FREE BarCode Scanner
Goto Radio Shack & ask for the CueCat
It plugs into the PS/2 Keyboard Port & has a connector for the keyboard to plug into.
It Scans UPC A & UPC E Codes, UPS Tracking Labels. (Plus ???)
It is a self contained Stand Alone Unit that outputs the information as if it came from the Keyboard.

2 versions have been seen.
Cat no. 68-1965 ( small nose, 2 screws)
Cat no. 68-1965-A (black trim, big nose, 4 screws)
Internally they are Very Different,
But the Output is the Same.
The 2 Screw seems to be the First Samples??? & are the Scarcer???
a USB version is due out in November

Here is a sample scan of the example UPC in the manual. The UPC is "6 91839 00001 1" and when scanned with the Cue:C.A.T you get ".????????????????????????.fHmc.DxPYE3b6C3nZC3jY.". The 24 question marks are some type of serial number so I have replaced it with the question marks. The last string of numbers between the periods is the encoded UPC. First we divided it up into groups of four characters giving us "DxPY E3b6 C3nZ C3jY". Using the above table each group translates into a set of three numbers "691 839 000 011" which gives you the original UPC. I used the actual QueCat to enter these strings into this message. It does not matter which direction you scan the UPC. It always comes out the same even if held upside down.

RE:Free Stuff (modified 0 times) Skidmark

starfish's explanation of how to decrypt the barcode was not very clear, so i will elaborate on it.

here is an example barcode that i scanned:
.C3nZC3nZC3nYCxfZE3b0CxnX.fHmc.C3T0ENz7DNTZDNf2.

the periods mark the different parts of the encrypted barcode:
group 1 = C3nZC3nZC3nYCxfZE3b0CxnX
group 2 = fHmc
group 3 = C3T0ENz7DNTZDNf2

group 1 is the serial number of the cuecat scanner (i reformated it for easy decoding):
C3 n Z C3 n Z C3 n Y Cx f Z E3 b 0 Cx n X

use this chart to decode it:

1 2 3

0 C3 n Z
1 CN j Y
2 Cx f X
3 Ch b W
4 D3 D 3
5 DN z 2
6 Dx v 1
7 Dh r 0
8 E3 T 7
9 EN P 6

so this: C3 n Z C3 n Z C3 n Y Cx f Z E3 b 0 Cx n X
is this: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 2 2 3 8 3 7 2 0 2 reformated for easy reading as serial number: 000000001223837202

group 2 is the barcode type

There is more to these bar codes. I just scanned a can of Caffeine Free Diet Coke (UPC is 04992903). The CueCat gave me .XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.fHmg.C3D6ENf6CW.

The fHmg says it's a "UCC UPC-E". The C3D6ENf6 matches the first six digits (049929) in the UPC, but then we are left with CW, which should represent the final two digits (03) in the UPC.

I tried scanning the can about 20 times in every direction to see if it was a bad scan, and always got the same result.

More :cue :cat fun:

It doesn't seem to like my I-Opener... Haven't tried it hooked up directly, but through the PS/2 splitter it renders the keyboard inoperable. Oh well, wasn't going to use it with my IO anyway.

I plugged the decoding scheme from this thread into a VB program for Windows, so you can have fun with the :Cue :Cat without installing their Big Brother-ware. As the last poster has mentioned, the decoding scheme doesn't work on beverages that I've tried it on either, so it may not be complete... If someone figures the whole thing out, I'll update the program.

Just for the sake of mentioning it, this program AND post was authored on my I-Opener... :)

http://members.aol.com/amdinside/catcrack.exe

You'll need vbrun300.dll, possibly a few VBX's and maybe some voodoo magic to get this to run - I just wanted to get something put together quickly. If it says you need runtime files, you'll probably be able to find them easily on any major search engine.

I'm going to recompile it in VB5 as soon as I get VB5 installed. In the meantime, I finished an addon to it that allows editing the UPC conversion template, so it is possible to make changes to the decoding without having to recompile the program. The new version is at the same URL, only it's now a self-extracting EXE containing the program, the runtime file, the UPC.DAT template and a readme file. :)

As for it not liking my I-Opener, I've got a v2 that is still stock (besides the hard drive and FAN mod) with 32MB RAM and the 200MHz Winchip, who knows. Anyone else with a v2 I-Opener have :cue :cat problems?

Your problem with the CueCat is probably due to you using a stock IO keyboard.

I would suggest getting a laptop PS/2 y-splitter for Keyboard and Mouse and connecting the CC to that and then the keyboard to the CC.

Am I right?

The problem with the :Cue :Cat on the I-Opener turned out to be the keyboard I was using... No, not the stock keyboard (I got rid of that keyboard a long time ago), an AT/XT autoswitch keyboard. My guess is that the :Cat drains a lot of power and was fooling the keyboard into starting in the wrong mode. With a standard AT-only keyboard, the :Cue :Cat worked fine.

I did find something else that the cat does not work on, my old 486 laptop... It just gets totally garbled scans and makes the laptop beep furiously. Oh well, it was free, can't really complain.

Yet another Cat update:

It has REALLY been hacked now - it's a Base64 + Xor67 scheme. Check out http://www.wizkid.org/cuecat The CatNip program is pretty damn good, and it doesn't need a runtime.

There are version differences:
Okay, so the I-Opener isn't the only thing that has been changing. So far, I've found two different cat versions.

Going by RadioShack's scheme of product updates (adding a letter after the catalong number), the original cat is is...

68-1965
It has a white nose, only 1 LED, and two screws on the bottom. Even though this is an older version, this is the preferable one to have. It is MUCH more accurate and picks up scans very easily. It also works with older systems and has no trouble with my 486 laptop.

68-1965a
This is the one I was using originally. It has a black nose, 2 VERY BRIGHT LEDs, and four screws on the bottom. It seems to send text faster than the old version, but this causes problems on slow systems. More annoyingly, this version of the cat is very bad at picking up barcodes and you frequently have to re-scan.

I just updated :Cat :Cracker, available at http://members.aol.com/amdinside/catcrack.exe the program now has the ability to decode using modified Base64. How is it modified? Well, here's the dirty little secret... The :Cue :Cat has the case of the letters "flipped". Ex: "a" is really "A" and vise versa "A" is really "a", and so forth. In order to do a Base64 decode from the :Cue :Cat you either can use a broken Base64 decoder, or you can flip the case on the letters before decoding them. This program uses the later method. After the Base64 conversion, each character must be converted to its ASCII number and Xor 67'ed, then converted back into a standard character.

For those of you looking to make your own apps, I'll break it down without needing to give out source code:

Take a :Cue :Cat string:

.C3nZC3nZC3nYCNv6Dhb3CxnX.fHmc.C3DWC3nZCxn3D3zZ.

Split it on the "."'s

Flip the case, ie:
C3DWC3nZCxn3D3zZ
becomes:
c3dwc3NzcXN3d3Zz

Base64 decode it!
http://www.catalyst.com/ has a free module for both 16 and 32-bit languages! It's in the SocketWrench package.

Xor 67 each character:

Do a loop that converts each character to its ASCII value, Xor 67 that value, then convert the ASCII value back to a character.

And THAT'S IT! Great, now DigitalButtwads will definitly sue me... =P

Okay, the 32-bit version is done! Weighing in at 2.3MB, it's a hefty download thanks to Micro$oft's runtime crap.

http://members.hometown.aol.com/_ht_a/cyrixcmu/catcrk32.exe

It now features the feature everyone hoped I'd feature... BACKGROUND DECODING! This program can now intercept and squelch the scan data (without needing focus!) and spew the decoded data into your app however you desire.

Yes, this means you can use the :Cue :Cat in your favorate database app or wordprocessor or web browser to scan barcodes in for whatever reason. Enjoy!

And for a change of pace, if you long for the good 'ol days of DOS - you're in luck!

http://members.aol.com/amdinside/cuedos.exe

A nice SMALL decoder for DOS! Yep, it may not have the appeal of its windows siblings, but just imagine the look on your friends' faces when they see your old 286 with a :Cue :Cat attached... :)

A *BIG* thankyou to cyrixone!!! And from one software developer to another...
...catCrack is a work of art, very well done. I've been using catcrack for the past 2 days with DVD Profiler (Intervocative's free DVD cataloging software). It works nearly perfectly. The 32-bit version even works nicer!

I have to requests:

1) It appears that some applications (DVDProfiler) only read/use the middle 10 digits of the upc code, but catcrack reports 12 digits. There is a small digit way off to the left, and another way off to the right of the barcode. Is there currently a way in catcrack32 to use the middle 10? Or could it be enhanced to offer this option?

2) Could you post a brief message over in the DVDTalk forum regarding catcrack? There are quite a few DVD collectors who are starting to use DVD Profiler and could benefit from the program. As an alternative, if you post an acceptable link and description *HERE*, I'll post that info over on DVDTalk. (I didn't think that it was proper to go posting links over in DVDTalk to this BB or to your file without permission.)

In any event, thanks again for the great work already done.

A fellow DVDTalker eh ??? ..... isn't the cuecat great for entering DVD info to DVDProfiler ????

Does DVDProfiler recognize ALL the UPC codes that you scanned in ??? It sometimes rejects the UPC code if it includes the check digits (you know, those two small numbers at the beginning and the end of the code).

to sracer:

Without modifying the application, there is a way to get it to "edit" the output. The "Auto Convert" function of :Cat :Cracker 32 actually features macro capability, you could set it to the command:

<BARCODE>{BACKSPACE}{HOME}{DELETE}{END}

And that would chop off the first and last character of the barcode when it is placed in a standard edit field. I haven't tried this in the DVD database app you mention (I don't have it), but I don't see why it wouldn't work. If you need it to hit enter after all that, don't forget to add the {ENTER}

As for linking/distributing the program - go right ahead... It's freely distributable, all I ask is it not be sold or included as part of a commercial product.

Base64 encoding has to do with shifting bits around and is pretty well documented (and annoyingly difficult to understand if you're me and can't understand binary -> ASCII conversion) I just cheated and used a free decoder module from catalyst.com as the heart of the conversion process.

The Xor 67 fits in like this:

Character -> ASCII Code -> Xor67 -> Character

It is done on a per character basis on the string that the Base64 decoder returns.

As for user-defined text (assuming test was a typo) strings, there is no reason you can't get a barcode font and use alpha characters in your own printed barcodes. I tried it myself and it decoded fine. The wizkid.org/cuecat page has a good link to a barcode font site.

Need a free source of bar code stickers? the US Post Office has them... All their Insurance and package tracking forms have adhesive backed 20 digit barcodes on them. I have used one with CATCRACK.EXE to setup a 'secure' password. When I scan the barcode, catcrack feeds out a character string plus the 20 digit number from the bar code slip. Since I don't send the CueCar ID or Barcode type, I can use any CueCat to get the same password. (So I don't have to worry about my cuecat breaking).

Cyrixone or anyone....
Can someone create a multipurpose ascii to hex/ hex to ascii program.
We need a easy to use convertor program using the Hex and ascii values.

I imported a hex/ascii list into crack32. I received some mumbo jumbo that did nothing.
As simple as cuecat was, a hex/ascii convertor program should be just as easy.

Here are numerous ascii/hex tables as reference: http://www.gator.net/~garyg/C/MISC/numconv.html
http://claymore.engineer.gvsu.edu/eod/refer/units/units-4.html
http://www-oss.fnal.gov/~mengel/Ascii_Chart.html
http://www.komlamb.com/Technical/ASCII.htm
http://www.sutron.com/products/reference/conversions/ascii.htm
http://www.jimprice.com/jim-asc.htm

Here are some examples of simple working ascii/hex convertors:
http://javascript.internet.com/equivalents/ascii-engine.html (even has the source code)
http://www.mit.edu/people/jmorash/conv.html
http://javascript.internet.com/passwords/ascii-encryption.html (encrypted ascii)

This is the prime example of a good coder:
http://www.paradigm.nu/ascii2hex/ascii2hex.htm

I'm asking for a windows based hex/ascii convertor that can easily translate a sentence of ascii code to hex, then visa versa. This has nothing to do with cuecat. Just a stand alone program that I can type some hex or ascii code and receive the converted values in either hex or ascii.

Basically, cut the Dout trace from the 93C46 serial EEPROM, and the CPU will see all 1s instead of the stored serial number data.

Woah, that program on eBay looks like it is a clone of my program! I downloaded it to check it out and it does seem VERY similar to my program; I'd venture to say even the readme.txt was ripped off. It is using the same OCX files as my program, but it wouldn't be hard for someone to clone my program with them. The OCX files ARE the decoding and keyboard hooking engine. But I never gave the source code out and I did make it blatently obvious how my program worked (nor was it that complex of a program).... I wouldn't be too surprised if someone cloned it feature-for-feature. Looks like he/she only got $10.50 for it, and probably DigitalButtfsckers attention. Oh well, live and let live.

I don't know about trashing his/her eBay account, but I AM going to write an e-mail asking about the similarities between that program and mine.

I have declawed (no serial) and neutered (decryption on) the 05A00, and adjusted the scanning speed by turning the potentiometer all the way counter-clockwise. This GREATLY improved scanning reliability and made it a lot easier to use.

By default the potentiometer on my 05A00 and 07A00 were both adjusted midway. Turning it all the way clockwise made it stop scanning on both. The 07A00 I adjusted has been declawed, the other 07A00 hasn't. I have a harder time getting my stock 07A00 to scan as easily as the adjusted one.

Anyone seen the cuecat barcodes in the latest issue of wired? It's a wierd slanted barcode that scans in fine, but gives me wierd output. Here's one I scanned:

Raw scan: ".<serial #>.aabI.y2nGy2yi."
Value, according to CatCrack and my own program: " # %K"

Anyone else seen these codes or have any idea what they are?

I don't know how many of you know but there exists a free Internet UPC database.

Draz, I've also noticed that the only barcode my neutered :cats (per http://air-soldier.com/~cuecat/hardware-decrypt/cuecat_mods.html) *won't* read are the DC "cues". It's too sweet...

Hey Profile, those are the 'new' bar codes created by Digital Convergence (the CueCat Mfr) for use in their catalog efforts. You will find a sample one in the CueCat paperwork that came with the reader. It is also the type of bar code used in the Radio Shack catalog. I haven't tried reading one with my neutered cat.

My cat will read them - thats evident from the fact that it sends the encrypted barcode. It's just decoding them. Im using the Base 64 xor 67 setup and am getting those wierd symbols instead of numbers. I was just wondering if anyone knows how to decode those, or if they're supposed to come out like that.

I see your point, Draz. I meant that the scans don't come out as ASCII. The ones I've tried to scan all do have a "#" in the output. Contrary to UPC barcodes (and my own printed 3of9 "messages"--I've been able to scan strings as long as my full name), they don't scan repeatably (even for the gibberish I get) with either of my cats.

I'm trying to make my own barcodes using code 39 for the cuecat. However, any barcode i make looses the last one or two pieces. I've tried five or 6 different fonts, and they all have the same problem. Anyone know what's going on?

You can just pick it up at a Radio Shack ???
Is there someone who would like to send one
to me? I don't have a Radio Shack in the
neighborhood. I'll pay any expenses made.
