Hey wordsmith, you stole my thunder!!

Well I have some links if anybody wants specific regarding this thing.

Views of the product (doesnt it look just like the "new" I-opener design???)

A cnn article on the device.

A linux devices article describing the device (Yes, it runs Linux!)

Another ZDNET article

Count me in, pending price. I'd be willing to go up to $250-300 range.

America Online Inc. and chip makers Broadcom Corp.
and Transmeta Corp., became the latest PC
manufacturer to enter the Net appliance race.
====
Which Transmeta chip/speed does this use /?

According to the Linux devices article "The Gateway Connected Touch Pad is based on a 400 MHz Transmeta 3200 microprocessor,"

So Im guessing its running at 400Mhz.

Heres a mail I just sent:

>>Greg,

>>Just to let you know I come from a very popular I-Appliance BBS
>>board on turning defunct I-Appliances into working Linux PCs.
>>Perhaps you have heard of the famous I-Opener project? Depending
>>on the price, I might have a person all ready for 400 - 500 units.

>>Could you give me a ball park figure on the pricing for:
>><100 units, 100-250 units, 250-500 units please?

>>As we speak about 10 could be used depending on the price. If its
>>a decient price, there might be a very good sale coming your way
>>depending on what's inside of this machine.

>>Do you have anything pertaining to the insides of this neat little
>>Gateway machine? I.E. Hardware Info like how the OS is installed
>>into it, etc.

>>Thank you ever so much.

>>Mike.

** ALSO, CAN WE KEEP ALL THE COMMENTS, ETC, ON THIS THREAD SO I DONT HAVE TO BOUNCE BACK AND FORTH PLEASE.

Try this reverse phonebook:

That'll give you an idea if it's an unlisted number, a business name, etc.

That guy is smokin' the good stuff if he's looking for those prices for quantity buys. Have patience, let him know when he's really ready to deal to give you a call. It'll be a long time comin' for him to off 1000 of these things on eBay in single unit quantities. He's losing value every day another Internet Appliance hits the streets. The longer he has them, the less they're worth on the market....

WTF? $450? This guy obviously does not know that for $450 (and some hacking skillz) u can get an I-o with a touchscreen running at 450 MHz (or higher) WITH a hard drive! . Tell this guy to check out this BBS and the see what HE says. Think about it:

I-opener: between $99-$150 on Ebay
AMD K6-2: about $35 (if you're lucky you can snag a k6-3 for about $100)
Touchscreen: $150
Various modifications and options $100-$200

All in all you can build a system just as powerful for about $450.

The thing is practical and useful particularly for nonhackers.
The parts alone are worth near that much to hackers.
And I'd be surprised if Gateway let them go much below cost.
They do, after all, have an OK refurb channel of their own

If I had 1000 of these, I would probably hold my price and sit on them for a while.
Toss a few on ebay and look to see where the price settles.
If he's already running a retail business, costs are minimal.
Audreys don't compete in the same ballpark.
If the long-awaited i-openers ever hit the market, I'd re-think.

Hell, look at the prices epods were going for at the height of the fever!

Just in case any one hasn't checked, these things are $499 at gateways website. My guess is that this guy worked out a deal with his local gateway for quantity buys. That's more than likely why he won't come down on his price. Although, it says AOL subscription required. Not sure exactly what that means.

Well, it looks like someone picked that one up at eBay for $250.
So either that's a scam or his price will come down quite a bit (or I'm reading it wrong).

My guess would be that he bought one and wanted to get rid of it. The 1000 he claims to have were probably just going to be a quantity buy from gateway. With a nice tidy profit for himself of course. This is a complete guess though. I would suggest that we check gateway to see if they give discounts for quantity buys, and what the prices are. I'm sure no one would like the price until it was in the $200 range, which probably isn't going to happen. I could see spending $400 on one of these, if I knew I could get a hard drive in it like the IO. An already integrated touchscreen would be quite nice.

Howdy all,

I've been "tied up". I sort of pooped out on CF-01 info... only had time to turn it on and play for a bit.

AOL/Gateway web pad on eBay from same guy has a "reserve met" bid of $300. It has been at that for a day now (seems like longer) with the first bid at starting price and only two bids.

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1228864137

If no one else bids on it maybe seller will start to get the message that very few people are willing to pay any more for it. Remember that current winning bidder may have a proxy bid that is higher than $300 so if anyone makes small bids to check out how high his bid goes it will give message to seller that other people are interested. We DON'T want that.

BTW.... the one that was listed earlier and went for $250 "buy it now" price was listed by another seller and was slightly used.

Be well all,

"Ah crapola....sorry for the multiple posts..." (Greenspark)

What everyone needs to do is not buy these for above a certain price, if we all stick together they will realize that we wont pay a large sum of money.

Folks,

Please post to the thread listed two messages up rather than this one, so we have a central point of focus for this. That thread is also where current discussions are ongoing, thanks....
