Fujitsu Stylistic 1200 pentium class pen tablet
Anyone have any experience with these

Hi there group, I haven't posted in forever but it is good to see that things are still being hacked away.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has expereince with the Fujitsu Stylistic 1200's.

It has a pentium 120mhz, 2.1gb hard drive but it uses a active stylus instead of a passive stylus. It also has 2 PCMCIA slots.

The link to the fujitsu website on it is:
http://www.fujitsupc.com/www/support.shtml?support/techspecs/pentabs/Stylistic1200

I am just wondering if people ahd used these for anything really cool. I just want to use it with a wireless card to surf the net around the house and maybe make a color GPS head in my car.

Any other ideas?

Actually, my wife and I just had a visit from the life-insurance saleperson and I noticed he was using a Fujitsu-something (I can't remember for sure)--but I think it may have been a Stylistic (it did have a little Intel Pentium Inside sticker).

The unit seemed to be OK. about 1.5" inches thick and very scquare. It wasn't too zippy, but it got the task done of preparing out life insurance quote.

I couldn't tell for sure what CPU or how big the HD was because of the log-in credentials.

However, it had quite a few ports: combo PS/2 (keyboard+mouse--I think), Parallel, 2 PCMCIA slots, 9 pin serial, but I noticed it had *no* USB connector.

The screen seemed to just be a DSTN (like the IOpener), and was smaller, but not by much.

The stylus was indeed active. The unit I used also had some handwriting recognition program, but again, I don't know exactly what.

The insurance guy said it cost his company something like $5,700 (yep, that's right)!!! I told him what a rip-off, and showed him my IOpener and ePod. He just about crapped his pants when I told him the price I payed

Aynway. Would *I* get one? Maybe, but then again, I'm a cheap b-a-s-t-a-r-d and wouldn't pay more than $150 US for it.

But that's just my opinion.

I work as a heavy aircraft repair tech for a large company and I've seen our avionics techs in a different department use similar fujitsu's for "Black box" diagnostics, etc.
The ones I played with had a p-166/200 and Win98. I thought these were kinda cool and hoped they would "surplus" a few but no luck so far.
The i-Opener is a bit zippier and more my price range too!

I have been able to get one to play around with for $170.00 but the guy I bought it from indicated he would drop the price some if I wanted to get more, like 10 or so. Probably could get him down to $150. It seems that he bought a large amount of these 1200's off lease or something.

Here is the list of stuff that is included with what I bought.

Stylistic 1200, P120 mhz, 32megs of ram, 2.1 gig HD, 8in Color LCD Screen (I figure it is the DSTN not the TFT one I will let you know when I get mine), AC Adapter, and stylus. It also has a bunch of ports (look at the list above) but there is no USB port.

The hard drive has been wiped clean which is not so great since there is not a floppy or CD-Rom, I am going to go the I-Opener install route of just loading the OS on the Disk from my desktop machine and then doing the setup on the Tablet.

The guy said he cannot guarantee the battery or the stylus but he will give a 14-day guarantee on the rest of it, meaning harddrive and what not.

If we find enough people I will talk with him some more and try to get the units for less than $150.

My unit should be here tomorrow for me to start playing around with.

Looks like a sweet deal and the possibility of another group buy. Let us know how it turns out. What OS are you planning on putting on it? Also, let us know how long the battery lasts, color res., etc.

If these things turn out to be half decent, please put me next in line for one around the $150 range :}

Thanks, reldridg :)

Here is an interesting link which compares several handhelds including the Stylistic and the Panasonic CF-01:

http://208.201.97.5/pubs/gbb/1998/0202/gbb-coverstory-2-2-1998.html

I had a chance to use the stylistic about three years ago. We were evaluating it as a field unit for environmental field work. It really wasn't rugged enough for our purposes. My most vivid recollection was that the kids thought it was the coolest thing, but I found the handwriting recognition awkward at best. It just wasn't practical.

But at $150 it beats the hell out of a Palm Pilot, except for the part about stuffing it in your shirt pocket. That might get a few looks, and would definitely give away your geekiness.

Does anyone have a link for a picture of the beast ?
Also, what's the battery life ? Hope it's better than the CF-01's 2 hours...

Never mind, just found this: http://www.mobilityconcepts.com/st1200i.htm#BATTERY

They say battery life is UP to 5 hours, which probably means 3 hours at best...

My other concern is the HD being wiped clean...Wonder if all drivers and especially the acclaimed hand-written application are available anywhere.

I have called into fujitsu a couple of times to get them to send me out the driver but they just have the answering machine and say they will call back. Maybe if a bunch of us send emails and call in about the drivers they will put them back on the website.
Also if you go to http://www.linuxslate.org they describe how to get the 1200 working with linux and that site has the linux drivers for the digitizer screen.

I have been able to get the MSWINDOWS drivers for the Stylistic 500 and 1000 but I have heard that those drivers work and also they do not work so I will not know till my unit gets here.

Anyhow I will keep plugging away.

Nah it wasn't from this auction. I am not sure if he has had an auction yet on these items. He just emails me everyonce in awhile when has some different stuff come in. I think they are just saying the battery is warranted incase someone didn't treat them right and they do not carry a full charge.

You can however still get car adapters for these if you want to use them in the car so battery life to me doesn't seem too important but some would be nice.

huh ! what's the deal about no floppy or docking station that "are needed to install software"...
Since they' don't come with software, it's gonna be hard to get these things up and running !
Only solution I see is getting the hard drive out and hooking it up to a desktop via an adapter provided it's a standard 44pin.

Look up in the earlier post for an easy way to install software, Kind of how it was done with the I-opener's. Use a 2.5" to a 3.5" hard disk adapter on your desktop computer and load the setup up software on the drive and then put it back into the tablet.

Then start up the tablet and go through the set up. That seems the easiest way unless you do have a floppy.

I should be receiving mine today or tomorrow so once I do I will let evryone know.

Well here it is to get the best deal Brain (the guy with the stylistics) does not want to do drop shipping.

He is saying if we order 20 he will charge us $135 each plus shipping, he can get 5 in a box and each box is about $40 to ship. So that would make a total of $142.00 to get it to someones place. Then probably another $8 to ship out the individual units making it a total of $150.00 per unit. or something close.

I didn;t receive mine today so I do not have any pictures of it, Brian indicated that we do not need to hurry to get these so if we have to wait till next week to order he will still have them.

If I can get a gurantee from everyone who wants one that they will pay I can probably do the ordering and reship them. I just do not want to be stuck with 20 Fujitsu's.

So what does everyone think who wants one?

Here is what I think about payment. Rather then fuss with PayPal. Why not have the people send Money orders (MO) to a central person. Those MO's are addressed to the seller (In this case Brian). Then when we get all of the MO we can send them to Brian. Then we can get the shipment sent out to the people. Opinions?

The idea of Money Orders made out to the seller sounds like a pretty good idea. In the gateway order that is being talked about there have been some good points about one person receiving a large sum of money via paypal or other source. It can cause all sorts of problems come tax time if you can't prove where the money went. By receiving MO's they can be held and sent in a group to the seller then the only money that would have to be collected individually is for the last stage shipping. So collect a money order for the $142 made out to the seller and paypal or another money order for $8 for shipping.

PeteB

PS. I am still in for $150 or less (Peter Borders above)

Can someone explain "active stylus"? Does this mean that it is not true touch screen, that you have to use the stylus and cannot use your finger?

Since the stylus needs batteries, that seems to be the case. Just want to make certain I'm getting that right. Reldridg, are you going to evaluate the unit you get before placing the order?

Greenspark you are correct about the active stylus. The stylus and screen are the same as a digitizer you would use in CAD or other drawing applications.

I plan on evaluating the unit and providing pictures to the group in the next couple of days.

Reldridg, Thanks. Thought you might get more takers if you put up pics, if you want to keep the "co-op" open for a few more days.

I'd be curious if the "system replicator" addition is available, which has USB ports in it among other things.

Thanks for all the information and all the effort.

Pictures are posted on the website at:

http://reldridg.tripod.com/stylistic1200/id5.html

I just received tickets to a playoff hockey game and am going there in just a minute. I will post all info about ordering and payment probably first thing in the morning.

Plus I want to take the thing apart and get it operational so everyone can see some more pictures.

If you have any questions please email me.

Reldridg, one thing I'm curious about is the battery. Will the battery for the 1000 work in the 1200?

Hey there all,

I am going to have more pictures later today up on the site. It was rather easy to get Windows98 onto the Harddrive on the unit. Now I am needing to get the pen drivers installed which is bugging me a little but I should be able to get it done here fairly soon.

I definetly like it. It is not the fastest thing in the world but perfect for what I want it for, a little tablet to surf the web from the couch and maybe an MP3 Player or GPS head for the car.

I think it is definetly a go on the buy of it. So if we want to get ready to order I am ready.

I was talking with the seller yesterday and he just wants to receive payment from 1 person so I can handle that if everyone is comfortable with that.

It is going to be $150 a unit that should cover all shipping charges to get it to you.

Some people have indicated that they want to send payment to me via pay-pal and also money order. I think either way is fine.

Smigs has offered to help with the repackaging and shipping for the people on the East coast and I can handle the people on the west coast.

My home address is
Ryan Eldridge
1028 Lipan Street
Denver, Colorado 80204
Phone: 303-623-1414
Mobile: 303-669-7904

My paypal address is reldridg@4dv.net, I do not mind if you want to call to make sure there is someone actually here.

Lets try to have the payments in by the end of this week so we can get the units quickly. Make sure to email when you send payment so I can be looking for it in the mail or on pay-pal. I will email you once the payment is here so you know I have it.

If I have left anything out please tell me so I can address it.

I am having a pain in the but time getting it to run with windows 98.
I was just going to give the windows 95 a try and see how it runs with it. The pen services are designed for windows 95.

There is supposed to be a driver for the pen in windows 98 without pen services but I have not found it yet.

At this link: /http://www.ftas.com/hhsolution.htm

There is a blurb that says that there are:

-Windows DLL for setting BIOS options (including power management), which allows custom applications to directly change the system configuration
-Windows DLL for the programmable hot pad
-C Libraries for setting BIOS options and for the programmable hot pad

Has anybody seen where these are?

thanks

Doesn't this have PCMCIA slots on the unit itself? Can you give a rundown of the ports on it on your site? Thanks.

The same pen drivers, pen 2.0, will work in win95 and above, at least as far as win98se I haven't tried winme. Install windows 98(se) like normal with a keyboard and mouse installed. After it is up a running go to add/remove programs and click on the windows setup tab. Then click Have Disk and browse to the location that you have extracted the pen2.0 files to and it will install it just fine. Then you can use the control panel pen applet to set preferences and align the pen if needed. I just did this on my CF-01 and it works just fine.

I will work on that tomorrow Pete. FOr some reason when I was doing that I keep coming up with an error saying the Pen Services is for a different model and I have to uninstall.

Is there anyway you could post your working Pen Services Pete?

Also I added some info and more pictures to the site.

I will put you down on the alternate list vagatizer.

As to the install of windows on the machine it is pretty much cake. Installing Windwos 95 via a 2.5-3.5 adapter and then setting it all up oin the 1200 take about 30 minutes. The drivers that are posted on the website work great for it.

As for battery life it is pretty decent 2-3 hours. Probably more but I am using a wireless ethernet card to get into my network so that is probably sucking up a fair amount of power. The battery is a litium-ion much nicer that Nickel metal hydride.

I would rather use windows 98 but for right now till I get everything working under win98 I will use Win95 as my play around system. I am using a dual boot on the unit. At some point I am going to put linux on it and see how that goes also.

oh and thinking of all the problems CF-01 owners are having, did you try streaming mp3s over your network? There should be enough horsepower from the P120 and the built in soundcard should help.

I have not tried streaming MP3's yet. I do not see it as being a problem but I will give a go sometime.

These machines seem pretty zippy for a P120. The lag on opening up programs is not huge at all.

Also one thing I like is that they are built rather well. You do nto feel like the thing is going to just crumble in your hands when holding it, and there is not any creaking from the case. Plus the harddrives are super quiet.

Thanks for testing. Good news, especially since The Media player is pretty CPU hungrey, even version 6, which I assume you're using.
What do you think of the screen resolution ? Good enough ?
I also saw a reference to driveS, with an S. Are there several in there ?!

That "yellow1" is so irritating. He arrived here on the boards just about 20 days ago, and now he's posting everywhere ten times daily. You can hardly make a comment without this narcissist feeling the need to horn in. You don't quite get the feeling that the guy needs to have the last word, though. Rather, it's like he's hungry for human interaction. Maybe he should change his handle to "lonely1."

As far as I'm concerned, you can keep that level of activity if you've got noting better than personal "comments/attacks" in store.
