Makes me wonder if they'll send out a new update that kills this functionality. maybe it was good timing that the extractStream update came out after the v2 upgrade!
also- it would be nice to update programming information without having it "call home", ie. fool it into thinking it is calling home, but supply that information from a different process.
Not much tivo can do- I don't remember agreeing to anything about having to use their service!
Article on Salon says next version will use strong encryption to protect the video files. This seems so ridiculous. By end of year, you'll be able to buy DVD recorders and bring the video wherever you want.
Since it's basically a glorified Linux box, someone will figure out the hardware enough to write their own version of a PVR function, eliminating the need to use TIVO software and/or their updates anyway. The base functionality of capturing the video stream and encoding it into MPEG is implicit, it just comes down to twidling the appropriate bits.
