Vestel ( http://www.vestel-usa.com ) is a new manufacturer of Windows CE based MSN Companion internet appliances. They're selling them on eBay now for a flat $250 with no service requirement. The only catch is that the devices only work with MSN (or at least until the IA hackers here unlock it). Here's the press release:
well there is not much to hack !
i have one of these they are just your standard national geode chip board with
2 16mb DOC inside the board size is cool
its small and mounted under the crt and yes it does have a ide port !! just not much room for a HD ..
but i will say the keyboard with the touch pad is cool and it will work with the IO
i will post pic of the inside if any one wants to see it..
Codeman, posting the pics would be great! Quick question -- can you make the unit access the net using ones own ISP without inserting a new hard drive? In other words, can the current OS be altered to bypass access via MSN for use with, for example, Mindspring instead?
I want to buy a I-Mod2 kit from you. Do you have one available? Your website says you are out of stock. When is the ETA? Please let me know. I have the money now in my paypal account.
Looks like all the auctions for them on eBay have closed without one coming close to the reserve price of $250 (closest was $167 with most ending at $77). Too bad no one has made more progress with this. I'm sure the CRT screen is clearer than the washed-out LCDs were seeing on many of these pups.
