Since it seems that Epod (the company) went belly up. Does that mean that i can now keep the device without having to pay anything else i.e disconnect my monthly service and if so has anybody been able to modify it in any way?

thanks

They only sold 300 units, so you've got a rarity there. You may be a lone wolf over here with that.

The ePodsOne is hackable. All that is needed are the WCELOAD files that were not provided. Once these files are included in the /epods system/ifc folder and a Hard Reset is performed(without the modem inserted) you will be able to use Activesync to load software. Not all CE software is compatable, but I have succesfully installed Calligrapher and Xaudio as well as a variety of other games including Doom.

The secret files needed are: wceload.exe, asform.dll & ceshell.dll

I could not find the dll's. Maybe someone else knows where to find them.?.?

These are indeed a rare item. I understand that of the 10000 initially ordered only about 250 were sold before ePods went out of business. The remaing 10000 were sent back to the manufacture. A good question is what is being done with those units???

PS if someone is truly interested they should leave their contact information.

I just confirmed that Fingerhut will not enforce a TOS and that they do not turn over billing information to ePods, which by the way is now defunct and does not answer the phone in any case. I just placed an order.

I just ordered an Epod too, these look like they would be really cool with a wireless ethernet card.

(And I hope Fingerhut doesn't try to enforce a TOS :)

Just ordered one. Looks neat. Just curious though. Can it be told to dial another ISP and be totally EPODS free? Is the browser pretty good?

Thanks,

Ok so i threw in a ethernet card into the PC slot. It's one of those megahertz x jack ethernet/modem combo.. It doesnt seem to want to work with the computer.. i am a newbie by the way. I connected to my lan at work but it doesnt seem to work. It says connection not available and then it drops me into the sign in screen to epods.. I really want to change dial -in and everything it's really hard to get a connection with epods and i think they changed my number and everything.. This thing sucks but it's stil very cool. Hopefully you guys can tell me something i dont know.

Yes ethernet cards work in the pod. I definetly will vouch for that. I don't recall the specific type but will work on getting that.

The browser works fairly well as long as your not click(tap) happy. There can only be one instance open at any time, but that is a positive in this case of limited processing power. Links that pop up other windows with the destination don't do anything on this. That is frustrating.

Their is an alternate dialup function. It is a file in the windows directory called terminal or something like that. (I am recalling much of this from a feable memory of mine). It works very much like MS dialup networking.

Files can be transfered using the MS ActiveSync program and the ePodsOne PC Connect program.

The trick as mentioned before is to Hard Reset(hold power button and poke it in the back) the ePodsOne without the modem in the PCMCIA slot. Otherwise the modem will claim the comm port for its own and the serial port won't work.

Here are the steps:
- download, install & run activesync on your PC
- run PC connect from the Programs/Communications directory on the pod
- use the activesync explorer program to copy the files from your PC to the Mobile Device EpodsSystem/IFC directory
- Hard reset the device again

You should be ready to go.

-------
p.s.
the program for dial up is REMNET.exe in the windows directory

OK.. Got one.. How on earth do I get past the logon screen to run PC connect on the EPOD? Is there some sort of magic key combination?

Thanks

zonyl2, can you try the following and let us know if you progressed any?

The code to bypass that screen may be this five-digit string: 31415

I'm not sure which field to try; it may be one or the other or both. This is a third-hand hypothesis, though, but I will eagerly await your reporting back regardless.

Thanks,
Randy

Tried 31415 in the account name field, didnt work. Tried it in the password field (password too short must be 6-10 characters is displayed). Tried it in both fields and same error occurs.

Does the EPOD just hook up to the net via PPP? If so I can have my home PBX reroute the callout to my linux box and authenticate it. I just hope it isnt looking for something else too to come from the dialup. Epod doent do their own ISP'ing do they?

(Pretty desperate, I know)

Does someone know of a existing EPOD account that we can use just to get it past the initial login screen?

I think I got a way to get key strokes to the explorer behind the logon screen (just cant see whats happening cause the login app is staying in the foreground). Can someone tell me exactly what key strokes are needed to run the PC communications app, after hitting the "Files" Icon on the top of the normal epod screen?

Its a long shot but I want to investigate all options.

New MessageRE:Epod's Agreements (modified 0 times) icbloh2o

The logon screen is set as 'topmost' so no matter what you do you won't see anything until this is closed. Function keys do not work on the pod and I am unsure of a closing method besides 'alt-f4'.

As long as the cursor is in a text field(username or password) then try some sort of combination like 51413, 21314,etc.. I know it will work I just don't remember the exact sequence. Please post if you get it.

To avoid this screen you must then create or copy an accounts.txt file to the ePods Sytem/Dialer folder. It is a simple text file with the epodsuser name in it. This can be any name to avoid the first time dialup window.

I put on a usb keyboard and Cntrl-w doesn't work(neither does ESC, Alt-Tab, and Function Key, or SHIFT-ALT-TAB). I fiddled with variations of numbers for the name and password for the last hour or so. If someone who has succeeded would offer another tip or two it would be very much appreciated.

I guess I'm a bit confused. I managed to get passed the login screen. I also managed to download the files into "epods system/ifc" and then perform a hard boot. After recalibrating the screen and setting time, I'm right back at the login screen. When I get through that I'm right back to the epods shell. I sort of expected a different shell after loading ceshell.dll along with the other files.

How do I keep the login screen from coming up?
Once I'm through the login screen should I still be in the epods shell? If not, any idea what I might of done wrong?

Also, I've found www.cemonster.com, but I didn't find a paint program. My 3 year old would die to be able to color on the epod (with approprate adult supervision of course). Does anyone have a recommendation for a paint program?

Thanks

Keith

FEI: We can better organize these discussions in the Epod One discussion area. There is a lot of usefull information there as well and is a more suitable place.
