I know this is not off topic, it applies perfectly!

http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,35747,00.html

"The head of a major Internet consulting firm predicts that many dot-com companies will soon be exposed for what they really are: hollow, half-baked schemes without much hope for long-term success."

"Many of the dot-com CEOs lacked depth, experience, and common business sense,"

"There was a fanatical focus on valuation -- getting public and liquid -- while value -- what the customer eventually gets -- was a back-seat discussion."

"These companies are not built to withstand competition, they're not built to deliver sustained value, and they're not built to last,"

In a sense, the NPLI execs are greedy, however, Netpliance isn't one of those "dot com" startups. They are actually providing a service and hardware, rather than relying mostly on sponsors to make profit.

Netpliance IS planning on making money from sponsors and advertisers.

Not only do they expect you to fork over $22 a month for their service, but they want to log and map all your habits and sell them to the highest bidder.

Their plan also includes controlling what internet sites and services you have ready access to.

Some may notice that Home Depot was one of their sponsor sites, but they had to remove it after it was discovered that the iOpener could not even process the Home Depot web page!

At least NetZero lets you know up front that you will be viewing sponsor ads. And they don't charge $22...
