Hey Ya'll,

Stumbled upon those gateway internet appliances on http://www.tradeout.com/shared/bid/details.jsp?auid=274056 At only $250 a pop, and minimum 10 shipping quantity i say we do this thing, these things kick ass, Peaze ~Frezno~

You have to sign in to see it. Clickable link below.

http://www.tradeout.com/shared/bid/details.jsp?auid=274056

The details: *Asking* price is $250. No reason we can't offer $200 a pop. We may get laughed at, but who knows.

Here's the Gateway page:

http://www.gateway.com/promotion/touchpad/index.shtml

The OS choices: BE, WinCE, mobile Linux. Can a desktop Windows/Linux be put on this thing? I'll look at the other threads, but I'd really like a full OS on it, not a handheld OS.

What was that other guy asking? $350? And this person is asking $250 obo? Heh.

Looks like the Crusoe chip can handle a desktop OS:

http://www.transmeta.com/crusoe/download/pdf/TM3200_ProductBrief_5-20-00.pdf

Still looking for more info. If I can dump a desktop OS on here, I'm in for at least one.

Can we start a list of who wants one at the $250 price point?

Well, it may not be the same person.

I've searched for info on this, fairly sparse amounts of anything real concerning what's inside it.

If anyone can recall the thread where someone posted pics of the internal of this thing (it might have been the audrey I'm thinking of), I would appreciate a link. A group buy could be a great idea, but I'd like to know a little something about the internals before going forward with it.

Well, StarFish. This is a good idea. I think we need just one person to try to work this deal like WordSmith was doing previously. The seller might get ticked if he gets 10 or 15 emails of people wanting to buy them for $100-$200. What do you guys think?

Okay Guys,

FIRST...Put me down for at least one.

I have a used one coming. It should show up any day. It was supposed to have been sent out Monday. This is not from the same guy.

Here's the deal. I will be willing to forward it on, EXPRESS, to someone for investigative purposes to open and, hopefully, take and post pictures of innards and report to group.

My thinking on how to pick best person to do this is to take recommendations or nominations from members. How about ..you can't nominate yourself but can do so for a board member or ask another board member to recommend you.

I want this unit back intact and unhacked. No tinkering or doing any probing or measurments that are risky, please.

Member needs to have immediate available time to open 'er up and get the info to board ASAP.

Whomever is nominated and willing to do this.... please assure me that you are able to fix it if you break something. BTW...since I will be sending it on unopened I will trust that if something is wrong with it when you receive it you can give me details so I can inform the person I purchased it from. I would expects that it would be something that could be fixed.

Email me at epodsgranny@hotmail.com with recommendations and a very brief reason why this nominee(s) is/are best suited for the job. Note to The Real EXPERTS here. You can noninate yourself.

This really sound like a contest huh???? Just thought I could do a little contributing too. I don't have any spare time right now AND I don't consider myself nearly capable to do much other than "follow" the true "hackers" in our fabulous "community".

So as not to clutter the board, please use emails for suggestions and nominations unless you think others would be interested. I want to keep the nominations private so as not to hurt any feelings or open any cans of worms.

It would be great to have a couple or so on list so that there will be a "next" to contact

Granny, if you're just going to be taking pics of the things, I'd suggest finding someone local who's a little technical and can operate a screwdriver. However, someone who can investigate the BIOS would also be useful, so someone who could do that would be a good thing as well. But BIOSes can always be replaced too, so how about popping it open and getting a few pics before sending it off?

I believe a single point of contact is a good idea. WordsmitH, if it's the same guy, you may be the best point, but I'm not volunteering anyone. If there's someone in the Atlanta area, that may be an even better choice.

I'm in for one, can't hurt to offer $200 or less. As far as contacts, I would also suggest Starfish, or r_fl_z as good candidates. I might consider it myself, as I currently have some time available.

Let's see what Granny's system looks like before jumping in with both feet, but need to think about getting discussions going ASAP.

The guy selling them on eBay @ $350 may be buying them from these folks and just taking a $100 markup along the way....

I've been considering it myself as well (sales contact, not technical evaluator). One thing to keep it mind: If we purchase these bulk they may have to be shipped to one address. Which means that person will then have to re-ship to everyone else.

Ed,

You're welcome to give it a shot, I just happen to be between jobs at the moment so thought that I could dedicate some time to the whole process. If this thing can take a HD and standard OS without too much grief, this is a pretty good deal at $250 and even better for less. Need to look at the following logistics:

- Will this do what we want it to do?
- Better idea of actual interest and initial quantity for first buy ASAP
- Negotiate better price (if possible) based on this quantity and potential of more later
- Receive payments from buyers beforehand (PayPal) to minimize outlay by group buyer
- Forward payment to seller and arrange most economical shipment
- If price can't be negotiated down, work towards free shipping of bulk quantity
- Receive bulk quantity and reship to individual buyers
- Possible 2nd/3rd round group buys

All,

Well, I am technical, can do pretty fancy work with a screwdriver, very capable of investigating the bios, etc... I'm in the process of moving my office/workshop (ongoing...it seems to never end), in the middle of doing work on two demanding corporate accounts right now, Spring has arrived in FULL and my mini-ranch is way too demanding (imagine not being able to find your smallest dog [70lbs] in the near butt high grass), all my scanners are unhooked-up, gave both my "serious" cameras away, I'm a'feared my cheap digital camera won't cut the bill for doing serious closeup pics, AND I was hoping that "the person" who does the investigating for us would be capable of doing some probing, tracing, or measuring values on board if needed. I don't have proper equiptment for that even if I had the time.

I thought it expedite the whole process to just EXPRESS it on to someone capable, willing, and who has the TIME right now.

Be well all,

From my orginal post want to make something clear. Please do any probing, measuring, etc., as desired...just don't want initial investigation to be done recklessly...how about "reasonably safe" probing. Also, everyone wants immediate bios info, hard drive potential, and PICTURES.

Ed, would you mind if I used your above quote in my signature; attributed to you, of course. I just love it and it sure does fit my posting pattern.

I'm willing to stick my neck out as the front man for this deal, but someone else will be much more qualified to crack Granny's unit open (in a nice way of course) to see what makes it tick. BadFlash, Turbo3, r_fl_z, etcetera, please volunteer your services as best you can and let's see if this is worthwhile ASAP. If no one has any objections, I'd be happy to initiate email contact with the seller tomorrow and see if: 1) There is an interest in discounting a group buy of 30+ units, 2) Any further info they may have (or I can glean regarding their possession of these units), and 3) If this is the same guy hustling these on eBay.

As far as my menial qualifications:
- Currently between jobs, with time to spare
- Electronics process engineer, so I do know my way around a circuit board and hardware
- Negotiating skills (though usually with multi-mil$$ capital purchases)
- Handled initial group buy of 2nd USB port kits here on the board
- Current PayPal account to handle incoming purchase requests
- 20 positive feedback notes from my small career on eBay (mikemcm1956)

Let me know what y'all think, otherwise I'll get in line with whoever wants to set it up....

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I guess I'll drive this thing. After thought, I agree that I'll wait until somebody sees what this is capable of before initiating discussions with the seller. If he has 1000 pieces, they're not going to disappear overnight. I'll await further technical info from our capable colleagues before proceeding. Has anyone committed to handle Granny's unit?

Dingle,

Y'all,

We're getting close to 30 units now, which I think could give us a fair shake at negotiating a price break. However, I'm not moving forward with seller contact until someone gets a look inside one to see if it's a viable platform to hack. Let's continue to get 'preliminary interest' orders posted here as a central point for counting. Please don't anyone jump the gun and try to contact this seller, unless you just want to get crossed signals sent and muck things up.

GeekGranny,

Did your system show up today? I'm still trying to help you court someone a little more technical (possibly BadFlash, pleasepleaseplease?) to give it a lookie-see for our purposes.

Jamesd1343,

I guess you've probably already looked up the specs to answer your previous questions regarding processor, etcetera. As it stands, it looks to only run Linux/BE/WinCe, not full WinXX. That's why we need to get a feel for what can be done to the platform to 'pump it up' with HD & OS. As far as the networking, the seller says it comes with the HPNA and modem, with the option of 'build to order Ethernet'. Don't know if that can be configured pre-order or is an aftermarket option.

Wordsmith,

Patience, grasshopper, all will become evident soon. Thanks man, it was your original heads-up on the eBay units that got this going. Hopefully we can all make it happen together (big mushy electronic group hug)!

Stay tuned....

smigs,

I hate to play 'what if?' games with sellers, unless we're really ready to deal. Having dealt with large $$ capital purchase negotiations over the years and playing one vendor against the other, you need to be ready to buy now when one meets your terms. Otherwise you've just wasted your time and theirs for no good reason, and probably pissed them off in the process. I may want to deal with this company for something else somewhere down the road, and my reputation as a buyer is important to me. With a minimum purchase quantity of 10 pieces, most folks here need to band together to get one at all. We're looking for a $200 price point or lower, but most of us would probably still come to the table for $250 and free shipping. You're not going to find anything out there with this speed and capability at this price, especially if it's "upgradeable, hehehe". Hell, if we can't negotiate a better deal and no one else gets on board at a $250 price, I'll max out the MasterCard and resell 'em myself. Patience please, they're not going anywhere yet....

Also is the belief that Win 98/2K/ME won't run based on limitations of the BIOS/Crusoe or just what's already been reported elsewhere?

Within it, it states:

When used in conjunction with Transmeta’s x86 Code Morphing software, the Crusoe Processor provides x86-compatible software execution without requiring code recompilation. Systems based on this solution are capable of executing all standard x86-compatible operating systems and applications, including Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Linux.

Nobody stated 98/W2k/ME wouldn't run, just that they're not listed in the available OSes for the device so we don't know if they'd work. But, since the board has an IDE header on it and that familiar BIOS chip setup, I'd say this is looking better. Now we need someone to rip into it technically.

I'd trade TWO webplayers for ONE touchpad if anyone is in the market for those.
This is NOT a FS offer. If I don't get touchpads, I'm holding on to the webplayers.

This is looking better and better very quickly. BadFlash has graciously volunteered his services to have a look at this thing and possibly see what the BIOS looks like inside. We still haven't heard if GeekGranny has received her unit yet that she volunteered for testing, I've emailed her off-line and hope she is still following the thread. If anyone else has a unit they could get to BadFlash ASAP, let us know. But based on the data and mobo pictures from the thread that Scan32 started, it really looks like the iO's big brother. I will send a preliminary email to the seller requesting info on an initial buy of 30-50 units and see what his pain threshold is to move some of these fairly quickly. Wish me luck, this is where it starts to get interesting....

B'Dog

P.S. - I don't know if we should keep Scan32's thread going on the technical aspects, or roll any further tech info into this thread. I'm worried that another thread may make it difficult to keep a single point of continuity for all aspects of this project. It's up to y'all.

Granny,

Deal direct with BadFlash as far as sending him the unit, just let us know when you get it and when it goes out. BadFlash can then keep us updated here as to his progress. As it stands at this moment, we appear to have 28 units comitted to by the folks on this thread, even at $250. Plus an additional 14+ if the price point can be sweetened down to around $200. We're on our way to 50, this will hopefully give us some additional leverage with the seller. I sent an email their way this morning, but haven't heard back yet.

"I am potentially interested in a purchase of between 30-50 of these units, and am looking for your best pricing at these quantities. This would be an initial purchase, with possible additional quantity purchases to follow within a few weeks. Thanks for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you."

Sincerely,
etc, etc.

I'll keep y'all updated as anything develops....

Hi all... following this for a while.

Count me in for one @$250.

Interesting note:

The tradeout site lists the item with shipping terms as "CFR"

***
Cost and Freight (CFR) - The Seller owns the goods until they are
loaded on the truck (or other vessel). The selling price includes the cost
of the goods and freight charges
. The Buyer arranges and pays for
insurance.
***

They weigh about 2lb a piece... can't be more than $5 or so for insurance.

So... the only extra costs (assuming the $250 price stays) is insurance (to the (bulk) buyer) and then re-shipping/insurance costs on from (bulk) buyer to end user. I'd assume $10 for UPS ground should cover it

It should be possble to do $265 all in?

Another point... HPNA (home networking) is built in. This is really just a glorified Ethernet card with some fancy line balancing electronics on the back end to attach to a phone line. It should be possible to modify - dare I say hack? - the HPNA card to run standard Ethernet. I'd suspect the card has all the components locations available and just needs the right bits added... [can anyone say WebSurfer Ethernet ???]

Anyway... count me in for 1

Cheers,

The home pna cards I have, Linksys but not sure at the moment, can be used as either phone line connected or ethernet connected with a regular 45 plug. Windozs detects either depending on which kind of line is connected. BTW There are two ports on the card; an 11 for phone and a 45 for ethernet. I'm using them with wired network and have had no problems with them in Win98 and 2000.

Haven't heard from "seller" yet on the shipment question.

Chiron,

If the price before shipping is less than $200, then I'm back to my fallback of buying them all myself and 'remarketing' them to the eBay crowd! Let's get serious, you couldn't touch a system like this anywhere near a $250 price point! Old iOs fresh in the box are going for close to $200, the processor speed and touchscreen capability bump this up into the "$250 is a fair price" range. I'll do the best I can to work this down, if I fail and someone thinks they can do better they're welcome to it. Of course after I can at least get a 10 piece order at $250 before you p*ss him off or clue him in that we might like these things....

You have to figure they're trolling the board, let's try to stick together on this. Safety and power in numbers, ya know?

B'Dog

Seriously, still no response from the 'seller'. They may or may not have actual possession of these things, might have just have approached Gateway as a potential liquidator and worked their own deal based on a final quantity sold over a certain period of time

My seller finally emailed me back. Here is the reply: (all of his reply)

<<<<<Its on the way, check ******* for shipping info. It was sent out this week
via usps. Patience =*)>>>>>

Granny adds: It was picked up 18th and processed on the 19th. No information on what form of shipping but I assume that it would have to be priority to get a USPS tracking number. It is coming from New Jersey to Dallas area.

Just got off the phone doing ePods tech support for very impatient and snappy Hubby trying to connect to his computer here (PC Anywhere and to local (Chicago Earthlink/Mindspring). Finally got the modem strings straightened out but he keeps getting busy indication. (Even though the room has two analog lines and a fax machine and he's using his cell phone for talking to me.) I had it all set up here and working great so I assume it is the hotel phone system. After five or six calls in 24 hrs. I firmly told him that the Fairmont Hotel SHOULD have some person who can help him, especially at the prices he is paying for everything. He's the kind of caller I used to hate when I was doing phone tech support BUT he "pays" me well!!!!!!!

I'll keep you's informed and will get in touch with BadFlash about sending "unit" on to him.

r_fl_z,

I just dropped you a line with some details, we can better chat off-board.

Everybody else,

By current tally, we're at 41 units at the listed price of $250 with another 20 if we can get down to around $200. I'm still awaiting a reply from the seller, and will send him another email tomorrow to further express the sincerity and quantity of the interest and try to get this thing rockin' and rollin'. Anyone else that is interested in units, post ASAP so we can get a good tally for possible negotiating. Anyone that has already posted, be prepared to put your money up for what you asked for when this goes down.

My current plan is to take payments via my PayPal account over a 2-3 day period once we strike a deal, transfer to my primary bank account and then pay the seller via a cashier's check or wire transfer. The downside is I'll have to add about $6 to the transaction for the PayPal fees, which shouldn't crimp anybody too bad. I also planned on coming up with a flat rate for shipping to buyers to avoid having all kinds of calculations and transactions to worry about for each buyer. Shipping would probably be via UPS Ground for the lowest rate, and should include insurance. I want to make this viable for everybody and as smooth and painless as possible to get the units and get them out to y'all. I'm getting itchy just thinking about this system.

I am always open to suggestions and comments, either on-board or off at BubbaDog56@ev1.net

Folks,

I am going to post a formal bid for 65 units at $200 each on TradeOut and see what kind of response I get. His asking price of $250 is not flagged as 'Firm', so let's give it a shot. He hasn't answered my email from last Thursday, and may not be willing to put a best price up for fear of others finding out. Using the 'Bid' function on TradeOut should get his attention and a response. It appears that he has moved 100 units of the 1000, a balance of 900 now shows on the page.

I'm also going to contact Gateway and try to find out how someone came about 1000 of these, and if they might work a deal for our quantity....

Swanky,

My personal opinion is that this should be hackable based on the looks of the mobo, just a matter of busting the BIOS to hookup a HD. If anyone thinks they want to hold back their committment to buy, let me know. The seller is showing 2 days left on his posting, I don't want to miss the boat. Though if he still has 900, he'll probably relist 'em....

will & mooner,

I'll put you on the list, nothing has been firmed up yet.

Steve,

I also got your off-board email regarding this. I do feel that even at $250 this is a good deal, this group buy is to get us in the door with a quantity that may deserve lower pricing consideration. Even if not, it gets us past the minimum 10 piece requirement to get any at all. I'm not going to go to the seller with a price guaranteed to insult his business sense and screw the whole deal. I think he's already priced these to move at $250, Gateway has listed them at the 'new low' price of $499. Let's wait for a reply and see where we stand. I'm still in at $250, as are 40 other folks....

All,

Update on Test Unit.

Unit didn't arrive today. Tomorrow (Tuesday) it will have been officially in US Postal system for 6 days. It appears seller shipped it ground. Things usually never take any loger than that. So if it arrives tommorrow (Tuesday) I'm going to forward it on overnight, if not above a limit (sort-of, kind-of, perhaps, maybe) I have set...oh, what the hell... I'll probably pay whatever overnight fee it cost. ....It will be sent on to Jack at BadFlash. He is expecting it.

I know. It is going to be very difficult not taking a peak at it but I am going to contain myself. I'm taking labels and clear tape to post office so I can just send 'er on, right there on the spot, immediatly, lessening the temptation.

donerb & clwade,

I've added you to the list, we'll see if we can negotiate the final quantity after (hopeful) acceptance of our bid.

Update to all,

Still no feedback on our bid yet as far as acceptance or denial. I have sent the seller another email via TradeOut's blind email system, requesting current status of our bid and remaining units. I also expressed possible interest at $250, but at a lower quantity. The listing for these is set to expire in about 45 minutes, the seller may be required to keep quiet until the close of the listing and bids. I hope we haven't lost these, a $250 bid probably would have guaranteed our buy but we'll just wait and see.

I received some interesting emails off-board last night from someone who says they have already hacked their unit with a HD & WinCE OS. They also provided some additional details, but wish to remain anonymous at this point. I've asked for permission to post the technical aspects of their work, and will do so as soon as they reply.

Cross your fingers, watching and waiting....

TradeOut Update:

The sale closed with only one bidder out of five securing units. They purchased 100 at the asking price of $250. The other bidders were $190/20, $175/20, $200/10 and our bid of $200/75.

The seller still has 900 units, and has immediately reposted them with an asking price of $225 and a sale closing date of 5/24. I have already reposted our bid for 75 @ $200. If we're really anxious, we can up our bid to $225 at any time and secure our order.

Let's see what else we can find out about the 'upgrade' potential from BadFlash and my off-board contact, and then decide as a group where we go from here. Stay tuned, it appears they're not going anywhere in a hurry based on the bids received in the previous listing....

I know indeed that some of the GW touchpad systems can be hacked. The one pictured in a previous post has the IDE header intacted. As we all know I-opener did also utill it got hacked. I am currently typing this on a hacked unit running Win ME. The hard drive cable is the same as the I-opener, just twist every other wire. I have a 10/100 box on my network. I have full access to all apps thru networked drives. I run Win amp for MP3. The CPU runs like a 400 Celeron. No notiable heat issues. Using the system is like using a $700 portable a little slow and the graphics are not gameing quality. I have no problem surfing the net or typeing a letter. Great for playing Mp3 in the kithen or on the coffee table. I has allowed me to bring the net into my kithen without taking up the counter.

Test unit did not arrive today. Surely tomorrow!!! Tomorrow will be 7 days that it is in the US Postal System. Rarely has any ground parcel taken that long to get here. Maybe it's the NJ end...damn yankees, just kidding.

Above posts look very encouraging!!! I'm getting WinXP tomorrow. Really glad I don't have the time to play with either. Yeh, right.

Cheers

BTW.... as stated by BubbaDog56 I'm really anxious for Badflash to "crack Granny's unit open."

This gives a giggle, still.... You guys must know that this is one of the most civil, well behaved, groups of comp geeks(and/or)hackers anywhere. The flaming even keeps pretty cool most of the time. It is good.

Starfish & others,

Bigdork1 appears to be the individual who has emailed me off-board regarding the hackability of the Gateway unit. His original post to me said he was running WinCE, not ME, but could just be a slip of the ol' keystroke eh? His info is greatly appreciated by all concerned, but I will feel much better when BadFlash can validate the capabilities independently.

General Update For All:

I have posted another blind email to the TradeOut seller outlining our position and current interest. In addition, I've requested further info on the Ethernet option, availability and pricing.

I've also received a response to my email to Gateway Direct expressing interest in if we have a business or institution affiliation for discount purposes. My response and the original Gateway email are below:

(Dear Gateway Rep),
Thanks for the prompt reply, I look forward to working with you on this.
I am the representative for a group of individuals interesting in purchasing
these for their personal use. It was felt that by pooling our resources for
a quantity purchase, and providing a single point of contact for the
purchasing cooperative, that we stand the best chance for success.

As mentioned in my initial message, there is an individual with a
quantity of 1000 pieces of these currently liquidating them via a
Business-to-Business website. Their original asking price of $250 per unit
brought them a single buyer for only 100 units. They have now relisted the
remaining 900 units at an asking price of $225 per unit. These prices
require a minimum 10 unit buy, which we easily exceed.

Without making too many assumptions, it appears possible that the seller
may be a broker representing Gateway in liquidating the majority of their
current inventory of these units. I can see no other way that they can
secure such a quantity and offer them at their asking price, unless they
have secured them directly from your manufacturer. Perhaps Gateway has
encountered the same sales and marketing problems faced by other internet
appliance manufacturers such as Netpliance (iOpener) and 3Com (Audrey) in
offering a system of little perceived functionality at a price equal to or
exceeding a complete PC.

Regardless, what I am hoping to achieve is an initial buy of 75 units at
$200. Based on the success of this transaction, I feel strongly that there
will be a second group buy within another few weeks for an additional 75-100
units as word spreads within our group regarding the initial purchase.

I want to assure you of the sincerity of this offer, and the committment
to follow through if an agreement can be reached. If not, we will continue
to pursue our quantity purchases through the seller at the B-to-B website.
Thanks for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

xxxxxxx

Should we start thinking about what to do if/when an offer is accepted? What if he says "Ok, deal. Wire me $15,000 by noon tomorrow"?
Also, it's going to take quite a bit of work to organize the payments from people and ship out 75 units. It would be nice if whoever's going to do all those shipments had some help. So maybe others who live in that persons area could help.

The Gateway Connected Touch Pad is based om a Transmeta reference design for Web Slates and uses their
Crusoe TM3200 400MHz processor. Transmeta has developed its own OS for these designs, called Midori Linux.
This Mobile Linux OS has support for touchscreens, power management, USB, Ethernet, etc. The source code and packages (incl. MP3 app.) can be downloaded from their website.
All we need is just a "kind fella" to build the system (OS) small enough to fit on the 32MB CompactFlash card, that already carries the OS in the Gateway Touch Pad and post an image, with instructions on this BBS. I am pretty sure the Midori OS will allow use of the 44pin IDE port, that is on the board
If we can get into the Bios and get the Gateway Touch Pad to boot from the IDE, than we can start playing with Windows, BeOS, etc.

Here are some links:

ON ITS WAY TO BADFLASH!!!!!!

Test unit arrived today, although USPS tracking service does not show that it has arrived. It is on its way to Jack at BadFlash, Express. The boxed weight, including keyboard, power, and packing is 18lbs 3oz. Didn't measure box but it is approximately 20" sq by 8-10' deep, in case anyone wants to figure the cost of mass shipping out to people when our "deal" goes through.

Granny,

Was that weight based on the original Gateway packaging? The seller has these listed as approx. 2lbs each? Glad it's finally en route to the laboratory, hehehe....

tcbordp,

Added you to the list, hopefully we can get whatever quantity when we strike a deal with someone....

SuperRob,

I don't know what issues you have with PayPal TOS, email me at BubbaDog56@ev1.net and let me know. PayPal seemed to be the easiest way to get everyone's funds together quickly when this finally goes down, we can't be sitting around waiting for the proverbial 'check's in the mail' to arrive. As it is, clearing funds in and out of PayPal will add about 7 days to the overall transaction time. If we end up doing this, I need to give PayPal a heads up as to why a large number of transactions for a substantial total amount will be moving through my account rapidly. I had received an email off-board from a participant in the WebPlayer co-op that said that PayPal had tied up their funds until they were certain that they weren't laundering money. I believe that Uncle Sam requires any transactions over $10,000 be reported, so they're probably just exercising due diligence on their part....

smigs and all,

Still no reply from the seller regarding the latest bid or my questions regarding the Ethernet option. We are the only bidder at this point, but he may stay mum and sit tight since he's got 28 days left on this current offering. Also, no word back yet from the Gateway Direct sales rep, he's probably passed this upstairs for review by higher mucky-mucks. I'll be tickling them both again in the morning....

BubbaDog56,

The wt. is based on weighing it at PO counter to ship to BadFlash. I'm not sure if it was original packing or shipping box or what kind of packing on inside. Could even have double boxing. I didn't open it. Clerk brought it from back, set it on scale, we applied my label, and off it went.

2lbs. is pretty unrealistic. The epods weighs more than 2lbs. This is larger, has a (probably) weighted stand attached, keyboard, and not sure about power supply and cords. There couuld, also be printed materials enclosed.

BadFlash can fill us in on packing materials and contents.

I have an unopened IO. Touchpad should weigh in at or above that. I will weigh it tomorrow (Thursday)

Regarding hackability - Granny sent one off to Flash and hopefully we'll get some info once he gets to picking this thing apart.

Regarding Paypal - Paypal is like an MS OS. If everything goes fine, you have no idea you're dealing with junk. When one little thing goes wrong, you realize what a pain in the ass in can be to get things fixed. If another option is available and it's not too much of a pain in the ass, I'd probably use it. I may risk PP again if need be.

Update to all:

Still no response from the seller on TradeOut regarding our bid or ethernet option availability. I'm not feeling comfy about this, and have sent an email to TradeOut Customer Service asking for further info on the seller. Also requested info as to whether or not the previous buyer of 100 units has successfully closed their transaction.

Got a response back from Gateway Direct to my morning missive, along with my response below:

====================================================
Art,
Thanks for your quick response. But I've got to tell you, $285 a unit as compared to $225 (or less) from our online source is a pretty big bridge to cross. We would prefer to deal with Gateway Direct on this if possible, so let's see if we can find some common ground.

Most of our co-op members are interested in the Ethernet option, perhaps that could be bundled in the $285 price. If Gateway is getting out of this market (are they?), this would be just another write-down against the loss. If we could add drop shipping to the individuals involved in the co-op we might be able to strike a deal. Check with the 'powers that be' and get back to me.

On a side note, how have 1000 of these showed up on a B-to-B website? Enquiring minds want to know if it's Gateway moving them, or perhaps Quanta, the company who manufactured them for Gateway? Let's move this up the food chain at Gateway and see if we can help you sell some of these. TIA again for your assistance.

Sincerely,
xxxxxx

=========================================================

So as y'all can see, we're not much closer than we started. I received an email off-board last night from a member that may be expressing what others may be thinking, so I'm going to copy it here with my response. Once again, I'm just trying to make this happen for all of us, I have no interest in being a big-shot in this deal. If anyone else wants to strike out on their own, go for it. Off-board message and my reply below:

=======================================================
Hey Bdog,
What's up, this is XXXXX from linux-hacker.net board. I was thinking that we ought to see if we can get at least 10 people and do a "small scale" buy for $225 each. I mean $25 probably will not be a big deal for most and plus it will give us a few more units to play with and see what we can do with it. I mean this is just my opinion and I am sure that the buyer is keeping mum until closer to the end. I am also worried that something person or company is going to come and buy the 900 for $225. I mean these could sell for 300 on Ebay, at least I think. Maybe I am just anxious, but let me know what you think!

XXXXX,
I've been thinking something similar, but have held back because:

- I still don't have a 'warm & fuzzy' about the seller, based on the lack of
response to emails so far. Even if they want to blow off our bid, they could
at least send a simple 'Thanks for your interest, but....". They've still
supposedly got 900 units, you'd think they'd be interested in talking to
potential buyers. It's possible that they are a broker for Gateway, or
Quanta (the manufacturer) and can't answer questions. It's also possible
that they're offering these without actually having them yet, like Earth
Computers and the "$99/$125 iOpeners" thread that turned out to be a bust. I
don't want to stick my weenie out and get it whacked along with some people
who had confidence in me.

- We may have a possibility of dealing direct with Gateway, which would be
preferred if the price is competitive. A company that big 'probably' won't
whack your weenie once they commit to something like this.

- We still don't have confirmation from a trusted source as to the
hackability of this thing, just a newbie who says they have a beta unit that
they hacked. Nothing personal Bigdork1, just call me an optimistic pessimist.
I'm a lot more comfortable with the 'BadFlash Seal of Approval', as I'm sure
most others are. It's easy to get caught up in the frenzy and posts, but I
don't need a $225 hi-tech doorstop.

- I don't think anyone's going to swoop in and grab all 900 at $225. The
surplus buyer's market is down and dirty, if they were $125 someone might
make a power play and try to resell them as a 900 unit lot for a small
markup and quick profit. Selling these puppies on eBay would take you a
loooong time.

So that's where I'm at right now, hopefully the next day or two will
enlighten us. Trust me, I'm itching for one bad myself....

I usualy use a White Windows IR keyboard that looks the same that I got with another system. It has the added Play and soft volume keys. Keep trying to hit the Read key at boot. Mine doesn't always work. It takes two or three tries sometimes. If you are trying to boot to a HDD remove the Sandisk. It will then go to the HDD as second in boot order. Hi,
I'm starting to wonder about this... did anyone get feedback from the purchaser of the 100 units?

I'd pay a premium to buy from Gateway, if it's really $285 from Gateway vs $225 from a party who doesn't respond, I'd suggest having Gateway handle the orders on a special code basis, like give an 800 number and a code to buy in directly from Gateway let them handle shipping and charging. If they want a guarantee, at this point it looks like at least 100 units will be sold, but my guess is it'd be easier for everyone if Gateway itself handled credit card charges and shipping hassles, that's got to be worth $50 at this point.

My 2 cents... sign me Justme concerned about both the length of this thread and the unresponse from the seller If we hang together and Gateway handles any of the headaches for us, we'd have a much better deal I think, with a likely larger total supply being shipped (making for a larger and stronger group eventually). A $285 product from gateway with a code number will likely sell 1,000 units within 30 minutes of appearing on slash dot, it'd certainly make our group much stronger as a derrivitive of the initial I-Opener group

I'll also go $285 if we can get them directly from Gateway, AND if they will include Ethernet.

Well if we care looking at $285 from Gateway then it will be about $300 with shipping. Also, are they going to get us that price because we have about 90 possible sales. Would they also be $285 with a smaller amount? Because I am sure that we are not get 90 sales at $285. Just me 2 cents!

Hold on a minute, are you guys saying that the touchscreen will NOT work if we load another OS such as 98 or ME? That's the main attraction to this unit and if there aren't drivers to make this work for a windows OS then I don't think I'd be interested any longer.

Well for now, there's no way to get into the BIOS on a retail unit.
I tried about 10 times this morning, hitting the READ key. NO GO !
So there's little sense in worrying about putting another OS on there !

Man this is a long thread, any way to show the newest posts first?

I *might* be able to convince my wife that we, er, I need one. Although she still does not beleive that I needed a webplayer.

Someone, please email me a copy of this "protected" BIOS that won't let you set things up. If it's anything like the V5 BIOS, I'll probably be able to figure out how to crack it.

geekgranny's unit arrived at my shop today. Looks like another IOPENER to me. Once I get into it I'll start a new thread.

What format do you want the BIOS in ?
I might be able to get a ROM dump on Monday if it fits the EEPROM burner we have at the office.

I would Guess, .BIN ???
I think 5 could fit on a Floppy ??? @ least 2 ?
What formats do WE have to choose from ?
BadFlash doesn't think He is having a problem with the Stock BIOS, so maybe We don't need this ?
But I can't see it hurting to have 2 Copies to Compare.
Any Differents could Help Solve any Issues that might arise.

Thanks, for asking. * StarFish *

ok I'll see if I can take the BIOS out of its socket or maybe put dos on a CF since you mention this proggie that enables copies, Flash821, got a link.
I don't think Badflash's been able to get into the BIOS, at least that's not what I understand from his post on the other thread.

well it does to the extent that if I want to access DOS, I need to try to boot off the CF no ? unless I can use a standard 44 to 44 IDE cable, but I understand that I might need a special iOpener IDE cable.
