Right now, at Target, Iopener 2001s are on closeout.

For an INCREDIBLE price of $12.54. Yes, less than $13.

I s h i t you not!

Hurry, get yours before they are gone!

I believe him. I've been watching the Iopeners collecting dust at my local Target, waiting for them to be blown out.

Unfortunately, they still ring up at $299 tonight.

Osuuma, did you buy one? If so, can you scan a receipt and send it to me.
Perhaps I can convince the local Target to match the price.

Buy one? I bought four. All they had.

My mistake, the price was $12.46, not $12.54.

And yes, this is true. Ask and I will email a photo of the four units and the price tag showing $12.46 and the receipt with four entries at $12.46.

Now for the part that sucks. The number on the price tag, the sku was unreadable. The clerk tried several combinations to get it right, but the machine that printed the price tag was bad.

It could be one of the following:

068030122
068737122
868737122

The questionable digits are the first, most likely a zero, the forth and sixth digits look like an incomplete zero, but if a seven is curved, then it could be that.

This is no April fool joke. If you think so, too bad. Like I said, if you want to see the receipt, price tags, and the boxes, post your email.

Osuuma,

I'm not sure I follow you. Which tag was unreadable? Did they price them with little $12.46 stickers?

I just took an Iopener box to one of those scan-it-yourself UPC scanners.
Beep: Iopener $299

I don't understand how the UPC codes could be unreadable. Perhaps the clerk didn't use the UPC code, it is hard to find on the Iopener 2001 box.

In any event, please send me a scan of your recipt. It may help me get a deal like yours! :)

If it's not an April Fools joke then the kid is very confused and fortunate, looks like the cashier was confused too. Anyway if he got a few at that price he should consider himself lucky, but get a grip and don't start a panic if you just took advantage of Targets mistake.

Look,

I am not going to start a flame war, just because you do not believe me.

Maybe I did get lucky. Maybe the folks at Target mis-labled the boxes. If so, they had plenty of options, including from me, to not sell them to me.

I would post the pictures, but how can I do that, will this board host them? I don't think so. I offered to email the pictures to who ever asked. Wesley asked so he got them. I wish him luck is his quest to force a markdown.

It is easier to doubt what I say, consider it an April Fools Joke, and claim that I am confused. It is always easier to criticize.

Sometimes you have to get off your a s s and look around. That is how I stumbled across the great price on these Iopeners. I must have seen them in the target for months, going untouched. Then yesterday they are in a different cabinet, with no price card. I ask the clerk how much and he pulls one out, looks around the box and finds a clearance sticker for $12.46. So what would you do? Yeah, I asked him to check it. I asked if I could purchase all four. He could have said it was the wrong price, or that I could only buy one. His supervisor could have done the same. But they agreed no problem.

If you have sour grapes because you didn't get one at that price, well I am sorry. I don't always get a deal like this. I had to put up with a lot of s h i t from CompUSA just to get two Iopeners a year ago.

Finding a good deal takes being in the right place at the right time. What does that mean? Get out and start looking for deals, don't discredit someone else's good fortune.

I may have seemed anxious in my first post, as I wanted to share the information, in hopes that someone else would get their Iopeners at a cheap price. I didn't have to tell anyone.

And if I wanted to make an April Fools joke, I would certainly have done a better job and made a more convincing post.

If you want to see the pictures, post your email, I will send them to you. Other than that, let the thread die.

Unfortunatly, this guy is playing a prank. I took it upon myself to call 11 target stores in the southern california area. None of wich had the iopener for 13 dollars. I also found the sku# which is 080060500. THey can punch it in and tell you that the price is 99.99 and that its being sent back to the manufacture, like every other store is doing. (including the cc that i work at). That was cruel joke bitch face.

For one the product upc/sku would have to be scanned at the register. An incomplete or wrong SKU entry typically would have to be verified and approved by a Cashier lead or manager before further processing.

The photos are available at

http://y42.photos.yahoo.com/osuuma2001/

And I suspect posts from certain people will state that they are fake.

I think I have done enough. It is not worth my time to continue this thread.

You know I actually went back to another target to find out more, to get the correct sku. You know what, the Iopener UPC is not in the computer. You know why? Because not every Target got them. This is what was told to me by Kathy at the Livermore Target.

I was going to investigate this further, to help those who were trying to get this deal. But after reading the cynicism and personal attacks, I thought "Why bother, the effort is not appreciated and I would not be believed." So I guess the naysayers have won. They put me in my place. I hope they are proud of their achievement.

For those of you who did expend the effort to try to find an Iopener at this price I commend your efforts. I am sorry that you did not get one. With determination, some day you will find a great deal. You just got to keep looking.

I will be contacting Wesley shortly.

My sister inlaw works at a local target and I called her and gave her a product discription and the sku. It took her awhile but she found it discontiued, She checked about a dozen stores in several different states and all came back as discontinued / recalled product. No longer stocked been out of stock for several months. According to her supervisor any product that does not have a clear Barcode(or it is missing),upc code or sku# must be properly identified and approved by manager before selling.

The manager must do a manual overide on the register for the transaction to complete.

The sale as osumma described could of never taken place per corperate policy she states.

Truly an APRIL FOOLS from osuuma....Hope he's satisfied!

...I was just at a Target. They had approximately eight I-Openers for $74.74 each (which is basically 75% off the $300 they were charging for them originally). (They also had one Phillips Magnovox WebTV with wireless keyboard for $70, and 2 or 3 Sony WebTV's w/o keyboard for $100, and an add on keyboard for $20-30 (Yes, I know that doesn't make any sense that the one with keyboard was less than the one without one.)) The price was a special clearance sticker, which is orange, and says "Was $300 Now $74.74" (it wasn't exactly $300...but within a dollar or two). The way Target's clearances work, as far as I can tell, is that when a store has a quantity of a product that ain't selling, they just slap price stickers on them with lower and lower prices (the exact amounts of which are usually odd numbers like $6.78 or $3.42-very weird amounts), until the damned things leave the store-and they seem to drop the prices by even percentages, which results in the weird amounts after awhile. If one store was having an exceptionally hard time selling I-Openers, or for some reason had a lot of them, or wanted them out of the store now (they are reasonably large, taking up a fair amount of shelf space, and up until fairly recently, this Target had a prominent display of them, meaning they possibly had a lot of unsold stock), and since $12.46 times 6 is $74.76, it is possible (although seemingly unlikely) that the price would drop this far. At least the exact figure of the price seems right due to the way Target drops thier price on Clearance items. So I believe the original item.

As for *WHICH* Target store, I'm going to leave that info for a later post. Why??? I am debating about getting one for my mother for it's original purpose, and then I will play with/hack it if/when Netpliance goes completely out of business. I don't want to come back to that Target and find they are all gone because you guys bought them. ^_^ I am strongly leaning towards getting it...I may get it tommorrow. If so, I'll tell you which store. If I decide not to get it, I'll still come back and post the location.

Also, I should point out most stores probably sold out of their I-Openers at the standard price before having to Clearance them to death like this. So the original price of $12.46 only happened at that *ONE* target store.

Hmmm...after I posted, I thought of a couple things to add, since I'm not terribly familar with this community.

First, is Netpliance still in active business? If I do buy the unit, can my mom use it, at least for a few months? Their website is still up, although their plug-your-phone-number-in-and-see-if-you-have-a-local-number thingy is broken.

Second, is $75 a decent price for this thing? If they were selling recently at $100, I guess it's not great, but...

It is a neat device, though. Much better than those Web TVs sitting next to it (ick).

Ok, I bought it. I went back to Target (it's the Riverside, California store on Arlington Avenue) on my lunch break today, and find there are only 4 of the I-Openers left (at $75) (there were also the single Phillips Magnavox WebTV (w/keyboard) for $65, and 2 Sony WebTVs (w/o keyboard, although I think this is version with a card slot or a hard drive or something, WebTV Plus or something) for $100, and 2 keyboards for the Sonys for $25). One is behind the counter on hold, two have the factory seal broken, and one of the two has the word "Display" written on the box. I buy the one with the intact seal. The woman behind the counter kinda laughed when she saw me buy it. She said they just gathered dust when they were priced at $300 when they were up front (complete with the one as a display), so they moved them to the back and cut the price in half, and they still didn't move. So, within the last week, they cut the price in half again, and they started flying out of the door. So, I think there is a huge market for this type of device, provided the initial cost is under $100.

In any case, I take it home, and plug it in...and I can't get the damned thing to work. It boots fine, and tries to connect, but it won't, and gives an error message. You can hear the modem make modem-like noises if you plug a phone into it and listen. So I curse, and go back to Target and do a one-for-one exchange. The two open ones were still on the shelf, although the one on hold seems to have been picked up. I buy the one not marked "Display". When I take it home, it's obvious that it had been partially unwrapped before. Plus, the manual is missing. When I hook it up, it does the exact same thing the first one did.

I think I figured out what is going on. Netpliance switched all the existing customers over to Earthlink at some point, and uploaded software to the existing I-Openers to cause them to call Earthlink's access numbers and not Netpliance's. At some point after that, they shut the main 800 Netpliance number down. So if you buy an unused unit, it calls a number that isn't answered. I called 1-800-IOPENER, and got a recording telling me to call 1-888-IOPENER. So I call 1-888-IOPENER, and it tells me to call during business hours, which fortuantly I can do from work. So I will call tommorrow, and also will call Earthlink to see if they can help. BTW, neither companies website is useful...at all. While the recordings at 1-800-IOPENER and 1-888-IOPENER tell me to look at their website for help, no technical support pages exist any more at that website, at leats not that I could find. Earthlink's site lists a whole bunch of different systems they provide service on, including O/S 2 Warp, 3 other types of Internet computer things, and the Sega Saturn(!), but not the I-Opener, which is *NOT* a good sign.

So, the moral of this story is:

A. You can no longer use a new unit as it is intended to be used (unless there's so trick that Netpliance or Earthlink will tell me tommorrow) and...
B. If you are using the built in QNX, and worried about it "phoning home", don't...the call isn't answered any more.

mmm.. well, that's what we've been saying for a while.. the only IOs that can be used right off are the ones that have a sticker on them saying to call AT&T, their sandisk(flash) was updated to call a different number. not that they're tough to hack or anything.. find a local and get your bios hotflashed, or give badflash a visit and get a replacement/backup.. If you like the original interface, you can put the v2 image on the sandisk and reconfigure it for your own needs.

basically you will need to download the v2 image from freedrive, there is plenty of detail on how to get that image running as a qnx based internet appliance.

First you need to identify what you have.

If you have a v5, you will need to get a bios from badflash.

There are tutorials on here telling how to downgrade the bios for v2-v4

once you have a bootable hard disk use dolly to dump the v2 image to the sandisk.

Hack the v2 image and you're on your way.

Well, after calling Netpliance, they were able to set me up. It looks like the way it's setup now is that their main server/phone number is still hooked up, it's just not accepting unactivated accounts; so you have to activate them over the phone. The guy that I spoke with (after a twenty minute wait on hold) said he only does about one new hookup a day, since they haven't made any new I-Openers since January. He also laughed when I said I only paid $75 for the thing; saying it cost them $500 to make. (Which sounds a little high frankly-$300-400 is probably closer, or they really bleed money until they stopped making them.) I actually had to call twice, because when I first called (also after a twenty minute wait), he wanted the serial number to the thing, and I was at work, so I had to go home and get it. I spoke to the same guy both times. I suspect he might be the only guy that answers the phone. Apparently it takes a day or more to activate the account, so I'll try and see if it works tommorrow evening. Then, the first month or so will be on their network, and then they will send me a letter to transfer me to Earthlink. Oh, and they do have a technical support website, only it's www.iopener.net instead of www.iopener.com, which is basically and ad for the product they don't make any more, and there is no link between the two of them. This, plus the 1-800-IOPENER and 1-888-IOPENER numbers make me wonder if they are trying to confuse people, or they just suck. They probably just suck.

GeoTPF, the transition to Earthlink is already "ancient history", though truly there hasn't been much discussion of this on this board because almost no one here uses (or cares) about Netpliance or their service. Whereever their server(s) are (probably in the same cubicle w/the guy you spoke to in Austin) there are only a few ways to get there:
1. via Earthlink, where everyone was transferred 2 mos ago, or maybe AT&T, unless
2. you were previously accessing Netpliance via your own ISP, whereupon you are charged $9.95/month by Netpliance (does not include the cost of your local ISP)

I have been one of the latter customers (note they are not accepting new clients of this type), effectively paying about $15 for monthly service, the $10 to Netpliance and $5 for a local cheapo ISP. Most (all?) of the customers who have this deal were previously on Netpliance's 800-service and they kicked us all off cuz they wanted to cancel their 800 lines. I'm assuming Netpliance, which is trying to reorganize and stay afloat, is still getting some payment from Earthlink maintaining the Netpliance computers, and from the few remaining of us that have been on local ISPs and send them $10 a month. Now that I think about it, there apparently are some AT&T customers also--maybe this is why Netpliance wasn't able to unload their iopener service altogether--too many partners w/competing interests.

Anyway, given they are in a "death spiral" I'm surprised they let you sign-up for Earthlink service at all, but I suppose you're paying $21.95? I expect that eventually Netpliance will sell their server machines and software lock/stock/barrel, and the best that iopener owners can hope for is that Earthlink or whoever maintains the software platform indefinitely.

I'm further surprised you were able to get thru to anyone there by telephone. Last time I tried it took an hour and a half! I thought the only way to get service or communicate issues was via iopener.net (yeah, what if your machine doesn't work, how do you contact them).

They don't suck; there just are too few people left to even maintain, much less grow, their failed business.

Hi there. I have been unsuccessful in finding i-os for less than $200 or so. If anyone can get them for $75 or so and would be willing to buy one or two of them on my behalf from wherever they can get them and ship them to me, that would rock.

If anyone knows where to find i-os (whatever models) for <$100, please contact me with specific information (even if you're not willing to accept funds, buy it for me, and ship it to me).... mabye I can convince the retail people at the store to do it.

Hehehehe...

I haven't posted another reply because I had given up getting this thing to work. After I set it up, it updated...and then wouldn't connect to the local server. After several more calls (and in fact taking time off work to make one of them), and my Mom finding another I-Opener at that same Target and buying it (because she wanted the manual, basically), and me canceling the old account because the second I-Opener wasn't working, so I set an account on the third I-Opener...and it wasn't working either. It updated, and then wouldn't connect locally. I decided that maybe it was my phone lines. So I went to a friend's house and tried it...and it worked the first time. So I took it home, and unplugged every phone in the house...and it worked. Then I plugged them back in...and the I-Opener was still working. No, that doesn't make any sense, but whatever. It's been a real pain in the ass to get working, but now it is. The last person I talked to on the phone (each time I caled, I talked to a different person) told me that I was to switch over to Earthlink, but didn't know whether or not they would send an e-mail or letter to do so, so told me to call them directly. As for their service sucking and them going out of business...what I have seen of their service is actually quite nice, and more than sufficent for what my mother is going to use it for. I think I might use it occasionally to check the weather and news headlines (which it stores after updating itself, so it doesn't need to connect) without bothering to turn on my computer, or even to surf for a few minutes (instant on). They might go out of business, but even if they do, I suspect there stil will be options for me to use it with another ISP. In any case, this post was made from it after I (finally) got the thing to work.

As for the wait time on their 1-888-NETPLIANCE, I had to call them 5 times in my attempts to get this thing working. The first two times I had a 20-30 min wait. The lastb 3 were answered immediately. Maybe they are gettin fewer technical support calls now that there are fewer brand new Iopeners out there (although I have since seen 2 of them gathering dust at a Best Buy at $300...hehehe...). I don't think that the $10 a month deal was offered to the general public, just people who used the 1-800 sevice and complained, but what do I know?

All I can say is that I found two Philips Web TV units at Target in the LA area for $20 ea complete. THat sort of thing happens, however since it is on clearance no other Target is required to match the price. Cut the guy some slack - curb the jealousy.

cyberhh,

This thread died a while back, don't dig it up. And you couldn't pay me $20 to take a WebTV unit....
