I-Opener Ad in Newsweek

New MessageI-Opener Ad in Newsweek (modified 0 times) VivianC
For anyone who missed it, I-Opener is running a full page ad in the latest copy of Newsweek.

They don't mention the TOS, but they say to call the 800 number or go to the website.

Maybe we should write Newsweek an article on how to hack it (own isp, etc) and on how worthless their security is.

That's funny, and here I thought it was illegal to advertise something you don't have in stock.

e. An advertiser should have on hand a sufficient quantity of advertised merchandise to meet reasonably anticipated demands, unless the advertisement
discloses the number of items available or states "while supplies last." If items are available only at certain branches, their specific locations should be
disclosed. The use of "rainchecks" is no justification for inadequate estimates of reasonably anticipated demand.

Actually, they have plenty of them. They just don't want to sell them to us. :o( Hmmm, sounds like discriminatory (sp?) sales practice, doesn't it?

But Goober, it isn't their fault. Remember they were just upgrading the NP-1000 to the NP-1000 during an unexpected Tiawaneese holiday when they had problems with the display unit. They just couldn't get the units built fast enough while they upgrading then recalling units to the factory (the Texas one, not Tiawan). They're getting them to us as fast as they can, thus the frigging $40 FedEx charge. Geez, you'll have it in 7-10 days. They specifically tell you on the website you'll get it in 7-10 days when you place the order. They tell you it'll be 7-10 days when you call back 2 weeks later. They tell you it'll be 7-10 days when you call back after a month. Here it is 6 weeks later and they said it'll be here in 7-10 days.

I suppose you're gonna tell me that a measley $144 MILLION went to their head and they don't feel responsible to live up to their deal or even the laws. A scumbag like that would be walking around thinking they are a Baby-Bill Gates. "I'm frigging rich (on paper), I can change deals and not abide by my half of the terms (until I get caught), AND at the end of a long lunch I can go snoop through peoples internet sessions (assuming anyone IS using their service).

Their $144 Million IPO was in Mid March. The iOpener units we all
have, and have been talking about, are the ones manufactured
prior to the IPO; ie, the ones they have been selling since December, 1999.

They certainly started out with much less money; probably under
$2 million. They used that money to order the surplus Taiwanese
units and get their name and scheme established. With $144M now in the bank, I expect the version 2
of the iOpener to be a much less hackable unit. But who knows?

If the unit is for sale in large volumes, the production has to have
been ramped up in February or March, possibly before the start of
the hacking craze. Translation: the new units may well be
hackable too. Time will tell, and the time is close at hand.

I don't think they said WHEN they would be shipping in large quantities. Probably a month or so from now... after they get the bugs worked out of their new production line. I only wish more hackers were able to get ahold of these babies before NPL pulled the plug.
