At the risk of setting off a stampede, this is a heads up on the clearance sale of the Cidco iPhone (corded phone with Windows CE-based 640x480 monochrome LCD touch screen and pull-out keyboard) for $79.90 at Fry's. The unit is designed to be used with ISP service from BigPlanet, but of course, since I posted this info to this board, that is obviously not going to be a permanent state of affairs.

I'll be taking mine apart shortly to see if it is based on the SH-3 or the VR41xx (there are ports of Linux to both), and we'll see if we can get Linux/X going on it like the Compaq IPaq. The form factor is fairly compact, like a small fax machine. The screen is not great, but it is legible. Maybe its innards can be torn out and substituted with an I-Opener's innards. Anyway, I'll post when I've got more information.

OK, I opened it, and it's not worth trying to hack. The build quality is consumer-electronic, not notebook quality - it's several notches below the I-Opener. The most serious problem is that the CPU is a custom system-on-chip ASIC developed by Cidco. The flash chips are soldered, not socketed. There's virtually nothing salvageable in the whole unit. There's absolutely no hope of getting Linux going on it, which leaves the $24.95 a month BigPlanet service as the only option.

The only possible use for the unit is to use it as a prop in the office to impress visitors. The speakerphone, address book and voicemail can be used independently from the Internet access portion, but that's not worth $80, IMHO.

So it's going back tomorrow.
