Just saw the I-opener on sale at Home Shopping Network for $149.85 plus $10.95 s&h. This is the machine configured for use with ATT Worldnet, but no TOS. Claim to have unloaded nearly 15,000 units. The item number is 408-062, if they haven't sold-out.

Here's the details. You can order this via the toll-free number, but not on the HSN.com web site. Call 1-800-247-2868, and ask for item number #408062. The price is $149.85 plus $10.95 shipping plus your state's sales tax. Get 'em while they're there.

I just ordered an I-Opener this morning from Home Shopping Network. Total price came to $171.25. I believe this is due to added sales tax and shipping and handling.

Question - which is the better item - I-Opener or Virgin Webplayer?
How do the screens compare?
If I am an AT&T subscriber, what do I have to do to set up I-Opener to work with WorldNet?
For a similar price, which would you prefer?
Why?

Thanks,
Geno

15,000 unloaded? hummm, anybody else think that sounds like a load of crap? They must be using NPLI's numbers for the quarter?

not knocking the deal here, just the claim...

Actually, Redwood, I'd be surprised if they didn't sell that many. This is fairly typical for product turnover on both HSN and QVC. Go to NYTIMES.COM and search under "Home Shopping Network" for articles detailing their modus operandi. What's sad is that Netpliance didn't discover this effective sales channel sooner.

Geno,
The i-opener has a far better screen than the webplayer although not the best in the world. The Virgin screen is washed out looking and no amount of adjusting brings it to life.
To get either one to work with your ISP you will need to "hack" it. The i-opener is not very difficult- learn how to use the search feature on this bbs for more information there is a treasure trove of it here and if you are willing to do the reading people here will point you in the right direction. Enjoy -will

The IO is very easy to hack. Instead of messing around with your bios and flashing it I recommend getting one from Jack at http://www.badflash.com for about 16 bucks you get a new chip. I ordered the cable, adapter, and chip for about 30 bucks. It got here in 2 days and shipping cost 4 bucks. I suggest getting a jewlers screwdriver set. I went to Radio S***k and picked up a set for 10 bucks. everything you need except a pair of needle nose.

If you are going to put in the preamp out audio mod I suggest getting the fallowing soldering station or better:
Weller WES-50 adjustable temp. and ETS .01mm needle point tip.
You will need a magnifine glass, ultra fine solder, micro fine PCB wire, micro 5v LED, 22O Ohm resisters, .47uf caps 3.5mm stereo female connector, hot glue gun, (all purpose and non conductive) steady hands and a butt load of patience.

Just for fun I added a IDE HDD activity LED.

Websites you will need to get info from:
http://www.linux-hacker.net
http://www.i-hacked.com
http://www.tennmax.com (for the lasana fan)
http://www.the-ctrl-alt-del.com/utilities.htm#VIA (for all your chipset drivers and sound drivers)
http://www.pricewatch.com (for hard drive and memory)
http://www.badflash.com

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's my stats:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Version 4
Hacked Version 5 bios
Rise 266 CPU
64MB SODIMM 144pin PC100
1 working serial port with DB9
lasana 5v fan
external 17GB 3.5" IDE HDD
(this is being swapped for internal 2.5" 3.2GB HDD)
No GOO on the bios

Has anyone received their IO from HSN?

What is the issue regarding the TOS agreement?

If you look at netpliance.com they are still sticking
with their membership agreement.

Do we just ignore what we get in the mail from
netpliance?

What is the most recent news about this topic?

Thanks,

Teksavy

"These are all V5's. There is plenty of info in the tech section on what to do."

True. However, AFAICT, there is no way to make these into MP3 players other than with the USB speaker solutions. Replacing the yamaha with the AD1881 sort of killed that idea off. Or did I miss something?

I bought one from HSN and have 2 more on order; They are V5's - no epoxy, no cut ide pins, You need the V5 modified bios from Badflash to get into setup, it has the Rise Mp6 266 processor, and they come in the new box as the "i-opener 2001 Membership Pak" with a sticker on top of Netappliance's sticker to call a number to activate your At&T Worldnet service.

The number on the box seal is: 1-800-467-3637. I believe that number is for Netpliance, who handles the ATT signup.

trust me the iopener is a rather $$$ hobby. the $150 price tag is just the beginning. expect to pay up to at least $300 total.

when my family immigrated to this country from the fall of our other country, we had no other assets besides the clothes we worn. eating rice and fish sauce wasn't that bad at all as a kid.

after many years of education and development our nuclear and extended families have succeeded carreerwise and financially. Still the rich live like the poor, they are the same. You can only eat so much.. as i would mention this to my friends about Bill Gates.

You do have an advantage being poor and that is the every day life you see you really can come to understand. On the other hand someone who is financially ahead may have been undefinately occupied himself in labor. You'll also have a greater satisfaction in change when you do enjoy better luxuries, as to a rich guy it's just another days things.

With access to the internet you can play stocks. start small, at buyandhold.com you just need $25 minimu deposit, and monthly fee of just $10 for unlimited trades. get started on this financially potentious hobby. this is the kind of hobby that is a win win situation.

the more money i make and create the less i see of it from the higher end things i buy. maybe it's because of age, but i don't see my life being any happier or better than it was when i was a child.

take care.

OK, I just got one; ordered it a week and a half ago. There's a "Membership Agreement" sealed in with the manual that states, simply: Use the service with the box, or send it back to us. If you don't, you won't get your money back and your warranty is void.
I'm really scared now...

I asked if they had any, Julie said "Oh sure, how many would you like?" I asked for 6, the reply was, "Oh. Oh no, that was the last one we have!". I took it.

OK it's now Feb. 7th at 6:30 pm EST. I just called HSN and ordered one for 149.95. After taxes and shipping, it's about 170.00 for a brand new one. After flexpay I was charged 70.55 and will be billed 49.95 for the next 2 months. Get them while they're hot! (And he asked if I wanted the extended protection plan... you think it'll cover a k6-III melting the case? hehehe)

It is now over 10 months to the last post of this thread.
In the mail today, I received a letter from HSN that read:

Dear Valued Customer
This is an important update regarding your purchase of an I-Opener Internet Browser System
from HSN with Internet service provided by AT&T.

HSN has learned that AT&T will no longer offer Internet service to I-Opener customers. We at
HSN realize that this situation causes you, our valued customer, an inconvenience. We have
placed $50 Spendable Ka$h in your account to be used toward holiday purchases with HSN. This
Spendable Ka$h credit is available for the next 30 days. There is no need to return the I-Opener
system or equipment to HSN.
(rest of letter not included here)

I am glad that HSN did this for their valued customers.
Its like free play money to purchase anything HSN has for sale.
$50 credit for each iopener purchased through HSN.
The only downside is that most of what HSN has to purchase as
compensation is pretty lame.

Thanks to dweeb (read post above) I contacted HSN by phone and now have a $50 Spendable Kash credit on my account. I never recieved letter from HSN, but figured if they had offered credit to some customers I'd ask for credit also. I ordered an I-Opener from HSN on 12/17/00, recieved it in January 2001. Don't bother trying to send email on this topic to hsn.com, I tried without luck. The correct customer service number to call is 800-284-3900, have your customer number handy. I told them I had heard of a $50 credit being offered for customers who purchased I-Opener, representative researched it and gave me credit on the spot. I asked about time limit, she said credit good for a year.
