Any interest in running the iBench "Web Experience" benchmark on our hacked appliances ?

As I was trying to figure out why my hacked Gateway CP was so slow, I ran into this nice "web experience" benchmark which seems well suited to the primary use of these hacked appliances.
Here's the main page:
http://i-bench.zdnet.com/ibench/i-bench.htm

As usual, there's a bunch of useless stuff as they try to get you to run as many tests as possible...This page takes you to the nitty gritty and lets you select the tests you want to run and shows you your latest scores:
http://i-bench.zdnet.com/ibench/testlist/home_js.php

I think we could limit ourselves to the "Load Pages" and possibly "Animation Tests".

Before running (or rerunning the tests), make sure you CLEAR your cache by going to (in IE) Tools\Internet Options and Delete Files in the "Temporary Internet Files" area.

Not trying to find out who's the best here, but just trying to get a sense of how various hacked machines relate to each other.
I'll put up the results of my GCT and Webplayer shortly.

OK, I slapped together a website to compile the results and provide general info/links on C.U.I.A's !
Find out what it's about over there:

Yellow1....I'm not sure how the results of these "Web" tests can be related to the overall performance of a hacked appliance. The test results are highly dependant on your individual connection speed, and the quality of that connection. I think a more accurate guage of performance would involve Sandra Benchmarking...cpu, memory, etc.

Other tests could be added, but you're going to be using your hacked appliancemainly for web surfing and mp3 streaming no ?
I'd like to find a mp3 benchmarking program. xAudio does it in DOS.
I'll add a connection speed question though, good point.

Oh and iBench is largely "connection speed" independant, since it loops cached pages to test the rendering performance, which is something most CUIAs struggle with !

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I don't see how this could be helpful. So-called "web benchmarking" is really influenced by the amount of traffic within a particular internet backbone, time of day, day of week, and the individual ISP's resource load. Oops, I forgot to list the vagaries of the individual customer's connection (modem quality, line quality, cable modem resource allocation, DSL line attenuation (distance from Bell node multiplied by line impedance), etc. The client access device type (i-opener, CF-01, etc.) is really the least consideration. Second, I personally don't care for the "CUIA" acronym (where did that come from, lol.) Nice looking web design, though, Keith!

Ok, fine, no big deal, thanks for the feedback.
I have found though that these appliances have a VERY hard time rendering web pages decently fast.
Again, iBench runs most of its tests using cached web pages, so your particular connection really doesn't matter much.
Right now, I'm struggling to get my Gateway Pad to surf at decent speeds. It really beats me because the tansmetta chip should be up to the task and I've ugraded the 32mg SODIM with a 128mb chip...
Hopefully someone will get better results than I do and I'l find out from postings on the website.
I'll post a first batch of results tonight.
cheers

I've given more thought to this. There may be a way this could be interesting and useful... If the SAME person conducts the tests within the same hour, on the same day, from the same location, we might be able to determine relative speed among internet appliances. So, for example, it will be interesting to see Yellow1's results comparing his GCT with Virgin Webplayer if he facilitates the testing one after the other. If someone else has an i-opener, a Webplayer, and an ePods unit, and can test those quickly in succession, it would be interesting to see those results, etc.

On the other hand, non-comparative testing -- Frank's i-opener on Saturday all by itself -- shouldn't be reported because that doesn't mean much at all. Also, don't mix results in order to effect a statistical mean -- "Webplayer overall average: 1 min., 38 secs." -- because some locations/times/backbones/ISPs will be faster than others, and since not everyone has every appliance, the results could be skewed if, by chance, a couple of really fast locations happened to have more Webplayers for example, etc.

Agreed about the overall. That's why the sorting is done on Load Html/Subsequent.
I've run the tests many times and get very similar results, whatever the time of the day.
Again. apart from the html/xml loading first iterations, numbers shouldn't change.
Gateway CP is up and I'll put the Webplayer later tonight or tomorrow.
Let's run these benches and send the forms !

Well thanks to these benchmarks, I came to the conclusion I had to try WinME and I'm happy to report that the performance is stunning compared to the GWCP running Win98.

er...well I don't think this type of project had been undertaken before, so in a sense it's news.
Sorry if it inconvenienced you.
