Seattle folks: I picked up the last two from SouthCenter last night :)

If this is the same Rand McNally GPS I'm thinking of, it's black and shaped like a computer mouse. I bought this a while back for $90 and it works GREAT on the I-Opener. Included StreetFinder Deluxe software works fine as well.

It has a DB9 connector and a PS/2 plug to get +5V from the keyboard port. Since it only uses GND, TX, RX, and +5V, I connected those lines from the com port mod directly to the IO's (unused) modem jack, and stuck an RJ11 connector on the GPS. Snap the line in and go! (Had I used r_fl_z's RS232 daughterboard, it would have been even easier!)

Some local newspapers had a coupon for $15 off a $50 order at Office Depot, check yours and see. If not, maybe the cashier will simply accept the coupon code #4530. If so, you got a GPS for ~$40 :)

Perplexer:

Yes, that is the one...complete with StreetFinder 2000. Excellent information on the coupon. I heard of a $15 off of $50 coupon, but didn't have the details. I asked at the store, and the manager...a personalbe fellow...said he knew nothing of it, but would honor it if I located the details...which you have kindly supplied. Cha CHING,Thanks.

Bay Area: Sunnyvale (El Camino) is out, as is Mountain View and San Jose (Trimble). Blossom Hill has 1 left.

<rant> Stevens Creek has a ####load of them locked up, but the sales droid there is hoarding them for later resale. He claimed that there were none in stock after pretending to go into the storeroom and checking, but I could see that he was lying. The computer says 50 in stock at Stevens Creek, and there's no way they could all have sold out, even at Geek City USA. I didn't have time to go and hassle his manager, but this guy should be fired.</rant>

Thanks for the heads up, r_fl_z. Couldn't locate a coupon on time, though .

I was drove by the Everett Office Depot so I stopped in (I tried to resist ) and they had 3. My original one was 1999 version so I bought the 2000 version. The updated maps CD and a spare receiver was well worth the $42.27(including tax).

*Belkin serial (PS/2 and DB9) to usb adapter*

Actually the Blossom Hill store HAD 3 of them today. That coupon is great. It is $15 off the price of the item before tax so my total was $40.91 each. The coupon is also good per visit so print as many as you need and just walk out and back in.

I also had checked the Stevens Creek one on Friday and they really don't have any even though the computer lists 50. They spent about 20 minutes looking all over for them even the loading dock. 50 is just too many for such a small store. The one on Los Gatos Blvd also lists 2 in stock but they also could not find them. Their inventory control and entry is not all that good.

This is the same unit I used while in the Philippines and recorded my route as we drove around. (I used the Rand McNally GPS unit with the DeLorme Road Warrior Edition software which includes a world map.)

I think I have a solution if people are still intersted. Go to Bestbuy, mine in Baltimore MD had some. Tell them how much they are @ Office Depot. (I can provide a scan of my receipt if you need it.) and they will price match. :)

If people who are international are intersted I might be interested in helping out. You'd pay all costs and S&H fees.

Hi,
I'd second a request for a scanned receipt or anything which could be used to get a price match... THANKS!

Justme:

I don't have a receipt for you, but once I located the printable coupon, I called and spoke to the store manager. I informed him that I had asked about the discount at the time of purchase, but no one knew about it at the store (which seemed a bit odd). I purchased two of the units anyway. I then found the coupon (thanks to the helpfullness of the folks here), and was able to give him the coupon number. He credited my card for the $30 ($15x2) without hesitation. Good luck :)

I didn't have a coupon neither. At the checkout, I mentioned Coupon #4530, listed by SirDag. The cashier just punched in the number and automatically took the $15 off.

Just tried it today on a P-75 laptop during the commute to work. Initial acquisition took about 10 minutes. At highway speeds, it lags by about 100'(might that may be due to the speed of my laptop). When stopped at an intersection, it placed me right at the intersection.

Thanks for the tips...

Hi,
Found the Scarsdale NY Office Depot had 3 in stock, bought 2. The price was down to $44.88. I'm not sure why the price was lower, perhaps if someone understands how the heck office depot works they'd care to explain. As of late Sunday there was 1 more in stock if anyone's interested (and near Scarsdale NY )

For those that need a quick and easy power adapter for the Rand McNally GPS receiver. Locate an old off board wired PS-2 mouse cable interface with socket from an AT computer motherboard. The kind that is usually next to the parallel port cable on the back slot cover. Clip off the little rectangular plug end on the PS-2 cable assy. that normally plugs on the motherboard. Fab a power pack from a 9v battery (For longer life use 5 or 6 AA batteries *4 may work?*) Lm7805 voltage regulator and a small switch and connect 5V+ to the PS-2 and V- to ground. Vola! I imagine just using 4 AA cells and skip the voltage regulator may work but the V+ will be slightly over tolerance (6.1-6.4 VDC with NEW batteries). A 12v Lighter plug could be used instead of the battery still using the LM7805 voltage reg.
Or one could simply order the voltage adapter from Rand McNally...costs less than $25.
This way one just needs to plug only the DB-9 Data connector into the i-Opener serial port (If you have made prefects or someone elses serial port mod)

I'm running one of these on a Thinkpad P90 with 40mb ram. The program seems to crash frequently, particularly if I'm making turns. It runs ok on the highway....not so well in town. Do you think I'm expecting too much from a P90? The box says it will run on a 486.....any ideas?

As of today, Las Vegas has no more Rand McNally GPS Units. I called all 6 of our stores, and found the only one Vegas had left. The girl at the counter said it was $43.89, but that since I found it on the %30 off table....

Well you do the math....

I will never get lost again, Well as long as my IO does'nt overheat and blow up on me...

No need for special power for the GPS unit. It has been run off anything from 4.5 to 16 volts with no problem. Here is a review with all the details: http://www.gpsnuts.com/myGPS/GPS/Hardware%20reviews/RandMcNally/rand_mcnally_gps.htm

Hit several Seattle area store today, no luck. Southcenter has been out for a week, U-villiage had one with a hold on it (lucky).
SODO had the display box with software but could not find the hardware.

I checked Everett about 2 weeks ago. Everett showed they had 3...I bought one, There may still be one there?
The stores here don't seem to keep very accurate tabs of there inventory so there may be one box still lurking in store lockup somewhere else...

You are correct about stock. I am amazed that they don't seem to know weather they have any or not. I had planned on heading up there today, but with the snow we now have, forget it.
