

However, events have passed by, and NIC *ARE* now selling the units (and I have one on order!).

As for chilling out, I am. It was a statement made at the time (which has now passed).

Also, I can't believe how stupid some people are! $1650 each when you could have paid $329 direct!!! And in fact NIC *did* open the order book BEFORE the auction completed! I'm surprised the amazon auction didn't have more than the two withdrawals it showed.

Guess we'll see some Larry Ellison autographs on the web at $1500 each soon?

Can't wait to see what I can do with this thing.

OK, an update for anyone else who's ordered one.

Shipments will begin July 20th.

The order status page will *not* provide you any useful info 'til then.

Just so others know.

I think people in Great Britain need to get over themselves.

They also need to leave that horrible English grammar behind:

"and NIC *ARE* now selling the units"... should be "and NIC *IS* now selling the units"...

The company is a singular entity. Regardless, you see the Brits using "ARE" in this manner all the time.

Actually, I enjoy berating the English. They are such an uptight breed that it serves them right to die from their own medicine.

Dear Wankme,

Thankyou for your kind correction to my grammatical error. You are obviously someone who listened carefully at school and studied hard.

I only post to this board with useful information and answers to peoples questions, if I feel I can be of help. I'm not into personal flaming, or put downs (except maybe one?).

I will say that I do feel that manners cost nothing, and perhaps some Americans can learn from that. The world is a much nicer place when people are respectful of each other. I also feel its a shame that this board seems to be a flame magnet these days. It would be nice to actually have a set of adults using this formum in the manner to which Ken started it.

I remain hopeful that I can contribute to the furthering of technical knowledge this board can offer to the rest of the world. I only wish others could see the value in that too.

Regards,

gr8_brit

I was curious about the size of the base unit, so I sent an email to the customer service link off their web site -- and I actually got a response. Here's what they said about its size.

>>The NIC is a rather small box. Its dimensions are 11" x 9.75" x 2.25". When the feet (the stand to hold the NIC upright) are added on, the height of the NIC becomes roughly 11.5".<<

For comparison, the BookPC is supposed to be 12" by 10.75" by 3.25".
