It has two National Geode chips (didnt bring the numbers with me)
and a super io chip. I got into the bios and made it boot
from my usb zip drive. I had to jumper two pins that you
can access from the bottem of the unit to make it boot tho...

Can you point me to info on how to put a linux image on the
hda1/sandisk. I used a dos type linux and would rather
it run jailbait. Jailbait seems to be using hdb* where the companion
wants hda* or some other problem.....
The vestel was going to be my next project and Im glad to hear
you already done this.

Sorry this I took so long to reply, anyway.

Press F2 when the unit is powered on, this
will give you the BIOS. Make sure the first
boot device is set to what you are using.
Mow, On the bottem of the unit is a small
square access to a jumper on the motherboard.
You need to jumper the two pins somehow while
the system is reset. this will allow the
unit to boot from a device other than the
sandisk. BTW you will need to prepare the
zip drive, or whatever to boot. I used
Win98 to format the zip drive.
hope this helps you. Ive gottem pretty far
with this and just about have a Linux image to use that supports everything but the e-mail led. Would like to hack the MB and add
an IDE cable, but this may not be worth the risk. If it can be done at all. I still need to read up on the chipset.
anyway, good luck.

I was able to boot on my Zip, but only if I changed the "C" drive as "None", otherwise it would boot into MSN even if the jumper is shorted. Have you been able to boot off the Zip with the C drive defined in the CMOS?

I just bought an IA-1 (by Compaq) on ebay. I've opened it up to a certain degree, trying to get to the BIOS to "clear" it. Is there a way to do this without taking off the grey metal cover (inside the white case)? I've read here about pressing F2 to get to the BIOS, but the IA-1 doesn't have an F2 key.

I just got an eMachines MSN Companion yesterday and had the same problem with the usb zip drive.
The reason it won't boot has nothing to do with a jumper. The usb zip drive hasn't "spun" up in time to be searched for a boot sector.
What ended up working for me was to press [pause/break] while the eMachines logo was displayed, wait for the zip drive to spin up,
and then press [enter]. Booted fine. Now i just need to get jailbait to use /dev/hda.

I got jailbait using /dev/hda, it is too long
to explain here though, so i wrote a long
text file and put it on an ftp server.

the server has the static ip of:
209.173.47.7

log in as
username: lhnet
password: foobar

The file name is jbmsn.txt

I just got a compaq IA-1 MSN companion. This must be a little different than the emachines one. Mine has an AMD k6 266Mhz in a ZIF socket and a cyberblade graphics chip. Out of the box, you can't get into the bios. Opening it up was a little scary. Yes, you have to take off the grey metal shield above the mobo to get at the bios reset jumper. It's right next to the CF slot on the top side of the board. After you take off all the screws that hold the grey shield on, it still wont come off. That giant aluminum heat sink is glued to the uproc. When I first pulled it off there was a big >snap< and I almost crapped my pants, but nothing was damaged. Maybe twisting it a little as you pull will make it come off easier. With that thing off, you can get to the jumper pins. Put the jumper on the other pins, power up, there will be some wierd junk on the screen, then power down. Put the jumper back the way it was and power up again. Now you need to hold down the "compaq" key on the keyboard as it boots up (says "Compaq" in big red letters on the screen). Bang, you should be dumped into the bios config screen. I think the cancel key with the little hand on it is really the esc key, and the other special function keys are mapped to the function keys. Thats as far as I've gotten so far. I guess I need to get a 16MB flash card and get jailbait on it somehow.

I have been thinking about making a connector that goes from the cf slot to an IDE socket so I can use a laptop HD instead of a microdrive. Nobody seems to make one specifically for this purpose. Anybody else ever heard of such a thing? I got a couple of Molex CF headers that I think I'll try to wire up by hand, but those are some tiny leads.

So how have you guys gotten it to boot up on USB? will the BIOS automagically recognize the usb zip drive and boot up, or do you have to load some linux first to support the USB? In my IA-1 BIOS, I can select the boot order to be floppy (?) or HD (?) but I haven't figured out if this translates into "CF slot" and "flashdisk" or if it will go look for USB devices. I might have to beg/borrow/steal a usb zip drive.

Tiger direct has the Compaq IA-1s for $179.99 and the 3COM Audreys for $89.99. Do a search on "appliance" to find em. The IA-1 that TD sells is a refurb but you wouldn't know it from their site. I got mine last night and it had Compaq reseal tape with re-manufactured printed on it. The unit itself is in excellent shape though.

I put in a couple of hours last night on it (yea right, I was fiddlin till 3AM) and have some initial feedback. If your curious, go to the MSN Companion group for a detailed (textual) description of the disassebly and what I've discovered to date.

Note: Others have gotten much farther than I on this, but nobody seems to be posting much on how they got there. Hopefully we can get some more detailed info flowing...

Just a little FYI. The TigerDirect MSN IA-1 models have dropped to $139.99! I got mine (albeit sitting in my closet). Very nice unit. Already had it using a picture for the 'photo frame' which is very cool - but man it's SLOW. I'm using a DLink USB adapter with it without a problem. Works great! The keyboard is SO much better than Audrey, AOL-GTC or iOpener. Love the keyboard!

Check it out at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-Details.asp?sku=C860-IA1

What is the advantage of this machine @$139 over a Virgin Webplayer available on ubid for $79 less a $20 rebate?
Also, how easy is it to reconfigure the MSN Companion for my own ISP?

I'v seen some post's with people doing hard drive hacks to the sandisk. Not easy though, but a lot of wires branching off of the sandisk chip. Technicly it adding a hard drive to the msn companion, will work so long as the chipset supports multi IDE devices on one channel. That being said soon as I recive mine in the mail. I shall be doing a lot of looking into hacking to add a hard drive to the unit. As to the memory, I'd put money on it being upgradable to at least 64mb. Though that would require DESOLDERING. Unless it requires 4chip's each at 16mb in size. to add 64mb. I'll be doing some major research on the devices when I get mine. The one thing I want the thing to have is at least a hard drive. If a hard drive can be added I'd presum it will at least support upto the 8gig range, maby larger with high hopes. Then again I'm guesing cause I have yet to inspect the device. Will make a nice little server some type when I get done with it. Though I'm thinking wireless music box. would look kind of COOL between to big speakers and a hide away power amp.
