A company called NadaPC is
marketing a compact device that combines television, the Internet and a DVD player and that is meant more for the
kitchen than the home office.

The picture at http://www.nadapc.com looks a lot like the old Macintosh Color Classic, complete with 9-inch picture tube.

Did any of you ever sign up for the contest to supposedly win a free imac on freemac.com? If you don't know about it, then here is what it was. I think there was supposed to be a drawing and they were giving away free imacs and it was supposed to be sometime last year. Well I kept checking out the site and it never changed.....until now. I got my email telling me how to get my free nadapc and it said it was from the freemac mailing list. Also if you go to freemac.com now it takes you to....you guessed it....nadapc.com
So in the end all they are giving away is a somewhat look alike and somewhat free mac. Go figure

$700 worth of commitment for what is probably an inferior portal just to get the box seems a little steep to me. A scovery with a hauppauge usp widget, dvd decoder software, sound card, a dvd drive, and a 450 mhz amd processor, 20 gig hard drive, and a cheap monitor is 120 + 50 + 50 + 10 +35 + 80 + 100 = less than 490 outlay for the same capability and then a whole lot more. granted you don't have their isp servce, but then again you probably don't want it...

Think it's more like $790- the question is what is the ISP like and eventually will DSL service be available. Also keep in mind that this is a compact form factor with a wireless keyboard and a remote control best thing for a kitchen or a "nook" (god I miss my i-opener). I think it's great to be able to use the ISP from other computers without a network... if there is a money back policy I think I'll bite just to see how the unit looks and works- with any luck they will go belly up and I'll be free... I can hack away at the thing as long as I use the ISP and if it's crap I'll bail out early. I was happy to get a good look at the "Virgin Webplayer" then sent it back when it turned out that it's screen was washed out.
